All data are uniformly and automatically processed in a data processing system. An input record is transformed into a record having a uniform format. All file formats are unified. A desired record is read out from a file and transformed into an arbitrary format. Data input processing, a file update processing, and data output processing are designed to process data independently, uniformly, and automatically. A process content to be performed by each of the data input, file update, and data output processings is designated by a simple data item such as a record keyword and a data word.

A data processing apparatus comprises input, file update, display and print processing units which are independently operated and linked to each other. Arbitrary word labels can independently be set in each processing unit. Each processing unit performs only an operation defined by the word labels. The data processed by one processing unit can be used as a source data based on which the succeeding linked processing unit performs another processing operation.

A table memory is provided for selecting types of files to be updated in accordance with identification codes designating types of transactions. When a transaction occurs, the corresponding transaction record and the identification code indicating the type of transaction are generated. An electronic musical instrument employs a novel technique to produce a musical sound. A major part of a musical sound producing section of the electronic musical instrument is constructed by digital circuitry which is well adapted for an LSI fabrication. The position of the pointer is electronically detected and is applied as alarm time data to a time counting circuit. A data-recording device wherein a plurality of tracks are concentrically provided on the recording surface of a rotatable magnetic recording medium. A plurality of sector-starting positions are arranged on the respective tracks at a given circumferential interval to detect the extent to which the magnetic recording medium has been rotated, and one sector-starting position among the sector-starting positions of the respective tracks is used as a point at which the writing or reading of data is to be commenced. A circumferential angular interval between a sector-starting position provided on a given track to be used as a data write-read starting point and a similar sector-starting position provided on a track adjacent to said given track to be used as a data write-read starting point is so defined as to give a magnetic head a sufficient length of time to be shifted from said given track to the adjacent track in the time of rotating of a magnetic recording medium being rotated through the above-mentioned circumferential angular interval.
