A diagnostic system in which the accuracy of the diagnosis of the deterioration state of a catalyst in a catalytic converter for cleaning the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is enhanced without incurring a rise in cost. The temperature of the catalyst is estimated using the operating-state signal (for example, the flow rate of intake air or the width of a fuel injection pulse) of the engine by a diagnostic device. The conversion efficiency of the catalyst calculated from the outputs of oxygen sensors is corrected using the estimated temperature by the diagnostic device. The deterioration state of the catalyst is diagnosed on the basis of the corrected temperature by the diagnostic device.

System for diagnosing deterioration of catalyst

A diagnostic equipment for an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus installed for an engine, comprising a misfire detector which detects the misfire of the engine, and a secondary-air-system failure detector which detects the failure of a secondary air system. An index corrector corrects a deterioration index calculated by a deterioration-index calculator, in accordance with the detected result of the detector. A deterioration decision unit decides if the diagnostic equipment has failed, by the use of the corrected deterioration index. In a case where the extent of the misfire or the like is severe, a decision interrupter interrupts the decision of the deterioration decision unit. Thus, even when the misfire of the engine or the failure of the secondary air system has occurred, the detection of the deterioration of a catalyst does not err. It is therefore avoided to erroneously replace the catalyst which has not deteriorated yet, or to run the engine in spite of the deterioration of the catalyst.

Diagnostic equipment for an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus

In the fuel cylinder injection engine with the supercharging machine, the ignitability deteriorates because the density of the fuel at the spray center becomes excessive due to the shrinkage of the fuel spray under the supercharging. As a result, the density of the smoke and the hydrocarbon exhaust rate increase. The mixture of the fuel and the air under the supercharging is promoted by the control by TCV installed in the suction port which is a divided spray and air flow generation mechanism and the valve timing control of the suction and exhaust valve, etc.

This invention of the above configuration can provide a simple and inexpensive direct cylinder injection type internal combustion engine which reduces abrasion of electrodes and consumption of electric power while assuring stable fuel combustions even when ignition timing is retarded.

A combustion state is diagnoses by extracting specific rotation period component of a period synchronous with rotation from a combustion state parameter for at least two rotations. The combustion state is judged on the basis of the extracted specific rotation period component. The combustion state parameter may be the engine speed or the output torque of a multiple-cylinder engine which varies according to the combustion state of the engine.

Method and apparatus for diagnosing engine exhaust gas purification system

An air-fuel ratio correction coefficient calculating component is provided to an air-fuel ratio controller for an engine having the wide range air-fuel ratio sensor. In order to compensate for a time lag in detection of an air-fuel ratio detected by the wide range air-fuel ratio sensor from the time when a mixed gas of the air-fuel ratio is supplied to the engine, the air-fuel ratio controller includes a component for calculating an air-fuel ratio correction coefficient to control an amount of fuel supplied to the engine based on an output signal of the air-fuel ratio sensor. The air-fuel ratio correction coefficient calculating component calculates the air-fuel ratio correction coefficient based on a nonlinear calculation element. The non-linear calculation element has an ON-OFF characteristic, a neutral zone characteristic, a saturation characteristic or a characteristic combining a plurality of characteristics selected from the above-mentioned characteristics.

The invention provide a control system for a direct fuel injection engine employing a valve varying mechanism, which can suppress mixing of burned gas and fresh air to maintain the combustion stability, can accelerate vaporization of sprayed fuel at the beginning of fuel injection to reduce the emission rate of HC, and can realize a reduction of NOx based on the effect of exhaust return. The control system for the direct fuel injection engine comprises a fuel injector. for directly injecting fuel into a combustion chamber, and valve varying drivers for variably controlling the opening/closing timing of each of an intake valve and/or an exhaust valve. A control unit controls the valve varying mechanism unit to introduce burned gas from an exhaust port into the combustion chamber and to inject the fuel during a compression stroke for effectuating stratified charge combustion. The control unit controls the valve varying drivers to provide a phase difference in the opening timing of two left and right valves constituting the intake valve and/or the exhaust valve, thereby generating a flow of the burned gas along a cylinder wall.

A diagnosing system for an engine diagnoses malfunctions that occur in a direct-injection engine in which fuel is injected into combustion chambers or a lean-burn engine. The present invention provides a diagnosing system for an engine capable of diagnosing malfunctions in an intake air flow intensifying component and a fuel supply component and of specifying a malfunctioning part without being affected by the difference between different engines, the difference in quality between parts and aging. The diagnosing system for an engine comprises: a selecting component for selecting either a first air-fuel mixture control component or a second air-fuel mixture control component according to operating condition of an engine; a combustion condition detecting component for detecting combustion condition of the engine; and decision component for deciding a malfunction on the basis of a first combustion condition detected by the combustion condition detecting component in a state where the first air-fuel mixture control component is selected by the selecting component, and a second combustion condition detected by the combustion condition detecting component in a state where the second air-fuel mixture control component is selected by the selecting component.
