A display apparatus comprising a plurality of pixel portions arranged in a matrix, a signal driver circuit which generates apply voltages corresponding to display data, and applies the apply voltages to the pixel portions, a scan driver circuit which applies a selecting voltage to selected ones of the pixel portions, and a level shifter circuit which converts a voltage level of the display data into a drive voltage level of the signal driver circuit, thereby producing level-shifted display data. The signal driver circuit generates the apply voltages based on the level-shifted display data.

This specification discloses a novel multi-tone display matrix display device. The matrix display device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a matrix display panel having a matrix composed of plural X direction signal lines and plural Y direction signal lines lying at right angles thereto, intersecting points on the matrix being pixels of an image to be displayed, an X direction driving section for sequentially scanning the X direction signal lines to provide image signals, a Y direction driving section for driving the Y direction signal lines in synchronism with the scanning of the X direction signal lines to sequentially provide select signals to the Y direction signal lines, an A-D converter section for receiving an analog signal and converting it into a digital signal, a voltage generating section for generating signals at plural voltage levels, and a selector section for selecting an output signal from the voltage generating section in accordance with the output from A-D converter section and providing it to the X direction driving section as an image signal.

A liquid crystal halftone display system including a tone generator which, for pixels having P tones of K tones (1&lE;P&lE;K), alternately outputs first N-bit tone display data and second N-bit tone display data in successive frames at one of a first phase and a second phase. A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display panel, a data processing circuit, a signal driver circuit, a scan driver circuit, and a power circuit. The liquid crystal display panel includes a plurality of pixels constituted by at least a plurality of pixel electrodes disposed in a matrix arrangement, a reference electrode opposing the pixel electrodes, and a liquid crystal disposed between the pixel electrodes and the reference electrode. The data processing circuit receives input display data and an input synchronizing signal, converts the input display data and the input synchronizing signal to output display data and an output synchronizing signal which are compatible with the signal driver circuit, generates an alternating signal as a timing signal for periodically inverting a polarity of a liquid crystal apply voltage applied to the liquid crystal by the signal driver circuit via the pixel electrodes, and outputs the output display data, the output synchronizing signal, and the alternating signal. A logical voltage level of the output display data output from the data processing circuit is different from a logical voltage level of the input display data received by the data processing circuit.

A liquid-crystal display system comprising a voltage divider circuit, and a gate circuit. The voltage divider circuit divides n voltages of n different voltage levels supplied from a power source for liquid-crystal displays, into m voltages of m different voltage levels (n&lt;m), n and m are integers large than 1 corresponding to display data. A control signal commands the gate circuit to deliver a first voltage during the first period of one horizontal scanning cycle, and to deliver a second voltage during the second period thereof subsequent to the first period. In response to the control signal, the gate circuit corrects a signal corresponding to the display data and delivers the corrected signal during the first period so as to select a circuit which has a time constant not exceeding that of a circuit for delivering a voltage corresponding to the display data, from among circuits for supplying the m divisional voltages, and it delivers the signal left intact, during the second period. The voltage divider circuit is supplied with the output signal of the gate circuit, and it selects and delivers the voltage. Thus, the selected voltage is delivered directly without a buffer, and the liquid-crystal panel of the display system can be quickly driven.
