In the first aspect of the present invention, there is disclosed a method for producing a copolymer of an alkyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride which comprises removing an organic solvent used in a reaction under a temperature so that a slurry state can be maintained. According to the first aspect, such a copolymer of the alkyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride which contains a little amount of the solvent remaining therein as disclosed in the second aspect of the present invention, can be obtained. Further, it can be avoided that a specific viscosity of the copolymer of the alkyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride is lowered, by means of a method for producing a copolymer of alkyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride which comprises shielding oxygen in a polymerization, as disclosed in the third aspect of the present invention.

The invention provides polyester dials suitable for preparation of polyurethanes, and provides polyurethanes derived therefrom. The invention also provides spandex filaments prepared from these polyurethanes, which exhibit improved elasticity, tensile strength, and resistance to hydrolysis. The present invention also provides dialkyl amino group-containing polyol additives having a high solubility in dimethylacetamide solvent, which when incorporated into a polyurethane protect the polyurethane and derived spandex filaments from deterioration or discoloration, and confer an improved modulus of elasticity. The polyurethanes and spandex filaments of the invention provide fabrics having a soft feeling, excellent hydrolysis resistance, wrinkle resistance, and adhesive properties, and which are particularly suitable for preparation of an artificial leather.

A polyurethane resin obtained from a diisocyanate compound and a polyester polyol. The polyester polyol may (1) comprise not less than 50% by weight of a polyester glycol having a molecular weight of 500-5,000, the polyester glycol being obtained by reacting an acid and 3,3,5-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol and have a molecular weight of 500-5,000, (2) have a number average molecular weight of 500-5,000 and an alcohol hydroxyl group at terminals thereof and comprise not less than 50% by weight of ester units, the ester units being derived from a dicarboxylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol and/or 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-hexanediol, or (3) have a number-average molecular weight of 500-5,000 and comprise not less than 50% by weight of ester units of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and trimethyl-1,6-hexanediols. The above polyurethane resins may be combined with chlorinated polyolefin and then used in binder compositions or, alternately used in coating compositions for decoration paper made of a polyolefin resin. The above polyurethane resins may also be laminated on at least one surface of a woven cloth made of synthetic resin to form a laminated clothing that may further be used in an air bag for a vehicle.

Novel polyester compounds having a benzotriazole group of the invention are obtained by a ring-opening addition-polymerisation of lactones with the alcoholic hydroxyl group of 3-(5-chloro-2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-5-(1,1-dimethyl-ethyl)-4-hydroxy-benzene -propanol, 3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxy-benzene-ethanol, 3-(5-methyl-2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-5-(1-methyl-ethyl)-4-hydroxy-benzene-pro panolbis[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxy-benzene-ethanol]methane or the like. These compounds are used as ultraviolet-rays absorbents for thermoplastic resins. The resulting resin composition has an excellent light resistance and chemical resistance.
