A camera capable of operating in a red-eye prevention mode. The camera has an electronic flash device which is activated by a drive circuit in synchronization with the exposure. The electronic flash device also serve as a pre-light-emission device capable of performing pre-light-emission for the purpose of preventing red-eye effect. When it is judged from the photographing condition is judged that red-eye effect may occur, a controller activates the electronic flash device to effect a pre-light-emission for reducing the size of pupils of eyes of a person to be photographed, before the main flashing which is executed in synchronization with the exposure.

A custom mode control apparatus by which the user can arbitrarily set the custom mode comprises a first selection device for selecting the custom mode or the ordinary mode, a second selection device for selecting the setting or reproduction of the custom mode, a contents setting device for selecting the set contents indicated on an indicating portion when the setting of the custom mode is selected by the second selection device, thereby arbitrarily setting the contents of the custom mode, a memory device for memorizing the contents of the custom mode set by the contents setting device, and a reproducing device for bringing about a custom mode in which the contents of the custom mode memorized in the memory device are reproduced when the reproduction of the custom mode is selected by the second selection device.

A camera comprises a housing provided therein with a film chamber and an aperture for exposure which opens in the film chamber, the housing being equipped with a cover member for opening or closing the film chamber, focal plane shutter means provided with a light-shielding blade member for closing the aperture for exposure, wherein the blade member can be retracted from the aperture for exposure to expose a photographic film loaded in the film chamber to light, means for detecting that the cover means has opened the film chamber, and control means for retracting the blade member from the aperture for exposure in response to an output from the detecting means.
