An object of the present invention is to provide a recording material or a recording sheet that is excellent in background and image stabilities and further excellent in color-developing sensitivity. The recording material of the present invention contains a color-forming compound, an additive, and at least one compound represented by formula (I) [wherein Rand Reach independently represent a C-Calkyl group or the like; p represents 0 or any integer of 1 to 4; q represents 0 or any integer of 1 to 5; when p and q represents 2 or more, each of Rand each of Rare the same or different; Rand Reach independently represent a hydrogen atom or the like; Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or the like; and the bond represented by the wavy line represents E, Z, or a mixture thereof].

Recording material using phenolic compound

Provided is a recording material with a superior storage property for the background and image, particularly with a remarkable superiority in any of light resistance of the background, and light, moisture and heat resistance of the image. The recording material contains a phenolic compound represented by formula (I) [wherein R-Reach independently represent a hydrogen atom or C-Calkyl group; Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, C-Calkyl group or C-Calkoxy group, with the proviso that when Ris a hydrogen atom, Ris a C-Calkyl group, when Ris a C-Calkyl group, Ris a hydrogen atom, and when Ris a C-Calkoxy group, Ris a C-Calkoxy group].

An object of the present invention is to provide a recording material that is excellent in color-developing properties and background and image stabilities, and a compound used therein. Provided is a color-developing composition for recording materials having a superior heat resistance. The color-developing composition is a reaction composition containing a mixture of compounds represented by formula (III) obtained by reacting a dihydroxydiphenylsulfone derivative represented by formula (I) with a dihalide represented by formula (II) X&#x2014;Y&#x2014;X (II), wherein, in a composition where the content of a compound with n=1 in said reaction composition is from 5 to 80% by mass of the total solid content of the composition, at least 10% by mass of the compound with n=1 is a crystalline material.
