An apparatus for driving devices which are operated by, or 'supplementary' to, a V-type internal combustion engine, having a crankshaft and overhead camshafts, includes a camshaft drive mechanism for rotatably connecting the camshafts to the crankshaft so that the camshafts are 'timely' driven. A supplementary device drive mechanism rotatably connects supplementary devices independently of the overhead camshafts to the crankshaft. The crankshaft is provided with a transmission gear train for transmitting rotation of the camshafts to the camshaft drive mechanism and the supplementary device drive mechanism.

Apparatus for driving various devices by internal combustion engine

In a V-type engine with two bore-offset banks opposed to one another at a predetermined angle, an accessory mechanism is provided between the two banks. A drive belt for the accessory mechanism is disposed on the side of one of the banks which is recessed inwardly due to the bore offset. In another embodiment, the accessory mechanism is a supercharger driven by a balancing shaft which, in turn, is driven by the crank shaft. In yet another embodiment, the V-type engine has a separate timing belt for each bank, that is, a first timing belt for the bank which is recessed inward because of the bore offset, and a second timing belt for the bank which juts out because of the bore offset. A drive belt is provided for driving the supercharger. The belts are arranged in the following order from the inside outward: the second timing belt, the first timing belt and the accessory belt.

Accessory drive device for an internal combustion engine

An intake manifold for a multi cylinder internal combustion engine has a common upstream passage and individual downstream passages, leading individually to cylinders of the engine, respectively. These individual downstream passages are connected between a downstream end of the common upstream passage and the cylinders. Upstream end portions of the individual downstream passages are symmetrically located around a fuel injector, disposed downstream relative to the common upstream passage, and are joined together. At a center of the symmetrically joined upstream end portions of the individual downstream passages, fuel passages are provided to open independently into the upstream end portions so as to introduce fuel from the fuel injector into the individual downstream passages.

Intake manifold of intake system for multi-cylinder internal combustion

Discrete intake passages communicating with respective cylinders of a multiple-cylinder in-line engine are merged into an integrated chamber at their upstream ends. The integrated chamber is disposed above the engine and extends substantially horizontally. Each discrete intake passage extends from the engine body, bends upward toward the integrated chamber and is connected to the downstream side end face of the integrated chamber. The discrete intake passages for the cylinders which are positioned relatively near to the integrated chamber are connected to the downstream side end face of the integrated chamber at an upper portion of the end face and the discrete intake passages for the cylinders which are positioned relatively far from the integrated chamber are connected to the downstream side end face of the integrated chamber at a lower portion of the end face.

Intake system for engine

An intake system is incorporated in a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders. The intake system includes an intake manifold having a plurality of discrete intake passages connected to the plurality of cylinders, respectively, and two intake pipes, each intake pipe being arranged in such a way as to descend substantially vertically downwardly from a communicating portion where the intake pipe communicates with each of two groups of the intake passages, turns to extend horizontally in one longitudinal direction of the engine body and then turns back to extend in the opposite longitudinal direction of the engine body surrounding the discrete intake passages. The two groups of the discrete intake passages are connected to two groups of the cylinders which in each and the same group are not intended to be fired one after another.

Intake system for multi-cylinder engine

An air intake device of an engine has intake pipes connected to each of the engine cylinders divided into first and second groups to prevent the continuance of the intake strokes of adjacent cylinders. A first connecting cavity connected to the first group of cylinders and a second connecting cavity connected to the second group of cylinders are arranged in parallel with each other, for effecting supercharging by utilizing the dynamic effect of intake air into each cylinder. A first communicating passage is connected at one end to a longitudinal end of the first connecting cavity and at the other end to a longitudinal end of the second connecting cavity. A second communicating passage arranged on the same side as the first communicating passage is connected at one end to a side of the first connecting cavity and at the other end to a side of the second collecting cavity. The effective passage length of the first communicating passage is shorter than that of the second communicating passage.

Air intake device of engine

A V-type internal combustion engine having cam shafts respectively provided in first spaces defined between cylinder heads and head covers of a pair of upwardly diverging cylinder banks and a breather arrangement which includes a pressure buffer chamber provided between the cylinder banks of a cylinder block and having side walls constituted by cylinder block walls of said cylinder banks so as to be closed at its upper portion and communicated with an interior of a crankcase, and a communicating passage for communicating said pressure buffer chamber with an intake passage at a downstream of a throttle valve, and a baffle plate provided in said pressure buffer chamber to confront the open end of said communicating passage.

Breather arrangement for internal combustion engine

Cylinder head construction defining a hemispheric combustion chamber which includes a guide wall provided to impart swirl to the incoming air-fuel mixture. The guide wall facing the intake port defined by the cylinder head construction and generally parallel to the line of action of an intake valve provided in the intake port has a height greater than the maximum lift of the intake valve, and decreases in width in the direction of opening of the intake valve. In addition, the size of the area and the position of the guide wall relative to the intake port and the intake valve are maintained in specific ranges, and thus the construction not only permits efficient ignition of a lean air-fuel mixture, but at the same time causes only a slight drop in engine performance.

Cylinder head construction

Cylinder head construction defining a hemispheric combustion chamber and including a guide wall facing an intake port to impart swirl to an incoming air-fuel mixture and permit use of a lean air-fuel mixture. The position of the guide wall relative to the cylinder center and relative disposition of the guide wall and a spark plug are made such that although the guide wall is effective in imparting swirl, a flame front may be efficiently propagated to all parts of the combustion chamber subsequent to ignition of the air-fuel mixture therein, whereby provision of the guide wall does not result in increased emission of hydrocarbon compounds in exhaust gas or formation of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.

Internal combustion engine having a primary and a secondary intake passage for each cylinder, the passages opening to the combustion chamber through a common intake port having an intake valve. A substantially radially extending partition plate is disposed at the intake port so as to separate the two passages one from the other when the intake valve is closed.

Intake system for internal combustion engines

Four cycle internal combustion engine including an intake passage leading to an intake port formed in the cylinder head. The intake passage comprises a first passage section connected to the intake port with an inclination so that intake air-fuel mixture is introduced into the engine working chamber with a circumferential velocity component to produce a swirl in the working chamber. The intake passage further includes a second and third sections which together with the first section form a meandering substantially S-shaped passage to establish a stratified fuel distribution in the passage.
