With vertical movement of a valve in an engine, a suspending member which suspends from a retainer engaged in the valve goes up and down with respect to a standing member on a cylinder head. A projection provided on the suspending member slides on inclined guide surfaces of the standing member, thereby attaining relative rotation of the suspending member forcibly with respect to the standing member, so that the valve is rotated on its axis.

Valve rotator

A poppet valve comprises a valve stem and a valve head which is provided at one end of the valve stem. A plurality of arcuate fins are provided on the surface of the valve head. Two semicylindrical cotters are pushed by a press member, so that the valve is driven and reciprocated. When the valve is moved upward or downward to open a port of a valve casing in which the valve is contained, fluid flows, thereby allowing fluid pressure to act on the fins, so that valve rotates little by little around its axis owing to a slight gap between the cotters and the valve stem.

Poppet valve device

A hydraulic tappet comprises a body which comprises an outer tube, an inner tube and an upper portion which connects the two tubes at the upper end. Within the inner tube, there are provided inner and outer plungers. The outer plunger abuts a valve stem of an engine valve in a DOHC-type engine. The outer plunger is supported by a reinforcement member directly or via the inner plunger to provide high rigidity.

Hydraulic tappet for an internal combustion engine

The present invention relates to a method of partititioning the internal space of a thin-walled cylindrical member by securing a thin-walled partition member in place within the cylindrical member by means of calking. The method of the invention comprises the steps of: inserting a circular partition member into the hollow cylindrical member, the partititon member having a circular plate portion and a rim portion axially extending from one side of the periphery of the circular plate portion, the hollow cylindrical member being formed therein with a space portion of larger diameter and a space portion of smaller diameter, the portion of larger diameter being formed at its end adjacent to the portion of smaller diameter with an annular groove; placing the partitition member on a shoulder face formed between the two space portions so that the circular plate portion comes in contact with the shoulder face; and applying an axial force to the end face of the rim portion of the partition member to cause the rim portion to deform so that a portion of the rim portion penetrates into the annular groove, the partition member being thereby tightly secured by means of calking to the annular groove and consequently to the hollow cylindrical member. Accordingly, the rim portion of the partition member can be tightly secured in place within the cylindrical member without applying a substantial radial force to the wall of the cylindrical member and, accordingly, the cylindrical member, particularly the outer surface thereof, will be subject to little deformation during the securing process of the partition member. Therefore, in case that the cylindrical member serves as a piston which has to be slidably mounted in the bore of a guide member, it becomes unnecessary, unlike the case of the conventional method, to finish the outer surface of the piston by grinding after the securing process of the partition member. In addition, since the deformed rim portion remains generally cylindrical and consequently enhances the overall rigidity of the partition member itself, the partition member may be formed from a thin plate.

Method of partitioning the internal space of a hollow cylindrical member

The present invention relates to a hydraulic valve lash adjuster with which a cam engages directly and in which an oil-introducing chamber can be easily cleaned by a fluid or gas jet stream. In the valve lash adjuster in accordance with the present invention, the cylinder sleeve is formed through its lateral wall with a plurality of openings, and an annular oil-introducing chamber defined between the body and cylinder sleeve is communicated through the openings with the reservoir and consequently with the high pressure chamber. With the above construction of the invention, an extraneous substance such as chips and particles can be removed from the oil-introducing chamber along a fluid jet stream. Thus, since the oil-introducing chamber can be easily and perfectly cleaned by a jet stream during the manufacturing process and moreover during any overhaul work thereafter, reliability and maintainability of the product is markedly improved.

Hydraulic valve lash adjuster

The present invention relates to a hydraulic valve lash adjuster which is capable of storing a large quantity of oil therein and exhibits high resistance to wear. In the valve lash adjuster in accordance with the invention, the plunger comprises an upper plunger portion and a lower plunger portion, and the upper and lower plunger portions are welded together with the partition member so that the partition member is sealingly fixed within the plunger. Accordingly, the upper and lower plunger portions are welded together, and simultaneously the partition member is sealingly fixed within the plunger. The plunger thus formed is surface hardened by quenching or carburizing. With the above construction of the invention, therefore, the hardness of the outer surface of the plunger is not impaired and the residual stresses generated by welding do not degrade the resistance to wear and fatigue.

The present invention relates to a hydraulic valve lash adjuster which is capable of storing a large quantity of oil therein and exhibits high resistance to wear. In the valve lash adjuster in accordance with the invention, the plunger comprises an upper plunger portion and a lower plunger portion, at least a portion of a partition member extends over the joint between the upper and lower plunger portions, and the upper plunger portion being welded to the lower plunger portion by projection welding so that the partition member is deformed inward by bulging of the welded portion to fix the partition member within the plunger. Accordingly, the upper and lower plunger portions are welded together by projection welding, and simultaneously the partition member is sealingly fixed within the plunger. The plunger thus formed is surface hardened by quenching or carburizing. With the above construction of the invention, therefore, the hardness of the outer surface of the plunger is not impaired and the residual stresses generated by welding do not degrade the resistance to wear and fatigue.
