A head-mounted device to be worn on a user's head includes a first pressing member to press, for example, an occipital region, a second pressing member to press, for example, a parietal region, and first and second linear members connected to the first and second pressing members respectively. The first and second linear members are guided so that a change in lengths of the first and second linear members causes the first and second pressing members to move in the first and second directions respectively. An adjustment unit to adjust the lengths of the first and second linear members includes first and second wind-up units connected to a rotational operation member and to wind up the first and second linear members respectively.

A head-mountable apparatus mountable on a head of an observer comprises a first pressing member which presses a first portion of the head; a second pressing member which presses a second portion of the head; and an adjustment unit adapted to move the first pressing member and the second pressing member to positions where the first pressing member and the second pressing member respectively press the first portion and the second portion.

An image display apparatus includes a light source for emitting illumination light, an image display element for displaying an image by reflecting incident light, an illumination optical element which reflects the illumination light from the light source toward the image display element and through which image light from the image display element is transmitted, an observation optical element for guiding the image light transmitted through the illumination optical element to an eye of an observer, and a light-shielding member for blocking at least one of unnecessary light which is contained in the illumination light from the light source and travels outside an effective image display area of the image display element and unnecessary light which is contained in the image light from the image display element and travels outside an effective observation space.

An image display apparatus includes a display element for displaying a video image, a backlight source for illuminating the display element, and a sculptured surface prism for guiding light from the display element. The sculptured surface prism enlarges the video image on the display element and presents the video image to an observer. The display element and the sculptured surface prism are supported by a holding member. An electrical circuit board is provided to drive the display element. The electrical circuit board and the display element are electrically connected. An image reading apparatus includes an image sensor for sensing an image from an original, a conveyor for conveying the original, a first board on which an image processing circuit for performing predetermined processing for an image signal output from the image sensor is mounted, and a second board on which a power supply circuit for supplying power to the image processing circuit is mounted. The first and second boards are arranged to be parallel to each other, and the conveyor means conveys the original to cause the original to pass through a space enclosed with the first board and the second board. An inlet is formed in a lower part of a space enclosed with the first board and the second board, and an outlet is formed in an upper part of the space. The conveyor conveys the original while keeping the original parallel to the first or second board. The original is translucent.
