A solid fuel burner using a low oxygen concentration gas as a transporting gas of a low grade solid fuel such as brown coal or the like and a combustion method using the solid fuel burner are provided. The solid fuel burner comprises a means for accelerating ignition of the fuel and a means for preventing slugging caused by combustion ash from occurring. Mixing of fuel and air inside a fuel nozzleis accelerated by that an additional air nozzleand a separatorfor separating a flow passage are arranged in the fuel nozzle, and the exit of the additional air nozzleis set at a position so as to overlap with the separatorwhen seeing from a direction perpendicular to a burner axis, and additional air is ejected in a direction nearly perpendicular to a flow direction of a fuel jet flowing through the fuel nozzle. An amount of air from the additional air nozzleis varied corresponding to a combustion load. By increasing the amount of air from the additional air nozzleat a low load operation, an oxygen concentration of a circulation flowformed in a downstream portion outside the exit of the fuel nozzleis increased to stably burn the fuel. By decreasing the amount of air from the additional air nozzleat a high load operation, a flame is formed at a position distant from the fuel nozzleto suppress radiant heat received by structures of the solid fuel burner and walls of the furnace.

A fuel supply duct, which supplies a mixed fluid of a solid fuel and carrier gas to one or more burners provided on the walls of a furnace, is provided with a branching part, and each of a plurality of branch ducts, which branch out from the branching part, is connected to a corresponding burner. Also a damper, with which the tilt angle with respect to the direction of flow of the mixed fluid can be changed, is positioned in the fuel supply duct at the upstream side of the branching part so that a mutual difference will arise in the solid fuel concentrations of the mixed fluid supplied to the respective branch ducts. A fuel distributor for fuel supply duct is thus arranged. The tilt angle of the above-mentioned damper is adjusted to increase the concentration of solid fuel in the mixed fluid supplied to a specific burner. At a burner to which the high solid fuel concentration is supplied, stability of ignition and stable combustion of the ignited flame can be obtained during low load operation.

Boiler

A boiler has a combustion chamber formed by front and rear walls and a side wall extending between the front and rear walls. Plural stages of burners are placed on at least one of the front and rear walls. In the front and rear walls are opposing gas jets for making a pressure of the gas near the side wall within the combustion chamber higher than the pressure of the gas at a center portion of the combustion chamber. The gas jet ports are disposed at a height within a range of the height of the burner stages. The burner stages supply the pulverized coal, the air for transferring the pulverized coal and the air for burning. A part of the air for transferring the pulverized coal or the air for burning is supplied in a branched manner to the gas jet port and injected into the combustion chamber. Further, the air is preferably injected from the gas jet ports in a direct gas flow, not a swirling flow.

A pulverized coal burner includes a pulverized coal nozzle for jetting a mixture of pulverized coal and primary air, a secondary air nozzle and a tertiary air nozzle, concentrically arranged around the outer periphery of the pulverized coal nozzle, and a tube expanded portion at the end of a partition wall separating two adjacent air nozzles. A flow shift means such as a guide plate for shifting the secondary air in the secondary air nozzle so as to flow along the tube expanded portion is provided. The secondary air is jetted outwardly by the guide plate, and mixing of the secondary air and the tertiary air with pulverized coals is delayed, whereby an amount of NOx is decreased.

To provide a pulverized coal burner capable of reducing the NOx concentration at the time of a low load, a pulverized coal burner includes a secondary air nozzle and a tertiary air nozzle concentrically positioned about the outer periphery of a fuel nozzle carrying a pulverized coal with a primary air, and two swirling flow generators are included at least one of these nozzles with a positional relation parallel to a flow of air. One of the swirling flow of the two swirling flow generators can be set strongly. And, under a condition of low air flow rate, air can be supplied from one swirling flow generator alone. Since the swirling strength of the combustion air can be increased, the concentration of NOx produced by the combustion of the pulverized coal can be reduced. Also, because the swirling strength at the time of low load can be increased, the NOx concentration can be reduced by keeping the pulverized coal flame stable.

The present invention relates to a pulverized coal ignition burner apparatus for use with a pulverized coal boiler or the like for a thermal power plant. The apparatus is so constructed that the pulverized coal is directly burned without generation of a large amount of NOx and without using auxiliary fuel such as light oil, heavy oil and gas that are needed in the conventional apparatus.
