In one embodiment of the present invention, a driving method of a liquid crystal display device is disclosed. According to one embodiment of the present invention a driving method of an active matrix display device is disclosed including: a plurality of source lines; a plurality of gate lines that intersect the source lines; and a plurality of pixel formation sections being disposed in a matrix manner at the respective intersections of the source lines and the gate lines, each of the pixel formation sections receiving as a pixel value a voltage applied to the source line that passes through the corresponding intersection when the gate line that passes through the corresponding intersection is selected, wherein non-image signals are applied to the source lines in each horizontal scanning period, and the gate lines are selected in an effective scanning period, and thereafter the gate lines are selected, in sync with a timing of application of the non-image signals to the source lines, before the subsequent effective scanning period comes after a point in time when the gate lines have been brought into non-selected state.

In one embodiment, a display panel driving apparatus which generates, based on an input gray scale, a gray scale of a first sub-frame and a gray scale of a second sub-frame so as to display the input gray scale as a result of a summation of respective display corresponding to the first sub-frame and the second sub-frame into which one frame is divided, and the gray scale of the second sub-frame being greater than the gray scale of the first sub-frame, for a response in which the input gray scale of a subsequent frame is greater than an input gray scale of a previous frame and the input gray scale of the subsequent frame is not less than a first threshold gray scale, a gray scale of the first sub-frame in the subsequent frame is set not more than a second threshold gray scale, regardless of input gray scale of the subsequent frame. Thus, it is possible to reduce jaggy in an edge of a moving image in time-division driving.

A modulation processing section compares video data of a current frame and a previous frame representative value supplied from a frame memory, corrects the video data so that a gradation transition from a gradation indicated by the previous frame representative value to a gradation indicated by the video data is emphasized, and outputs the corrected video data. A judgment section compares both of the data and judges, out of a value calculated from the previous frame representative value by a representative value generating section and the video data, which is to be stored in the frame memory till a next frame begins. This allows for realizing a liquid crystal display device capable of preventing with a relatively small-scale circuit (alternatively, a relatively small amount of calculation) a phenomenon such that: although a response speed of a pixel is improved, the emphasis modulation and a response delay of the pixel are combined so that image quality in displaying moving images deteriorates.

The liquid crystal display device of the invention includes: a liquid crystal layer taking on a roughly vertically aligned state in the black display state: first and second polarizing plates placed to face each other so that the transmission axes are orthogonal to each other; at least one first phase plate placed between the liquid crystal layer and the first polarizing plate and/or the second polarizing plate; at least one second phase plate placed between the first phase plate and the first or second polarizing plate whichever is farther from the first phase plate; and an illuminator for illuminating the liquid crystal layer with light via the first or second polarizing plate. The first phase plate has biaxial optical anisotropy and has functions of compensating part of thickness-direction retardation of the liquid crystal layer in the black display state and suppressing light leakage caused by deviation of the transmission axes of the first and second polarizing plates from the mutual orthogonal relationship in a tilted viewing angle direction. The second phase plate has negative uniaxial optical anisotropy and has a function of compensating the thickness-direction retardation of the liquid crystal layer in the black display state in cooperation with the first phase plate.
