A Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), a backlight used for the LCD and a method for producing the LCD and the backlight are provided which are capable of inhibiting an increase in component counts and in assembling processes and of reducing them, thereby achieving low costs. A display image is obtained by arranging a backlight section being able to perform scanning as a single unit in a manner that it positionally matches a liquid crystal displaying section. The backlight section is provided with a plurality of scanning electrodes and light emitting layers each providing a different luminescent color, and being spatially separated from each other on a principal face of the backlight and scanning is performed on a plurality of light emitting layers providing a different luminescent color.

A plasma display panel includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and discharge gas filled in a space defined between the first and second substrates, the first substrate including at least one first electrode extending in a first direction, and at least one second electrode extending in parallel with the first electrode, the second substrate including at least one third electrode extending in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, and a plurality of partition walls extending in the second direction for partitioning a display area, wherein at least one of the first and second electrodes is comprised of a first portion being in the form of a line extending in the first direction, and defining a discharge gap between itself and an adjacent electrode, and a second portion radially extending from the first portion in a direction away from the discharge gap.

A method for forming a dielectric film in a PDP includes the steps of: reducing the ambient pressure of an insulating film including a dielectric material before the ambient temperature reaches the reaction temperature of the dielectric material; introducing heated gas to increase the ambient pressure up to the atmospheric pressure while maintaining the ambient temperature at the reaction temperature; and lowering the ambient temperature down to the solidifying temperature of the insulating film while maintaining the atmospheric ambient pressure.

A plasma display panel having a plurality of surface discharge electrode pairs formed in a column direction at predetermined intervals, each surface discharge electrode pair having a pair of sustaining electrodes extending in a row direction so that a discharge gap is put between the sustaining electrodes. Each sustaining electrode is made up of a transparent conductive thin film, is provided with a main electrode portion formed in stripe shapes so as to face the discharge gap and a metal film of which a width is narrower than a width of the main electrode portion, and a sub-electrode portion formed at a side opposite to the discharge gap side of the main electrode portion which corresponds. With this configuration, a high image quality and a low power consumption can be obtained.

In order to improve the light emitting efficiency of a surface-discharge type color PDP, a sustaining electrode is divided into a plurality of electrodes formed in respective different layers. Lower electrodes and upper electrodes in different layers are formed as electrode pairs, an upper dielectric layer is formed on the upper electrodes in an upper layer to make a dielectric layer on the surface-discharge electrode pair thin to thereby maintain the discharge sustaining voltage low and obtain high light emitting efficiency.

A plasma display panel (PDP), in which a high quality image is displayed by making its luminance and its luminance efficacy high and also its power consumption is reduced, is provided. The plasma display panel provides a group of plural pairs of sustaining electrodes covered with a dielectric layer on a first glass substrate by placing a discharge gap between the pair of sustaining electrodes, and a gas being filled up between the first glass substrate and a second glass substrate facing the first glass substrate. And an image is displayed on the PDP by irradiating ultraviolet light, which is obtained by making the group of plural pairs of the sustaining electrodes on the first glass substrate discharge by applying voltages to the group of plural pairs of the sustaining electrodes, on a fluorescent material. And the main surface discharge electrode is composed of plural fine patterned wires and/or opening parts where electrodes are not formed.

Plasma display panel

In a plasma display panel, data electrodes are formed parallel to each other on a first substrate, and a selection voltage is to be applied to them. A dielectric layer covers a surface of the first substrate to include the data electrodes. Linear partitions are formed at a predetermined interval on the first substrate to be parallel to the data electrodes. A second substrate opposes the first substrate. A closed space between the first and second substrates is filled with a gas. Intersections of a pair of sustain discharge electrodes and data electrodes form matrix-like discharge cells. Stepped partitions are formed at a predetermined interval on the first substrate in a direction intersecting the linear partitions.

Plasma display panel and method of manufacturing the same

A plasma display panel having an improved display quality with low power consumption is provided. Pairs of first and second sustain electrodes are formed on the inner surface of a first substrate to extend in a first direction. A first dielectric layer is formed on the inner surface of the first substrate to cover the pairs of first and second sustain electrodes. Selection electrodes are formed on the inner surface of a second substrate to extend in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. A second dielectric layer is formed on the inner surface of the second substrate to cover the selection electrodes. Partition walls are formed in the gap between the first and second substrates to extend in the second direction, thereby forming discharge spaces in the gap. Fluorescent layers are formed in the respective discharge spaces. A discharge gas is introduced in the discharge spaces. An overlapping part of the first dielectric layers with the first sustain electrodes has a non-uniform thickness in the widthwise direction of the first sustain electrode. An overlapping part of the first dielectric layers with the second sustain electrodes has a non-uniform thickness in the widthwise direction of the second sustain electrode. The non-uniform thickness is realized by protrusions or depressions for the first dielectric layer.

An AC-discharge color plasma display panel has a matrix of unit discharge spaces which include unit discharge spaces for emitting light in the same color that are arranged along the scan electrodes, and sets of three adjacent unit discharge spaces for emitting light in three different colors that are arranged along the data electrode. Scan pulses and data pulses applied to the unit discharge spaces to generate writing discharges according to display information and pairs of sustaining pulses applied to the unit discharge spaces to generate and maintain sustaining discharges are controllable with respect to pulse durations, oscillation frequencies, voltages, etc. for each of the colors. A method of driving the AC-discharge color plasma display panel is also disclosed.

Color plasma display panel and method of driving the same

In a gas discharge display element according to the present invention, two pairs of electrodes are arranged in a discharge space of a display cell and one of the electrode pairs which forms a first discharge space between the first electrodes is driven such that discharge having a memory function and capable of being memory-driven is produced during a time in which light emission of the display cell is sustained. The other electrode pair is driven with a voltage pulse having duration smaller than that of the driving voltage pulse for the first electrode pair such that discharge a is obtained in the other space defined between the electrodes of the other electrode pair using the discharge in the first space as a seed discharge. The duration of the drive pulse for the second electrode pair preferably terminates before the discharge current is reduced due to the formation of a wall charge.
