The magnetizer includes a first yoke portion, a second yoke portion, and a magnetization coil. The first yoke portion has an opposing portion facing an outer peripheral surface of the rotor. The second yoke portion forms a magnetic path together with the first yoke portion. The magnetization coil is disposed on the magnetic path of the first and second yoke portions. The magnetizer magnetizes the permanent magnet by energizing the magnetization coil to apply a magnetizing magnetic flux at least through the rotor between the first yoke portion and the second yoke portion, which are located opposed to each other in a radial direction of the rotor.

A harmonic setting unit sets, based on the magnetic flux information acquired by the magnetic flux information acquiring unit, a harmonic command value for supplying a reduction current to the winding. The reduction current is a harmonic current for reducing variation in a radial electromagnetic force acting on a rotor of the rotating electric machine. An operating unit operates, based on the fundamental command value set by the fundamental setting unit and the harmonic command value set by the harmonic setting unit, an electric power converter to supply the winding with a drive current that is obtained by superimposing the reduction current on the fundamental current.

A motor in which drive current supplied to a winding is controlled in accordance with a rotational position of a rotor detected from a waveform of an induced voltage between phases. The motor is provided with a stator including 3&#xd7;n teeth and windings for three phases. A rotor includes a rotor core, an n number of magnets, and an n number of salient poles. The magnets function as one of the magnetic poles, the salient poles function as the other one of the magnetic poles. Each salient pole is spaced apart by a gap from the adjacent ones of the magnets in the circumferential direction. The magnets and gap are arranged inward in the radial direction from the rotor core. An electrical angle between two ends of each magnet is set to be smaller than an electrical angle between two ends of each salient pole.

The microcomputer checks whether the starter was driven within the predetermined time period, when the battery voltage is restored and the starter drive is completed. The microcomputer drives the ultrasonic motor again if the check result indicates that the starter motor was driven.

An ultrasonic motor drive apparatus includes a transformer having a primary coil and a secondary coil which drives a piezoelectric body of an ultrasonic motor. One end and the other end of the primary coil are connected to the drains of MOSFETS. The gates of the MOSFETs are connected to receive switching signals to alternately turn on and off electrical currents which flow in the primary coil. The sources of the MOSFETs are connected to the ground through ferrite beads, respectively. The ferrite bead generates a counter electromotive voltage so that the surge voltage which develops on the drain of the MOSFET at the time of turning off of the MOSFET is suppressed and high frequency oscillations are suppressed.
