A vehicle lighting unit forming low-beam and high-beam light distribution patterns can include: a light source having a substrate, and a first light-emitting section and a second light-emitting section arranged in two rows on a surface of the substrate; a first optical system configured to control light emitted from the first light-emitting section to form at least part of the low-beam light distribution pattern; a second optical system configured to control light emitted from the second light-emitting section to form at least part of the high-beam light distribution pattern; a light-shielding section disposed between the first light-emitting section and the second light-emitting section, the light-shielding section configured to shield part of the light from the first light-emitting section so as not to enter the second optical system; and a control unit configured to control to form the low-beam light distribution pattern or the high-beam light distribution pattern.

Light distribution characteristics are defined which define a correspondence relation between the position of a reflection point on a reference plane and the position of an image of a light source. In accordance with the light distribution characteristics, a path line in the reference plane is determined. A profile curve for each of a plurality of sampling points dispersibly distributed on the path line, is determined in accordance with the light distribution characteristics, the profile curve passing through the sampling point and corresponding to the topological shape of a reflecting surface to be determined. As the reflection point moves along the profile curve, the image of the light source moves in the direction crossing the reference plane in accordance with the light distribution characteristics. The topological shape of the reflecting surface is determined in accordance with the profile curve determined for each sampling point.

A valve operating system in an internal combustion engine includes a cam shaft provided with a valve operating cam, a rocker arm having a pair of support wall portions which are integrally connected at their base ends to a swinging support portion swingably supported on a support member mounted on a cylinder head and which are opposed to each other at a distance in a direction along the swinging axis of the swinging support portion, a support shaft supported between the support wall portions, and a roller which is rotatably supported on the support shaft with a bearing interposed therebetween so as to be in rolling contact with the valve operating cam. A lower connecting wall interconnecting lower portions of the base ends of the support wall portions is projectingly provided on the swinging support portion in a manner opposed to an outer peripheral surface of a lower portion of the roller. Thus, it is possible to increase the rigidity of the rocker arm, while avoiding an increase in size of the rocker arm.

Valve operating system in internal combustion engine

A valve operating system in an internal combustion engine includes a cam shaft provided with a plurality of valve operating cams, a plurality of rocker arms positioned adjacent one another, an associative operation switch capable of being switched between a state in which it permits the rocker arms adjacent each other to be operated associatively with each other, and a state in which it releases the associative operation. An urging means for urging the free rocker arm of the plurality of rocker arms toward the valve operating cam corresponding to the free rocker arm, which becomes free relative to an engine valve, when the associative operation switch is brought into the associative operation releasing state. The free rocker arm is provided with first and second support walls spaced apart and opposed to each other, and a roller is provided in rolling contact with a valve operating cam corresponding to the free rocker arm, and is rollably supported on a support shaft mounted to extend between the support walls through a bearing. In such valve operating system, one of the support walls included in the free rocker arm is integrally provided with a receiving portion which contacts with the urging means. Therefore, the structure of the free rocker arm can be simplified in such a manner that the receiving portion is positioned to the side of the roller. In addition, an increase in size of the free rocker arm can be avoided, and the inertial weight is reduced. Thus, it is possible to conveniently accommodate the high-speed rotation of the internal combustion engine.

A valve-operation control system for an internal combustion engine includes a timing transmitting device for transmitting the rotational power of a crankshaft at a speed reduction ratio of 1/4 to a cam shaft, and intake-side and exhaust-side valve operating devices. Each of the valve operating device includes a first cam provided on the cam shaft and having a single cam lobe protruding outwardly with a valve-opening profile suitable for an extremely low-speed operation of the engine, a second cam provided on the cam shaft and having a pair of cam lobes provided at locations circumferentially spaced apart through 180 degrees to protrude outwardly with an opening profile suitable for a low-speed operational state of the engine, a third cam provided on the cam shaft and having a pair of cam lobes provided at locations circumferentially spaced apart through 180 degrees to protrude outwardly with an opening profile suitable for a high-speed operational state of the engine, with first, second and third rocker arms following the first, second and third cams, respectively. A connection switchover device is provided in the first, second and third rocker arms for switching the selective connection and disconnection of the rocker arms in accordance with the operational state of the engine. The first rocker arm is operatively connected to the intake or exhaust valves for operation of the valves in an 8-cycle mode to inhibit the discharge of a harmful hydrocarbons at an extremely slow speed of the engine.

Valve-operation control system for internal combustion engine

A valve operating device for use in an internal combustion engine for varying operating characteristics of a pair of engine valves (20) in multi-stages depending upon operating conditions of the engine. A cam shaft (31) is provided with a high-speed cam (32), a pair of medium-speed cams disposed on opposite sides of the high-speed cam (32), and a pair of low-speed cams (34) disposed between the medium-speed cams (33) and the high-speed cam (32). A rocker shaft (35) is provided with a first free rocker arm (36) in sliding contact with the high-speed cam (32), a pair of driving rocker arms (37) operatively connected to the pair of engine valves (20), respectively, and in sliding contact with the low-speed cams (34), and a pair of second free rocker arms (38) disposed with the driving rocker arms (37) interposed between the second free rocker arms (38) and the first free rocker arm (36) to be in sliding contact with the medium-speed cams (33). First and second connection switching means (39, 40) are provided and separately switchable between states for selectively connecting the various rocker arms for operating the driving rocker arms (37) and engine valves (20) in low-speed, medium-speed and high-speed operating ranges of the engine.

Valve operating device for internal combustion engine

In a dual-fuel internal combustion engine which can selectively use gaseous fuel such as CNG or liquid fuel such as gasoline, a pair of intake passages are independently connected to a combustion chamber of the engine, and a gaseous fuel supply device and a liquid fuel supply device are provided in the corresponding intake passages so that the liquid and gaseous fuels may not mix with each other when the fuel for the engine is switched over one from the other as they are introduced into the combustion chamber through different intake passages. Further, by switching the operating mode of the intake valve when changing the fuel, the configuration of the intake passage can be optimized for each fuel, and the timing and the lift of the intake valves may also be optimized for each fuel without complicating the control structure of the overall system. The present invention can improve the torque output and the emission property of the dual-fuel engine.

An intake system of a multi-cylinder interval combustion engine including a common inlet duct, first and second resonating ducts branched from the downstream end of the inlet duct, first and second resonating chambers leading from the first and second resonating ducts, respectively, a plurality of first intake ducts for connecting the first resonating chamber to a first group of cylinders, respectively, having ignition timings set not to come adjacent to each other, respectively, a plurality of second intake ducts for connecting the second resonating chamber to a second group of cylinders, respectively, having ignition timings set not to come adjacent to each other, a common intake chamber capable of communicating with both the resonating chambers through communication ports which can be closed by valves, and an actuator for opening and closing the valves at least in response to the engine revolutions. A valve operating system is provided to control at least the closure timing of the intake valves at least in response to the engine revolutions.

A method for casting a rocker arm made of light alloy for use in an overhead cam shaft type valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine, which rocker arm includes a thick-walled bearing section to be fitted on a rocker arm shaft and is integrally provided with a wear-resistive piece having a protrusion on its rear surface and adapted to abut a cam. After molten metal has been injected under pressure into a metallic mold for the rocker arm, a secondary pressurizing force directed in the direction of an imaginary center axis of a rocker arm shaft is exerted by means of a pressurizing rod. In the metallic mold for the rocker arm, a sprue is provided close to the position where the wear-resistive piece is disposed with respect to the position where the bearing section is formed, and the direction of the sprue is directed towards the position where the wear-resistive place is disposed.

A lubricant supplying system for a DOHC type multicylinder internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of cylinders arranged in series in a cylinder block, a pair of cam shafts parallel to each other and rotatably supported by a cylinder head and cam holders fixed to the cylinder head at opposite sides of the respective cylinders along the cylinder arranging direction, a plurality of cams including low speed cams corresponding to intake and exhaust valves of the respective cylinders and fixed to the cam shafts, a plurality of rocker arms in slidable contact with the respective cams corresponding to the intake and exhaust valves of the respective cylinders, and a connection switching mechanism for switching connection and disconnection of the rocker arms in response to a hydraulic pressure to vary the operating states of the valves responsive to the operating state of the engine, wherein a hydraulic pressure supply passage independent from an oil supply passage for supplying a hydraulic pressure to the connection switching mechanism is provided in the cylinder head substantially at its center portion along the cylinder arranging direction so as to extend vertically, and a branch oil passage is provided to have intake and exhaust side portions disposed in one cam holder of substantially center location along the cylinder arranging direction for communicating with the upper end of the hydraulic pressure supply passage to supply oil to the slidably contacting portions of low speed cams of the respectively cylinders at both intake and exhaust sides with the rocker arms and the cam journal portions of the cam shafts.

A valve operating system for internal combustion engines comprises a free cam follower which is disposed between first and second drive cam followers operatively connected to engine valves and which is capable of becoming free relative to the engine valves, first and second guide holes respectively provided in the first and second drive cam followers with their axes corresponding to each other. The guide holes is opened to the free cam follower. A double open-ended guide hole is provided in the free cam follower in correspondence to the axes of the first and second guide holes. A first change-over pin is axially slidably received in the first guide hole and adapted to be fitted into the guide hole, and a second change-over pin is axially slidably received in said guide hole with one end thereof abutting against the first change-over pin, and is adapted to be fitted into said second guide hole. A restricting pin is axially slidably received in said second guide hole while being spring-biased toward said second change-over pin, with one end thereof abutting against the other end of said second change-over pin. This construction ensures that fitting of the first change-over pin into the guide hole as well as fitting of the second change-over pin into the second guide hole can be reliably performed.

Valve operating system for internal combustion engines

A drive cam follower operatively connected to an engine valve and a free cam follower capable of becoming free relative to the engine valve are adjacently disposed and adapted to impart in mutually different modes of operation in response to said engine valve rotation of a cam shaft. A connection change-over mechanism is provided between the cam followers and is capable of changing-over the interconnection and disconnection thereof, and resilient biasing means is provided between the free cam follower and the engine body for resiliently urging the free cam follower toward the cam shaft. The resilient biasing means comprises an urging piston slidably received in the engine body for abutment against the free cam follower, and a spring arrangement interposed between the urging piston and the engine body to resiliently bias the urging piston in a direction to abut against the free cam follower. The spring arrangement may comprise series-related springs having different spring constant with one of the springs having a non-linear load characteristic. A vent opening and a lubrication arrangement are provided to facilitate operation of the piston. The urging piston is provided, at its end closer to the free cam follower, with an abutment formed with a smaller diameter to abut against the free cam follower. This facilitates assembly of the resilient biasing means to the engine body, and makes it possible to dispose the resilient biasing means in proximity to a pivoting point of the free cam follower.

An SOHC type internal combustion engine wherein in a wall portion projectingly formed on a cylinder head and supporting a cam shaft is provided a bearing hole which supports a journal of the cam shaft having a larger diameter than the rotational path of the tip of a cam lobe, and an ignition plug insertion hole is provided continuous to an ignition plug mounting hole which is provided in the cylinder head and opens into the combustion chamber and wherein a protecting cylinder provided with the ignition plug insertion hole is integrally formed with the cam shaft receiving wall.

In a valve actuating device of four-cycle internal combustion engine, a valve actuating cam shaft for driving an opening and closing valve via a rocker arm is carried on a cam holder block, an adjusting bolt is held on the cam holder block so as to be adjustable relative to its position to the latter and the rocker arm is supported on a pivot portion integral with the adjusting bolt for rocking motion. Valve clearance between the rocker arm and the opening and closing valve is adjusted by displacing the position of adjusting bolt relative to the cam holder block.
