A control apparatus has one or more built-in functions that are selectively usable. The control circuit determines which of the built-in functions is selected, determines whether there is an external device to execute an external function related to the selected built-in function based on the first communication, controls an icon display to present to a user that the selected built-in function is also executable by the external device, and causes the second communication unit to communicate with the external device through a second communication to execute the external function when the external device is selected in accordance with the icon display.

An information recording/reproducing apparatus for recording or reproducing information on or from a recording medium in response to a command sent from a host computer has a cache memory serving as an intermediate memory and temporarily storing information to be transferred to or from the host computer. In response to an information record command sent from the host computer, completion of writing of information is reported to the host computer at the end of storing record data transferred from the host computer in the cache memory. The record data stored in the cache memory is written on a recording medium independently of data transfer between the host computer and intermediate memory. In response to an information playback command sent from the host computer, it is determined whether playback data requested by the host computer is consistent with unprocessed record data stored in the cache memory. When the playback data is inconsistent with or no duplicate of the unprocessed record data, writing of data from the cache memory onto the recording medium is suspended and processing requested with the information playback command is executed as a top priority.

Information recording/reproducing apparatus and data processing method

An optical head has a semiconductor laser for emitting light, a collimator lens for converting the light from the laser into a parallel light beam, a semiconductor substrate for reflecting the light beam, and an objective lens for focussing the light beam reflected from the substrate on the optical disk. A 1/4 wavelength plate is situated between the substrate and the objective lens. A beam splitter which transmits the light from the laser and reflects the light returning from the disk is provided between the collimator lens and the substrate. Following the beam splitter, a collective lens, a cylindrical lens and an optical detector are arranged in this order on an optical path for the returning light. A light receiving element for outputting a signal corresponding to the intensity of the light received is formed on the semiconductor substrate, and a polarizing film is formed on the surface thereof.
