Herein disclosed is a tiltable hanger apparatus including an overhead track assembly and a work-carrying assembly movable below and along the overhead track assembly. The work-carrying assembly is composed of a main carrier frame suspended from the overhead track assembly, an auxiliary carrier frame supported by the main carrier frame and arranged to be tiltable with respect to the main carrier frame in a fore-and-aft direction of the work-carrying assembly, and a hanger frame supported by the auxiliary carrier frame and angularly movable with respect to the auxiliary carrier frame about an axis normal to a plane perpendicular to the fore-and-aft direction of the work-carrying assembly. The auxiliary carrier frame is caused to tilt with respect to the main carrier frame in a fore-and-aft direction of the work-carrying assembly by the aid of a first set of guide rollers and rails. The hanger frame is held in engagement with a second set of guide rollers and rails arranged to cause the hanger frame to angularly turn with respect to the auxiliary carrier frame about the aforesaid axis.

Two parallel guide rails are arranged to put therebetween a stationary die of the hot-press machine and a table for sliding therealong respective movers by which a facing layer is carried from a first position to cover the table to a second position to cover the stationary die. First clamping means is disposed on the movers to clamp longitudinally opposed ends of the facing layer, and second clamping means is connected to the stationary die to clamp laterally opposed ends of the facing layer when the facing layer which has been kept clamped by the first clamping means is brought to the second position by means of the movers.

A trim panel, which is composed of a substrate of corrugated paperboard and a decorative and/or protective skin layer, is produced by press-forming the substrate into a desired shape by a hot-press, parting the movable die of the press from the stationary die to leave the shaped substrate in the latter die, dragging a sheet material employed as the skin into the press so as to stretch above the shaped substrate, and pressing the stretched skin material against the shaped substrate, interposing an adhesive layer therebetween unless the skin material has an adhesive property, with application of heat to accomplish adhesion. The hot-press is combined with a substrate feed mechanism and a skin material feed mechanism which includes a piston rod with a sheet-grasping device mounted thereon and can serve also the function of withdrawing the shaped and laminated product from the stationary die. At the second pressing, adjustment of the clearance between the dies according to the thickness of the skin is effective for achieving a uniform adhesion of the skin to the substrate without deforming the substrate.

One of two liners between which a corrugated medium is disposed is temporarily or expediently fixed to the medium. Upon press-forming, slippage of the temporarily fixed liner relative to the medium occurs, so that no wrinkles are produced in the liner.

In a method of press-forming a planer board of corrugated paperboard into a curved board which serves as the substrate of, for example, an automobile roof trim board by utilizing a thermoplastic adhesive in the production of the corrugated paperboard and applying heat to the planer board through dies in a hot-press, the liners of the corrugated paperboard are prevented from wrinkling by preheating the planer board so as to soften the thermoplastic adhesive therein immediately before placement between the dies. An apparatus to perform this method comprises a board carrier which has heaters and can carry the planer board into the hot-press with continued heating of the board.

In the production of a wall covering board which is shaped and composed of a substrate of corrugated paperboard and a decorative and/or protective skin layer, a hot-press for bonding of the skin to the substrate either simultaneously with or subsequently to shaping of the substrate is combined with a skin material support mechanism and a drag mechanism including a sheet-grasping device mounted on the piston rod of a piston actuator. The support mechanism supports, with friction force, a belt of a sheet material employed as the skin at its one end horizontally on one side of the press. The piston rod is horizontally extended from the opposite side of the press to traverse the press and allow the grasping device to grasp the supported end of the belt and then retreated until the grasping device returns to the opposite side of the press, so that the belt is stretched between the stationary and movable dies of the press. By applying heat and pressure to the stretched belt through the movable die, the belt, i.e. the skin, is bonded to the substrate on the stationary die without acquiring wrinkles.

Apparatus for inelastically deforming an initially flat blank of a corrugated fiberboard, comprising two die blocks movable relative to each other and having complementarily convex and concave pressing surfaces and blank retaining means adapted to clamp opposite marginal portions of a blank of a corrugated fiberboard being warped between the die blocks with the marginal portions urged sidewise inboardly of the die blocks, the blank retaining means being operative to restrain the blank from being moved in a direction parallel with the marginal portions but to allow the marginal portion of the blank to move the marginal portions of the blank sidewise inboardly of the die blocks in a direction perpendicular to the marginal portions so that not only production of creases in curved portions of the blank but production of fissures as would be caused if the blank is excessively stretched between the opposite marginal portions of the blank are precluded.

Apparatus for deforming corrugated fiberboard

A method of producing a shaped wall covering material composed of a corrugated cardboard substrate, a porous buffer layer adhered onto one side of the substrate and a thermoplastic resin liner coated on the outer surface of the buffer layer. The starting materials are set in a hot-press in an orderly piled arrangement with interposed adhesive materials and subjected to press-shaping between male and female dies with application of heat. During the shaping operation, air is sucked from the gap between the substrate and the shaped surface of one die through holes intentionally formed in this die. The resultant attraction of the piled materials to this die facilitates the shaping and prevents a layer-separation or deformation of the product attributable to a sticking tendency of the liner to the other die. The suction can be enhanced by forming pin-like protuberances on the die surface contacting the substrate to intrude into the buffer layer and squeezing the buffer layer and/or substrate in a marginal region by a periopheral wall-like protuberance formed, for example, on the other die surface.

In the production of a trim board such as an automobile roof trim board using a corrugated paperboard substrate which is bulged or dented in a comparatively small area and has an aperture in this area for the installation of a separate article, at least one linear notch is formed in a flat board of corrugated paperboard so as to extend transversal to the ridges of the corrugated medium and be entirely included in the area of the aperture as a preparatory procedure to press-forming of the corrugated paperboard. The presence of the notch allows some deformation of a tensioned liner also in the same direction as the ridges and hence precludes the appearance of cracks in the bulged or dented area. The notched region of the shaped board is thoroughly cut away as the result of the formation of the intended aperture.
