A method and apparatus is disclosed by which communication with a higher degree of accuracy can be achieved with increased easiness. A transmission apparatus transmits base data formed by dividing transmission data and redundant data produced by exclusive OR operation using a coefficient matrix prepared in advance to a reception apparatus. The base data and the redundant data have restoration relating information relating to a restoration process added thereto. The reception apparatus specifies lost base data based on the information added to the received base data and redundant data and aligns the acquired redundant data. The reception apparatus utilizes a coefficient matrix prepared in advance to perform exclusive OR operation to restore the lost base data and produces reception data corresponding to the original transmission data. The apparatus and method can be applied to a communication system.

When transmitting live information data, a reproduction start waiting time associated with reproduction of the live information data on the receiving side can be reduced. Encoded data is divided in sequence into a plurality of data segments each having a predetermined time length. In this case, the time length of each data segment is increased in sequence for each data segment until a predetermined time length is reached and is fixed to the predetermined time length after the predetermined time length is reached. The plurality of data segments which are formed in a divided manner are converted into a plurality of segmented packet data or a plurality of continuous packet data, and the data is transmitted through individual data transmission channels, thus performing multiple-channel parallel transmission.

There is disclosed a scanning electron charged-particle beam instrument facilitating a search for a desired field of view on a specimen. Also, a method of observing a specimen image with this instrument is disclosed. In field of view search mode, low-magnification images are gained from plural regions on the specimen. The image signals gained from the regions are sent to corresponding image memories and stored there. At the same time, the X and Y coordinates of the specimen at the low magnification are stored. If the image is rotated, the angular position and the direction are simultaneously stored. The image signals stored in the image memories are supplied to a CRT, and plural specimen images are displayed on the CRT. If a human operator selects a desired one out of the displayed images, a control unit controls a stage control unit according to coordinates read out, driving an X-Y translation stage. The stage is moved to bring a specimen position corresponding to the selected image onto the optical axis of the electron beam.

The memory card comprises a rectangular card body having terminals in the vicinity of one end and a storage device disposed in the card body for storing data. A switch on the card is operable to a state to prevent stored data from being erased; and a status signal representing the state of the switch is supplied to one or more of the terminals. The apparatus with which the card is used has mating terminals to receive the status signal. Depending upon the state of that status signal, the apparatus is selectively inhibited from writing data to the memory card or erasing data stored in the memory card.
