A large liquid crystal display () comprises a light guide plate () arranged on the back side of a liquid crystal panel (). The front surface of the light guide plate () is flat, while the back surface thereof is concave. The upper and lower end faces of the light guide plate () respectively facing hot cathode fluorescent lamps () have a convex shape projecting toward the respective lamps. White light from the fluorescent lamps is incident on the upper and lower end faces of the light guide plate directly or by being reflected by reflectors (), and propagates within the light guide plate while being reflected by the front and back surfaces of the light guide plate. At the front surface of the light guide plate, a part of the white light is directed toward the back side of the liquid crystal panel () by a light guide portion ().

A method of producing a metal laminate for a circuit board includes a first step of press-bonding a thermotropic liquid crystal polymer film having a segment orientation ratio SOR within a range not smaller than 0.90 and smaller than 1.15 along the longitudinal direction of the film, to a metal sheet between hot rolls while the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer film is in a tense or non-tense state; and a second step of heating the laminate obtained in the first step to a temperature not lower than the melting point of the thermotropic liquid crystal polymer film.

There is disclosed a synthetic resin powder comprising a polymer made from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a diolefinic monomer and a polyvinyl alcohol chemically bonded through a sulfide bond at an end thereof to the surface of a particle of the polymer. Although the synthetic resin powder of the present invention can be in the form of powder during transportation, it can easily be dispersed in water by adding water thereto under stirring, because it is excellent in dispersibility in water and blocking resistance. The synthetic resin powder is excellent also in film forming properties, and thus can preferably be used as an admixture for a mortar, etc.

A composition comprising (A) polyvinyl alcohol having an amino group connected to a phenyl group and (B) at least one water resistance-imparting agent selected from polyepoxy compound, aldehyde compound, polyisocyanate compound, and water-soluble oxidizing agent; the composition exhibits outstanding water resistance even when used at room temperature; the composition finds use as a woodworking adhesive, plywood adhesive, and two-part instantaneously curing adhesive which does not require heating for curing.

Disclosed herein is a paper coating agent which comprises a modified polyvinyl alcohol (A) containing 3 to 15 mol % of ethylene units and an alkali metal ion (B), with the ratio of component (A) to component (B) being 100:0.003 to 100:1 in parts by weight. Disclosed also herein is a heat-sensitive recording material which comprises a coating layer on a substrate, said coating layer comprising a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing 3 to 15 mol % of ethylene units. The paper coating agent of the present invention has such excellent solubility in boiling water that there is not a problem of insoluble matter in an aqueous solution of the coating agent. When applied for a paper surface coating agent, it gives coated paper without discoloration, superior, in surface strength, air barrier properties, and printability. When applied for a paper pigmented coating agent, it gives coated paper without discoloration, superior in water resistance and printability. The heat-sensitive recording material of the present invention is superior in color developing sensitivity, water resistance, oil resistance, plasticizer resistance, and PVC film resistance. Furthermore it is superior in high-speed printability and image resolution, and it can be used in the field, such as facsimile, where high-speed printing is required.

A vinyl alcohol polymer with a side chain being a hydroxyalkyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms is disclosed. Conventional water-soluble vinyl alcohol polymers gives, where they have a high interfacial activity, an aqueous solution with much-foaming and hence a problem when used for commercial purposes. On the other hand, the vinyl alcohol polymer of the present invention gives, where it is water-soluble, an aqueous solution with less-foaming in spite of its high interfacial activity, and hence an excellent industrial applicability. The vinyl alcohol polymer of the present invention is useful as thermoplastic resin and dispersion stabilizer. In addition, the vinyl alcohol polymer of the present invention is usable for various purposes, e.g. surfactants for various uses, paper coating agent, quality-improving agent for paper such as paper ingredients and pigment binders, adhesive for wood, paper, aluminum foil and inorganic materials, binder for nonwoven fabric, paint, warp sizing agent, fiber-processingagent, sizing agent for hydrophobic fibers such as polyester fiber, various films and sheets, bottles and fibers.

A film having a roughened surface. The film is made of an LCP and has surface recessions covering at least about 25% of the area of the surface. The film is made by pressing an embossing means against the film surface at a temperature about 15.degree.-75.degree. C. below the melting point of the polymer. The embossed film has improved resistance to abrasion.

A resin composition comprises an EVOH (A) and a thermoplastic polymer (B) having at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of boronic acid group, borinic acid group and boron-containing groups convertible into boronic acid group or borinic acid group in the presence of water. The composition may further comprise a thermoplastic polymer (C) other than (A) or (B). The resin compositions thus obtained have good compatibility and give molded products having superior transparency and good mechanical properties.

The invention provides a multilayer microelectronic circuit board including a laminate of a plurality of circuit layers containing conductive vias within the layers or a combination of conductive vias and conductive wiring patterns on a surface of the layers, the layers comprising a first liquid crystal polymer and, interposed between said circuit layers, a layer of second liquid crystal polymer having a melting point of at least about 10.degree. C. lower than the melting point of the first liquid crystal polymer. The boards are produced by stacking a plurality of circuit layer sheets in appropriate electrical alignment such that they are separated by an interposed layer of the second liquid crystal polymer of lower melting point, and heating the stacked polymer sheets under pressure sufficient to bond the sheets or layers into a microelectronic printed circuit board, the temperature of the heating being sufficient to melt the lower melting second polymer but insufficient to melt the polymer present in the circuit layers. The second polymer layer may be interposed as a separate sheet during assembly or may be present as one or two separate surface layers in contact with the higher melting point polymer of the circuit layers.

According to the present invention, there are provided a process for producing a vinyl alcohol polymer comprising reaction of a vinyl ester polymer (A) having an epoxy group with a compound (B) having a thiol or thioester group and hydrolysis thereof, said hydrolysis being conducted during or after said reaction; and a process for producing a vinyl alcohol polymer comprising reaction of a vinyl ester polymer (C) having a thiol or thioester group with a compound (D) having an epoxy group and hydrolysis thereof, said hydrolysis being conducted during or after said reaction. According to the present invention, it is possible to efficiently introduce into PVA various functional groups having excellent reactivity, crosslinkability, ionic interactivity, water-solubility, interfacial physical properties, low-temperature flexibility, etc., under relatively mild reaction conditions. According to the present invention, in addition, it is possible to introduce into PVA such various functional groups, which could not be obtained by conventional methods.

A process for treating a liquid crystal polymer film which includes the steps of: heating a film obtained by extrusion molding of a liquid crystal polymer, while contacting at least one surface of the film with a supporting body, to melt the polymer; cooling the melted polymer to form a solidified polymer layer; and separating the solidified polymer layer from the supporting body. The process readily provides liquid crystal polymer films having excellent resistance to intra-layer delamination and high tensile strength and elongation, as well as excellent resistance to abrasion, dimensional stability when heated, and resistance to folding.
