A friction material particularly useful as a clutch facing is prepared by (a) impregnating a fiber base material with a binder, said fiber being other than asbestos fiber and being stable to heat without reduction in weight and in volume in an atmosphere at 300.degree. C.; (b) shaping the impregnated fiber into the predetermined shape of a crude friction material; (c) inserting said shaped material into the cavity of a mold which has been heated to a predetermined temperature; (d) pressure/heat treating said shaped material by compressing the crude friction material for 2 to 10 seconds at a predetermined pressure and at a predetermined temperature in a closed mold and degassing the compressed friction material for 0.5 to 2 seconds in an open mold, and repeating the cycle of step (d) 10 to 20 times.

A clutch facing material including strings of asbestos to which are applied a mixture of cashew dust resin and graphite which is in turn mixed with cashew dust. The graphite is inseparably contained in the mixture of cashew dust resin and graphite and, in combination with the cashew dust, provides a clutch facing material showing a high frictional coefficient even at high temperatures.

A method of manufacturing a clutch facing including the steps of mixing graphite and phenolic resin to form a graphite mixture, soaking an asbestos fiber string within the mixture, removing the soaked string such that phenolic resin content of between 14-24 weight percents and graphite content of between 1-8 weight percents for every 100 weight percents is produced and bonding the string to the clutch facing such that the Rockwell hardness of the clutch facing is between 20-60 on the Moh scale.
