Edges of layers are detected from an input image to create a boundary line candidate image that represents the detected edges. A luminance value of the input image is differentiated to create a luminance value-differentiated image that represents luminance gradient of the layers. An evaluation score image is created which is obtained by weighting calculation at an optimum ratio between a boundary line position probability image and the luminance value-differentiated image. The boundary line position probability image is obtained from the boundary line candidate image and an existence probability image that represents existence of a boundary line to be extracted. A route having the highest total evaluation score is extracted as the boundary line. According to such an image processing apparatus and image processing method, boundary lines of layers can be extracted with a high degree of accuracy from a captured image of a target object composed of a plurality of layers.

The tomographic image capturing device of the present invention includes a tomographic image capturing means that scans measurement light on a subject's eye fundus (E) to capture tomographic images of the subject's eye fundus and an image processing means that compresses a picture of the captured tomographic images in a scan direction to generate a new tomographic picture. The tomographic image capturing means performs scan at a second scan pitch (P) narrower than a first scan pitch (P) to capture the tomographic images of the subject's eye fundus. The image processing means compresses the picture (B) of the tomographic images captured at the second scan pitch (P) in the scan direction to generate the new tomographic picture (B). Image processing device and method to identify disease in an ocular fundus image

The tomographic image capturing device of the present invention comprises a display means () configured to: split light from a light source () into measurement light and reference light and cause the measurement light and the reference light to be incident to an object (E) and a reference object (), respectively; capture tomographic images of the object (E) on the basis of interference light generated by superposition of the measurement light reflected from the object (E) and the reference light reflected from the reference object (); and display tomographic pictures of the object generated on the basis of the captured tomographic images. The tomographic image capturing device has a first image capturing mode and a second image capturing mode. The first display mode is a mode in which a plurality of tomographic pictures including a region of interest of the object (E) is selected from among the tomographic pictures generated on the basis of the tomographic images captured in the second image capturing mode and only the selected plurality of tomographic pictures is displayed. The second display mode is a mode in which all of the tomographic pictures generated on the basis of the tomographic images captured in the second image capturing mode are in turn displayed. The capturing of the tomographic images in the first image capturing mode is performed after separately performing a first adjustment operation and a second adjustment operation for adjustment of an image capturing condition necessary for capturing the tomographic images in the first image capturing mode. The first adjustment operation is based on the tomographic pictures displayed in the first display mode. The second adjustment operation is based on the tomographic pictures displayed in the second display mode.

A three-dimensional tomographic image (B) is formed which is composed of a plurality of two-dimensional tomographic images obtained by scanning an ocular fundus. A contour of a certain 2D region (M, M, M, M) in the tomographic image is determined for each tomographic image, and the volume of a certain 3D region is calculated through correcting each area of the certain 2D region defined by the determined contour or its accumulated value using an image correction coefficient in accordance with the diopter of the subject's eye. Even for subjects' eyes of different diopters, the influence of the diopter correction is eliminated and a quantitative comparison of subjects' eyes of different diopters is possible.

An average image producing meansproduces an average image from all or some of a plurality of images captured at the same location. A noise extracting meansextracts a noise pixel on the basis of the result of a comparison between the pixel values of the pixels in the captured images and the pixel values of the pixels at the same position in the average image. An interpolating meansinterpolates the pixel value of the noise pixel included in the captured images using the pixel values of other pixels to produce a noise-eliminated image.

An ocular fundus image is captured by a fundus camera. Blood vessel regions are erased from the ocular fundus image, and a luminance region greater than a prescribed luminance threshold value and having an area equivalent to a predetermined standard disc area is extracted as a region having a standard disc area. The region having the standard disc area is divided into a plurality of regions by a plurality of dividing lines extending radially from the center of gravity thereof, and divided regions are scanned radially from the center of gravity while angles are shifted to detect in each individual region a point at which luminance variation reaches a maximum. The contour line of the disc region is derived from these points.

A model eye that models the optical characteristics of a human eye and is endowed with a grayscale pattern on the ocular fundus model surface is stereographically photographed with a parallax via a stereo photographic optical system. Photographed images are processed to provide calibration data for correcting the shape distortions of the stereo photographic optical system. The calibration data is used to correct a distortion-affected shape data and parallax images obtained in stereographic photography of the actual ocular fundus of a subject's eye. The shape distortion-corrected parallax image is used for a three-dimensional measurement process and 3D display on a stereo monitor. This allows an accurate three-dimensional measurement to be carried out and an accurate fundus image to be produced. The examiner can accurately evaluate the stereo shape of the ocular fundus of the subject's eye.
