A fuel system for an internal combustion engine comprises a pair of carburetors provided one each on the exhaust and intake side of the engine. The fuel-air mixture from the first carburetor is heated by exhaust gas before being introduced into an intake manifold through a passage within a cylinder head. Throttle valves are associated with the respective carburetors and are controlled in an interlocked manner so as to open the throttle valve associated with the first carburetor while maintaining the other throttle valve closed during a partial load operation, and to open the throttle valve associated with the second carburetor to supply the air enriched mixture to the cylinders while closing the first mentioned throttle valve during a full load operation. Alternatively, a combined use of supply from the first and second carburetors concurrently may be chosen.

An intake manifold for a multicylinder internal combustion engine has a riser connectable to a carburetor and branch pipes connecting the riser and each suction port of respective cylinders of the engine, and is characterized by being provided with orifice means located at a position in each said branch pipe for defining the cross sectional area of the position to a preselected magnitude thereby rendering pressure in each said branch pipe and each said intake ports of the cylinder equal. The orifice means can be constituted by a plate-shaped gasket having orifices to be located in the positions in each said branch pipes.

A deflector plate for changing the stream of a fuel-air mixture is provided at a downstream position of the cylindrical member. Further, a cylindrical member with a deflector plate is disposed in the downstream of the primary vaporizing barrel of a duplex carburetor, and a cylindrical member with a slant port is disposed downstream of the secondary vaporizing barrel.

A system for heating the intake pipe of an internal combustion engine including a combustion equipment disposed adjacent to the intake pipe, a fuel supply system for supplying the fuel into the combustion equipment and an air supply system including an air pump for charging the air into the combustion equipment, the intake pipe being heated by the heat generated by the combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion equipment. The fuel supply system includes a main fuel injection nozzle and an auxiliary fuel injection nozzle which is controlled by control means so as to start or stop the fuel injection depending upon the operating conditions of the engine. When the engine is started, both the main and auxiliary fuel injection nozzles inject fuel so as to attain the rapid heating of the intake pipe, but when the temperature of the intake pipe exceeds a predetermined level, the injection by the auxiliary fuel injection nozzle is stopped. The heating system further includes a secondary air supply line interconnecting the air pump and the exhaust manifold of the engine and control means for controlling the flow rate of the secondary air in response to the negative pressure in the intake pipe, thereby controlling the flow rate of the air to be charged into the combustion equipment.

An exhaust system for multi-cylinder internal combustion engines, which is directed to the so-called proportional exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for improving engine exhausts. The system comprises an exhaust gas recirculating circuit connected to one engine cylinder for recirculating to an intake pipe of the engine the entire amount of exhaust gas which is discharged from said one engine cylinder. Switching means is provided in said exhaust gas recirculating circuit for switching the flow of the recirculating exhaust gas in response to a value of a predetermined parameter indicating particular operating conditions of said engine. Heat exchanging means is provided in said exhaust gas recirculating circuit in contact with said intake pipe of the engine for heating said intake pipe by heat exchange with hot exhaust gas flowing through said exhaust gas recirculating circuit, and a reactor is provided in the exhaust pipe of the engine for receiving for cleaning purposes the entire amount of exhaust gases which are discharged from engine cylinders other than said one engine cylinder.

The fuel-air mixture distribution in a multi-cylinder engine is provided by a hollow cylinder disposed immediately downstream of and in coaxial relation with a carburetor barrel and a deflector is attached to the dischage or downstream end or opening of the hollow cylinder so that the fuel-air mixture flow may be deflected. The deflector is inclined downwardly toward the cylinders. In another embodiment, a hollow cylinder having a deflector attached at its discharge end, is also attached to the discharge opening of the primary carburetor barrel. A slanting opening is formed through the side wall of the hollow cylinder.

An air-fuel ratio adjusting device in an internal combustion engine having a carburetor, comprising an oxygen sensor whereby oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is detected and control means whereby the detected oxygen concentration is compared with the air-fuel ratio in the mixture and an output signal corresponding to the difference therebetween is produced, the output signal being applied to an electromagnetic fuel injection system provided in the carburetor. A regulator is provided between the main fuel supply system and the electromagnetic fuel injection system in the carburetor. Also, a cold start nozzle which is controlled on engine starting is provided in the intake system.

Apparatus comprising a tubular housing connected to the suction pipe of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine at one end and the intake manifold thereof at the other end, and a plurality of twisted blades positioned in the tubular housing along the axis thereof. The blades are adapted to impart a whirling motion to a mixture of fuel and air or of fuel, air and a recyclic portion of exhaust gas flowing through the tubular housing and reform it into a homogeneous mixture, without creating any appreciable resistance to the flow of the mixture.
