A control system for automatically stopping and starting the vehicle's engine is disclosed, which performs the automatic engine-stop and start control while the negative pressure of the fuel tank is maintained at a suitable level. The system comprises a canister for absorbing evaporating fuel generated in the fuel tank and purging the absorbed evaporating fuel into an air intake system of the engine; a pressure control section for controlling the inner pressure of the fuel tank in a manner such that the internal pressure is maintained at a predetermined level lower than the atmospheric pressure at least while the engine is operated; and an engine stop/start determining section for stopping or starting the vehicle according to the driving state of the vehicle, wherein the engine stop/start determining section determines to prohibit an engine stopping operation when the internal pressure of the fuel tank is higher than the predetermined level.

An abnormality diagnosis apparatus for an evaporative emission control system which includes a fuel tank, a canister for adsorbing evaporative fuel generated in the fuel tank, an evaporative fuel passage connecting the fuel tank and an intake system, a first control valve interposed in a charging passage, a second control valve interposed in a purge passage, a third control valve interposed in a vent passage, and a fourth control valve interposed in the evaporative fuel passage for opening and closing the evaporative fuel passage. Disclosed herein is an evaporative emission control system which can prevent changes in fuel component in the fuel tank and vacuum boiling in the fuel pump to thereby accurately control the air-fuel ratio to a desired value and ensure smooth supply of the fuel. The control system includes an evaporative fuel passage for connecting a fuel tank and an intake system of an internal combustion engine, and a control valve is provided in the evaporative fuel passage for opening and closing the evaporative fuel passage. A fuel tank T has a seal member,provided at a fuel entry port,provided at an upper end of a filler pipe,extending continuously to a tank main body,for sealing the outer circumference of a nozzle of a fuel filling gun G. A first relief valve,and a second relief valve,which are adapted to open when the internal pressure of the filler pipe,reaches or exceeds a predetermined value are provided along a first relief passage,and a second relief passage,, respectively, which continuously extend to the filler pipe,. When excessive fuelling occurs, the first relief valve,is made to open so that fuel inside the filler pipe,is allowed to be discharged to the outside thereof, and the second relief valve,is made to open so that part of fuel inside the filler pipe,is allowed to flow out into the fuel entry port,located above the seal member so as to inform the operator of a fuel filling pump of the occurrence of an abnormal situation to thereby prompt him or her to stop fueling.

A pressure sensor detects pressure within the fuel tank. The opening of the control valve is controlled such that the interior of the fuel tank is held under negative pressure. After termination of negative pressurization of the fuel tank, the amount of fuel supplied to the engine is increased according to an amount of increase in the pressure within the fuel tank detected by the pressure sensor.

A failure detection system detects a failure occurring in an exhaust secondary air supply system of an internal combustion engine, and has a catalytic converter installed in an exhaust pipe of an exhaust system of the engine for reducing pollutants from exhaust gases emitted from the engine, a conduit connected, at one end, to the exhaust pipe at a location upstream of the catalytic converter and an air pump connected to an opposite end of the conduit for supplying compressed air in the conduit. The conduit is closed by the a valve which opens in response to the negative pressure and a second valve which opens in response to the conduit pressure. In the system a first prescribed level and the second prescribed level are set and two pressure switches are provided for generating output at the levels. A failure occurring in the air pump and the valve is detected based on operation of the air pump and the output of the pressure detectors. Alternatively, the failure is detected by changing the timing of the termination of the air pump and closing of the second valve while using one switch and the second prescribed level. The system is simple in configuration.
