A first server including a local disk and a second server are logically partitioned by virtualization units. The first and second servers each have a storage controller LPAR with a local disk sharing function running thereon. The storage controller LPARs running on the first and second servers communicate with each other. When a disk I/O command issued by the second LPAR running on the second server is transferred to the local disk of the first server, the second LPAR reads data stored in the local disk or writes data thereto. In this way, the local disk is shared.

One load module which is to be operated during rebooting of the operating system is held in a memory, while establishing a state capable of accepting interrupt to be processed by the one load module. A computer system of a multi-operation-system (multi-OS) has a main memory having a memory area for a first OS and a memory area for a second OS, both the areas being independent from each other, and a plurality of I/O devices divisionally allocated to the first OS and the second OS. The first OS is loaded in the first OS memory area, and thereafter when the first OS is operated, the second OS is loaded in the second OS memory area and initialized. When the first OS is operated, the first OS hardware resources and the second OS hardware resources are registered by the first OS. Thereafter when the first OS is operated, the first OS inhibits the registration of an interrupt number already allocated to the second OS I/O device. In response to an interrupt request from a second OS I/O device, the second OS starts operating.

A manager transmits an I/O bus signal to an I/O bus manager in a computer at a predetermined point of time to inform the I/O bus manager of occurrence of an I/O bus fault. The I/O bus manager initializes an I/O bus and then informs a CPU in the computer of the I/O bus fault as an interruption to be processed by an OS operated by the CPU, whereby the OS can acquire the fault information after the interruption even in the case where an I/O bus fault occurs.

Techniques of improving the safety of an information processing system at low cost are provided, the information processing system having an OS provided with an access control function based upon discretionary access control for preventing illegal accesses to files. A method and apparatus for providing the information processing system with functions and areas usable only by a specific user different from a system administrator. The areas are provided with an access control function in order to prevent the access control function from being tampered.

A fault of an operating system (OS) is observed, and in addition to application program (AP) fault monitoring, check-point information is preserved without adding dedicated hardware. In a computer having a multi-OS environment, an AP fault monitor and a monitored AP operate on a first OS. A fault monitor operates on a second OS. Each of the first OS and the AP fault monitor transmits an alive message to the fault monitor by utilizing an inter-OS communication function of a multi-OS controller. The fault monitor monitors the alive message of each of the first OS and the AP fault monitor. The monitored AP also transmits an alive message to the AP fault monitor for monitoring. The monitored AP preserves check-point information in a region of a memory. In the region of the memory, information is preserved by a fault and restart of the first OS as well.

A physical memory of a single computer is divided for each of a plurality of operating system (OS). A first OS is first loaded into the computer and runs. A multi-OS management program common to a plurality of OSs is incorporated into a virtual address space of the first OS as a device driver of the first OS. The multi-OS management program incorporated as the device driver is rearranged in a memory area shared by OSs so that the multi-OS management program has the same virtual address in any OS. In this state, the second OS program itself is loaded in the virtual address space of the second OS by execution of the multi-OS management program in the first OS. Execution of the multi-OS management program is switched from the multi-of management program in the first OS to the multi-OS management program in the second OS. Then, the second OS is started by execution of the multi-OS management program in the second OS to thereby run the plurality of OSs on the single computer.

Multi-OS configuration method

The present invention realizes configuration management, failure monitoring and control of hardware resources in an open architecture computer on which a plurality of OSs run. A management agentrun on a partitionperforms communication with a management console, management of data on hardware and software failure occurred in the partition, and communication with a partitioning control unit. The partitioning control unitutilizes partition configuration informationto manage and control hardware allocated to each partition, and to intermediate communication between the hardwareand the management agents. A hardware data collection unitmanages configuration information of all the hardware in the computer, and monitors status of and failures in the hardware.

In a cluster system including a plurality of operating systems operating on one computer, computer resources can be updated for and reallocated to each operating system. When the operating systems are used as active or standby operating systems, a multiple operating system management controller monitors the state of each operating system. At a failure of an active operating system, the controller allocates a larger part of computer resources to another operating system in a normal state and assigns the operating system as a new active operating system. Regardless of the failure, the computer system can be operated without changing processing capability thereof. The controller can monitor load of each operating system to allocate computer resources to the operating system according to the load.

Computer system and a method for controlling a computer system

An inter-OS control software for switching OS's in operation executed on a single CPU is installed, and plural OS's are made alternately executed. A control program is executed exclusively on one OS, which controls the controlled apparatus. A supervisory control program and a development environment program are executed on another OS, and a memory space is divided so as to make no effect for the operation of the control program. A higher real-time performance and reliability can be established with a single CPU architecture.
