A torque sensor comprising a magnetic amorphous film whose magnetostrictive characteristics vary with the amount of torque applied thereto and coils for detecting magnetostrictive variation disposed opposite the magnetic member. The torque sensor is constituted as an independent unit separate from the shaft whose torque is to be measured. The independent unit comprises a tubular or a shaft member having the magnetic amorphous film attached thereto and a housing with the coils at its inner wall. The housing covers the tubular or shaft member and is rotatable about the same axis as the member. The tubular member is easily mounted on the shaft through spline fittings in one embodiment and the short shaft member of the other embodiment is easily mounted between the two shaft ends via spline fittings and flange couplings.

Torque sensor

A valve operation control system for an internal combustion engine having an engine valve supported in an engine body for opening and closing. A phase control means is interposed between a crankshaft and the valve operating cam shaft to control the rotating phase of the crankshaft relative to the valve operating cam shaft. A valve drive means is interposed between the valve operating cam and the engine valve to transmit the valve opening force by the valve operating cam to the engine valve. The valve drive means includes a resilient valve opening means for generating resilient force in the valve opening direction and a holding means for holding the engine valve in a closed position while springs accumulate the valve opening force. The holding means is selectively operable to switch between a valve holding state and a valve releasing state to control the valve opening timing of the engine valve in response to operating conditions of said engine.

Valve operation control system of internal combustion engine

A valve operation control system in an internal combustion engine, comprising an engine valve openably and closably supported on an engine body, a valve spring for biasing the engine valve in a valve closing direction, and valve driving means interposed between a valve-operating cam and the engine valve to transmit a force in the valve-opening direction provided by the valve-operating cam to the engine valve. The valve driving means includes a valve-opening resilient member for exhibiting a repulsive force in a direction to open the engine valve, and closed-position retaining means is interposed between the engine valve and the valve operating cam for retaining the engine valve at its closed position, with a valve-opening force provided by the valve-operating cam being accumulated by the valve-opening resilient member. The closed-position retaining means is arranged to be switchable between a retaining state and a releasing state to control the timing of opening the engine valve depending upon the operational condition of the engine.

The method of manufacturing the torque member comprises the steps of first copper plating and then solder plating a torque transmission member and a magnetic member destined to be attached to the outer circumference of the torque transmission member, wrapping the magnetic member on the torque transmission member, and solder-bonding the torque transmission member and the magnetic member by heating them while uniform pressure is being applied to the entirety of the wrapped region.

A valve operating device for an internal combustion engine that includes a valve piston having one end facing into a damper chamber and the other end operatively coupled to an intake or exhaust valve which is spring-biased in a closing direction. A cam piston has one end operatively coupled to a cam drivable by a crankshaft and the other end disposed in a working oil chamber. A restriction mechanism uniformly restricts oil flow during final valve closing operation of the intake or exhaust valve until the valve is fully closed. The working oil chamber and damper chamber are held in communication with each other through the restriction mechanism. A bypass passage interconnects the damper chamber and the working oil chamber in bypassing relation to the restriction mechanism. A variable restriction mechanism is provided in the bypass passage capable of varying the area for oil flow according to valve closing characteristics required by the viscosity of working oil and operating conditions of the engine.

Valve operating device for internal combustion engine

A torque sensor comprising a magnetic amorphous film whose magnetostrictive characteristics vary with the amount of torque applied thereto and coils for detecting magnetostrictive variation disposed opposite the magnetic film and is detachably coupled with a shaft whose torque is to be measured. The shaft is cut into two halves and the unit has flange couplings connected to the one half of the shaft while receiving the other shaft half at its boss. The boss is elongated to form a tubular portion on which said magnetic film is affixed and an enclosure member houses the tubular portion. The coils are attached on the inner wall of the enclosure member to keep a distance from the film affixed on the tubular portion.

Control apparatus for an intake valve and/or an exhaust valve which are slidably mounted for reciprocating movement relative to a valve seat in a cylinder head including an electromagnetic solenoid fixed to the cylinder head and a magnetic pole fixed to at least one of the valves with the magnetic pole opposing the solenoid with a small gap therebetween when the valve(s) is in the open position and a control device for supplying electric current to the electromagnetic solenoid in a predetermined manner responsive to engine operation conditions. The valve(s) is moved to the open position by a cam, electric current is supplied to the electromagnetic solenoid to hold the valve(s) in the open position for a predetermined time and the valve(s) is closed by a return spring when the electromagnetic solenoid is deenergized.

Spark timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine having a throttle controlled intake passage for an air-fuel mixture. A vehicle is powered by the engine. A vacuum line from the intake passage downstream from the throttle valve is connected to a three-way valve which, in turn, has one conduit connected to a spark advance chamber and another conduit connected to a spark retard chamber. Another valve closes the vacuum line when the engine temperature is low. An electrical switch sensitive to velocity of the vehicle actuates the three-way valve electromagnetically to connect the vacuum line to either of said chambers for actuating a movable member which controls the ignition timing of the engine. The conduit leading to the spark retard chamber also leads to a vacuum chamber in an additional fuel supply system having a valve, so that when the spark is retarded the additional fuel supply is cut off.

Ignition timing control for engine

A starter system for a hot internal combustion engine, the starter system including a first valve which opens upon starting of the engine in a heated state to permit supplemental air to be drawn into the engine intake passage to dilute the air-fuel mixture therein, and a second valve down stream of the first valve arranged to cut off supplemental air flow as vacuum pressure corresponding to complete firing of the engine develops in the intake passage.
