An internal combustion engine includes a main combustion chamber, an auxiliary combustion chamber, a partition wall that separates the main and auxiliary combustion chambers, a first igniter disposed in the auxiliary combustion chamber, a second igniter disposed in the main combustion chamber, and a controller electrically coupled to the first and second igniters. The auxiliary combustion chamber has a capacity smaller than that of the main combustion chamber. The partition wall includes a communication passage. The controller is adapted to send an auxiliary combustion chamber ignition timing signal to the first igniter and is adapted to send a main combustion chamber ignition timing signal to the second igniter. Further, the controller is adapted to send the auxiliary and main combustion chamber ignition timing signals such that, in response to at least one engine operating condition, ignition in the auxiliary combustion chamber occurs after ignition in the main combustion chamber.

Auxiliary combustion chamber type internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine, including a main combustion chamber serving as a main combustion chamber, an auxiliary combustion chamber adjacent to the main combustion chamber and smaller in capacity than the main combustion chamber, and a partition wall between the main combustion chamber and the auxiliary combustion chamber, the partition wall including an injection hole by which the main combustion chamber and the auxiliary combustion chamber communicate. A fuel supply device supplies fuel to the main combustion chamber and the auxiliary combustion chamber. A mixture forming device forms a mixture of air and the supplied fuel in the main combustion chamber, away from the partition wall before ignition. An ignition device ignites the fuel in the auxiliary combustion chamber, propelling an ejecting torch flame into the mixture of air and fuel in the main combustion chamber through the injection hole, thereby burning the mixture of air and fuel in the main combustion chamber.

Internal combustion engine with auxiliary combustion chamber

An internal combustion engine () comprises a fuel injection valve () which supplies a first fuel having a higher self-ignitability than gasoline and a second fuel having a higher combustion speed than gasoline such that an air-fuel mixture containing the first fuel and the second fuel is formed in a combustion chamber (), a spark plug () which ignites the air-fuel mixture, and a programmable controller () programmed to control supply proportions of the first fuel and the second fuel such that the ignited air-fuel mixture undergoes flame propagation combustion and then undergoes self-ignition combustion. Thus, a reduction in emissions can be achieved, and high thermal efficiency can be realized through the self-ignition combustion.

Internal combustion engine

A cylinder direct injection type internal combustion engine, including a fuel injection device configured to directly inject a first octane-value fuel and a second octane-value fuel into a combustion chamber. The second octane-value fuel has an octane value larger than an octane value of the first octane-value fuel. A controller is programmed to perform a first operation mode. In the first operation mode, the first octane-value fuel is injected from the fuel injection device, and the second octane-value fuel is injected from the fuel injection device toward an ignition flame formed by self-ignition combustion of the first octane-value fuel, so as to cause flame propagation and combustion of the second octane-value fuel.

Cylinder direct injection type internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine system, including a primary fuel tank that stores a fuel, a fuel reformer that reforms the fuel from the primary fuel tank, a secondary fuel tank that stores the fuel reformed by the fuel reformer, a fuel injection device that injects the fuel that is selectably supplied from either the primary fuel tank or secondary fuel tank into a combustion chamber, a sensor that detects the quantity of fuel remaining in the secondary fuel tank, and a control device that sets and outputs a load and revolution speed of the engine. The control device is configured to set the engine load and engine revolution speed according to a request output determined based upon an operation performed by an operator. The engine load and engine revolution speed when the quantity of fuel remaining in the secondary fuel tank is more than a predetermined value, are set different than when the quantity of fuel remaining in the secondary fuel tank is less than the predetermined value.

Control device for internal combustion engine

A controller () controls combustion in an internal combustion engine that injects a fuel having high self-ignitability into a cylinder during a compression stroke, in which a premixed gas formed from a fuel having low self-ignitability is compressed within the cylinder, and ignites the premixed gas using the injected fuel as an ignition source. The controller () is programmed to detect any one of a self-ignitability of the fuel forming the premixed gas, a self-ignitability of the fuel serving as the ignition source, and an internal cylinder pressure, and set the other two in accordance with a resulting detection value. Thus, combustion conditions can be controlled appropriately, regardless of the engine operating conditions.

Combustion control of internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine includes neighboring main and auxiliary combustion chambers that are separated by a partition wall including a communicating passage. Ignition of an air/fuel mixture in the auxiliary combustion chamber produces a fuel torch that is jetted into an air/fuel mixture in the main combustion chamber. Under a predetermined operation condition, timing for opening an intake valve is retarded relative to both the timing for closing an exhaust valve and the timing for top dead center of a piston on an exhaust stroke. By retarding the timing for opening the intake valve, residual gas in the auxiliary combustion that is left over from a previous cycle can be reduced.

Internal combustion engine with a precombustion chamber

A spark-ignition type internal combustion engine, including a main tank for storing a to-be-determined fuel having an unknown self-ignition property, an auxiliary tank for accumulating a reference fuel having a known self-ignition property, and a controller. The controller is programmed to supply to a combustion chamber a blended fuel prepared by blending the to-be-determined fuel and the reference fuel at a predetermined ratio, measure a self-ignition property of the blended fuel, and determine the unknown self-ignition property of the to-be-determined fuel based on the measured self-ignition property of the blended fuel, the known self-ignition property of the reference fuel and the ratio of the blended fuel. The controller is also programmed to introduce the to-be-determined fuel after the determination from the main tank to the auxiliary tank, and store the to-be-determined fuel in the auxiliary tank such that the to-be-determined fuel serves as a next reference fuel having a known self-ignition property.

Spark ignition type internal combustion engine

An observation apparatus is provided. An apex angle of a contact prism is inputted by operating an apex angle setting knob of a control panel. A fining angle of the contact prism is inputted by operating a fitting angle setting knob. A control unit determines the amount of correction for astigmatism of a left observation optical system and the amount of correction for astigmatism of a right observation optical system based on a recognized observation magnification and the inputted apex angle. An axial angle for the astigmatism of the left observation optical system and an axial angle for the astigmatism of the right observation optical system are determined based on the inputted fitting angle. Variable cross cylinder lens rotating drive units are controlled to rotate cylinder lenses of each of the right and left observation optical systems, thereby obtaining the determined axial angle and the determined amount of correction.

Observation apparatus

An eye fundus photographing system, wherein a three-dimensional moving picture is photographed and displayed in eye fundus of infrared fluorescent photographing. The photographing system includes an exciter filter for transmitting a specific wavelength region of the illumination light emitted from the light source, an illumination optical system for irradiating the fundus with the illumination light transmitted from the exciter filter, left and right objective lenses for extracting the infrared fluorescent light emitted by an ICG of the eye fundus as a left and right photographing light, a photographing optical system including a barrier filter for transmitting the predetermined infrared wavelength region of the left and right photographic light, infrared TV cameras for photographing this wavelength region with a predetermined frame rate, a synchronizing cable for synchronizing each frame and a displayed three-dimensional moving image obtained by combining a left and right photographic image by the infrared TV camera.

Eye fundus photographing system

An internal combustion engine includes a main combustion chamber and a small auxiliary combustion chamber. The main chamber is formed by a cylinder, the undersurface of a cylinder head, and the crown of a piston. A main ignition unit is disposed in the cylinder head, including a main body and a spark plug. The auxiliary chamber is formed within the main ignition unit. The main and auxiliary chambers are connected via a communication passage. The piston crown includes a cavity. When a fuel injection valve sprays fuel into the cavity on compression stroke, a tumble flow of fuel gas is generated to locally form a relatively rich air-fuel mixture near the communication passage. The air-fuel mixture partly flows into the auxiliary chamber as the piston travels upwardly. The air-fuel mixture in the auxiliary chamber is ignited by the spark plug so that a combustion flame propagates into the main chamber.

A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a variable compression ratio mechanism capable of varying a compression ratio of the engine, a compression ratio setting section that sets a compression ratio to be attained by the variable compression ratio mechanism in accordance with an operating condition of the engine, a knock detecting section that detects a knock occurrence state, an ignition timing learning correcting section that determines a learning correction value of an ignition timing in accordance with the knock occurrence sate, and a compression ratio correcting section that corrects the compression ratio set by the compression ratio setting section in accordance with the learning correction value of the ignition timing. A control method is also provided.

Control apparatus and method for internal combustion engine with variable compression ratio mechanism

An engine having a cylinder, a piston slideably received in the cylinder, a crankshaft connected to the piston, and a multi-link piston crank mechanism. The multi-link piston crank mechanism controls movement of the piston such that an acceleration of the piston at top dead center is less than an acceleration of the piston at bottom dead center. A determining device determines an operating condition of the engine. A combustion mode control device controls the engine to operate at an air-fuel ratio leaner than a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio when the determining device determines that the operating condition of the engine is in a predetermined operating region.

Controlling an engine with a multi link-type piston crank mechanism

A combustion control system for a spark ignition internal combustion engine, is configured to detect engine operating conditions, predict, based on the detected engine operating conditions, an autoignition timing of an end gas and an amount of heat released due to autoignition of the end gas, calculate a knock intensity from the autoignition timing and the amount of heat released due to the autoignition, and control combustion in the engine in such a manner that the knock intensity is lower than or equal to a specified intensity limit.

Combustion control system and method for spark-ignition internal combustion engine

A control apparatus is configured for a hybrid vehicle that can operate highly efficiently in all operating regions. The hybrid vehicle utilizes an internal combustion engine that can be operating using either compression self-ignition combustion or spark ignition combustion. An electronic control unit has a combustion pattern determining section that determines (selects) the combustion method with which to run the internal combustion engine based on the output required by the vehicle. As a result, the internal combustion engine can be operated using the combustion method that is appropriate in view of the required output and unnecessary engine output can be prevented. Thus, a hybrid system that can be operated with high efficiency and at high output in all operating regions can be achieved.
