A seat belt buckle device in which the jumping or roll-over height of a counterweight is decreased allowing the seat belt buckle device to be reduced in size. The seat belt buckle device includes an outer case into which a tongue plate is inserted, a latch member that latches the tongue plate, a slideable release button, and a counterweight that resists sliding of the release button. The counterweight includes a shaft that engages a bearing groove formed in the release button and receives the force that rotates the counterweight due to the sliding of the release button. The rotating shaft has a recessed portion in its outer circumferential surface with this portion being configured to come into contact with the bearing groove of the release button when the release button slides into the outer case.

A diffractive optical element simultaneously realizes a plurality of optical functions and is small in size and excellent in productivity. The diffractive optical element has a multilayer member composed of a plurality of layers each of which is made of an optical material. Adjacent layers of the multilayer member are in contact with each other, and have different refractive indexes from each other. The multilayer member includes boundary faces between the contacted adjacent layers. Uneven patterns that cause transmitted light to undergo desired diffraction are formed on at least two faces of three faces including the boundary faces and outer surfaces of the multilayer member. The uneven patterns formed on different faces have different shapes or sizes in the direction of the layers of the multilayer member.

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for measuring changes in light absorption of a sample optical component. The sample is held in a sample holder in a sample chamber during irradiation by an intense light, usually pulsatile light. Molecules of a gas are introduced into the sample chamber as the sample is irradiated. The molecules can be of a material suspected to become adhered to or absorbed by the sample in a way that causes an undesired change in light absorption by the sample. Changes in light absorption by the sample are preferably measured photoacoustically. The molecules of the gas can be generated by controlled irradiation of a 'source material' with a light (which can be the same as used to irradiate the sample) sufficient to generate such molecules of gas from the source material, and routing the gaseous molecules to the sample as the sample is irradiated.
