There is provided a material for a soft intraocular lens, which has excellent transparency and flexibility, can be inserted from a small incision and has an high refractive index independent on a water content. The material comprises (A) 5-25 % by weight of acrylate containing an aromatic ring, (B) 50-90 % by weight of 2-hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate, and (C) 5-45 % by weight of a (meth)acrylate monomer having the coefficient of water absorption of the homopolymer thereof of not more than 30 % by weight, except for (A) acrylate containing an aromatic ring and (B) 2-hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate.

A water-absorptive soft contact lens material having a high transparency, an excellent flexibility, a high oxygen permeability independent of water content, a high mechanical strength and an adequate hardness, which comprises a copolymer prepared by the polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising an N,N-dialkyl acrylamide or methacrylamide, an N-vinyllactam and a bis(silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate in a specific ratio, and which provides water-absorptive soft contact lenses having excellent properties such as high transparency and high oxygen permeability.

A water-absorptive soft contact lens comprising a polymer prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising, as main components, (A) 25 to 75% by weight of a (meth)acrylamide monomer, (B) 20 to 70% by weight of a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, and (C) 0.01 to 10% by weight of a crosslinkable monomer. The water-absorptive soft contact lens has excellent oxygen permeability and high mechanical strength independent of water content, and is excellent in transparency and shape stability.

An ocular lens material comprising a copolymer prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising, as main components, (A) 15 to 40% by mole of a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, (B) 10 to 50% by mole of a styrenic monomer, (C) 5 to 35% by mole of a hydrophilic monomer, and (D) 0.1 to 20% by mole of a crosslinkable monomer. The ocular lens material is excellent in all of transparency, oxygen permeability, mechanical strength and hardness. An ocular lens material comprising a copolymer prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising, as main components, (A) 15 to 40% by mole of a fluoroalkyl (silicon-containing alkyl) fumarate, (B) 35 to 55% by mole of an N-vinyl lactam, (C) 3 to 30% by mole of at least one of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, and (D) 0.1 to 20% by mole of a crosslinkable monomer. The ocular lens material is excellent in all of transparency, oxygen permeability, mechanical strength and hardness. Further, the material is excellent in hydrophilic property in spite of its low water absorption.

A hard contact lens material comprising a copolymer made of at least two kinds of fumaric acid diester at least one of which is a dialkyl fumarate as main components. The hard contact lens material has high oxygen permeability, transparance and excellent physical properties.

A polymer-type polymerization initiator produced by copolymerizing (A) 40 to 60 mole % of an N-vinyllactam and (B) 60 to 40 mole % of at least one fumarate containing a peroxy group, the peroxy-fumarate (B) being represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R1 is a linear alkyl, branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing not more than 18 carbon atoms, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group containing 6 to 18 carbon atoms; and R2 is a linear alkyl, branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing not more than 13 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group. The peroxy-fumarate (b1) may be used in combination with (b2) at least one diester of fumaric acid selected from the group consisting of alkyl fluoroalkyl fumarate, alkyl silicon-containing-alkyl fumarate, fluoroalkyl silicon-containing-alkyl fumarate, bis(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, and bis(silicon-containing-alkyl) fumarate, a mole ratio of the peroxy-fumarate to the diester of fumaric acid falling within a range of 9 to 1 to 1 to 9.

A polymer-type polymerization initiator produced by copolymerizing (A) 40 to 60 mole % of an N-vinyllactam and (B) 60 to 40 mole % of at least one fumarate containing a peroxy group, the peroxy-fumarate (B) being represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R1 is a linear alkyl, branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing not more than 18 carbon atoms, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group containing 6 to 18 carbon atoms; and R2 is a linear alkyl, branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing not more than 13 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group. The peroxy-fumarate (b1) may be used in combination with (b2) at least one diester of fumaric acid selected from the group consisting of alkyl fluoroalkyl fumarate, alkyl silicon-containing-alkyl fumarate, fluoroalkyl, silicon-containing-alkyl fumarate, bis(fluoroalkyl) fumarate, and bis(silicon-containing-alkyl) fumarate, a mole ratio of the peroxy-fumarate to the diester of fumaric acid falling within a range of 9 to 1 to 1 to 9.

A method for preparing a soft ocular lens, which comprises machining a machinably hard polymer blend body composed essentially of a soft lens material and a hard polymer into an ocular lens shape, and removing the hard polymer from the shaped product.
