The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition for a light-scattering liquid crystal device shown in FIG.containing a polymerizable compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the following general formula (1) as a first component and containing a compound having a negative dielectric anisotropy as a second component, a light-scattering liquid crystal device using the liquid crystal composition, and a smart window using the light-scattering liquid crystal device. A reverse mode type light-scattering liquid crystal device can have excellent transparency when no voltage is applied and a reduced driving voltage by the liquid crystal composition of the present invention.

To provide a liquid crystal display device that has a high off-response speed and a good balance between drive voltage and transmittance, is stable over time, and also has a high voltage holding ratio. A liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal layer containing a polymer network (A) and a liquid crystal composition (B) is disposed between two substrates having an electrode on at least one side thereof and having transparent properties on at least one side thereof, and the loss factor (tan &#x3b4;) (loss modulus/storage modulus) of the liquid crystal layer calculated from the storage modulus (Pa) and the loss modulus (Pa) in a sinusoidal vibration measured with a rheometer at 25&#xb0; C. and at a measurement frequency of 1 Hz ranges from 0.1 to 1.

Liquid crystal display device

The liquid crystal display element includes: two transparent substrates, at least one of the two transparent substrates having an electrode; a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between the two transparent substrates and containing one or two or more liquid crystal compounds; and a copolymer included in the liquid crystal composition, the copolymer being a cured product of a polymerizable composition that contains two or more polymerizable compounds. The polymerizable compounds used include one or two or more polymerizable, photo-alignable compounds (Vn), and the content of the polymerizable composition is 1% by mass or more and less than 40% by mass based on the total weight of the polymerizable composition and the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal display element of the present invention is applicable to various operational modes such as TN, STN, ECB, VA, VA-TN, IPS, FFS, &#x3c0; cell, OCB, and cholesteric liquid crystal modes.

Liquid crystal display element

Provided is an LCD device having excellent high speed responsiveness. This LCD device contains a polymer or a copolymer in a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between two transparent substrates, at least one of which has an electrode, and the content of the polymer or the copolymer is 1% by mass or greater and less than 40% by mass of the total mass of the liquid crystal composition and the polymer or the copolymer. This LCD device can be applied to various operation modes such as TN, STN, ECB, VA, VA-TN, IPS, FFS, a &#x3c0; cell, OCB, and cholesteric liquid crystals.

The composite liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal compound and a polymerizable compound. The liquid crystal compound includes a compound having a biphenyl skeleton including two or three rings, and two or more compounds other than the compound having the biphenyl skeleton. The composition includes polymerizable compound. The ratio of the content (mass) of the one or more compounds selected from the compounds represented by General Formulas (II-a1) and (II-a2) to the compound represented by General Formula (II-b) is 70:30 to 30:70. The total content of the liquid crystal compounds is 65% to 85% by mass, and the total content of the polymerizable compounds is 15% to 35% by mass.

Composite liquid crystal composition, display element and electric field detector

There is provided a liquid crystal composition which enables a significant reduction in crystallization temperature as compared with addition of a homolog while having a similar skeleton structure, which has an excellent compatibility, and which enables an increase in the absolute value of negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;). The liquid crystal composition contains two or more compounds which each have two to four ring structures between two side chains. At least one of the ring structures is a 2,3-difluorobenzene skeleton. The two side chains are bonded to different ring structures. The positions of the 2,3-difluorobenzene skeletons are different from each other, and the number of the ring structures are the same as each other.

Liquid-crystal composition

The liquid crystal light modulator includes a first substrate () and a second substrate () disposed between two polarizers, and a pair of electrode structures (). The substrates include homeotropic alignment films () and (), and at least one of the substrates has a function of aligning C-directors of liquid crystal molecules along one direction. The one direction forms an azimuth angle in the range of 35 to 55 degrees with the direction of the electric field generated by the pair of electrode structures (). A liquid crystal composition layer () contains a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a chiral smectic C phase or a liquid crystal composition that has an achiral smectic C phase and negative dielectric anisotropy. Light transmittance is modulated by the electric field generated by the electrode structures () changing the birefringence index of the liquid crystal composition layer ().

Liquid-crystal optical modulation element

An object of the present invention is to obtain a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition which can suppress dependency of a driving voltage on a temperature by decreasing the driving voltage. To a low-molecular liquid crystal compound, a chiral compound, and a specific acrylate and a polymerizable liquid crystal compound as polymerizable acrylate compounds are added, to prepare a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition. By subjecting the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal composition to ultraviolet exposure while maintaining a desired alignment state to form a polymer chain in a liquid crystal phase, a polymer-stabilized liquid crystal display device containing a low-molecular liquid crystal in a stabilized alignment state is obtained.
