An optical shape sensing device includes an elongated outer body with flexible tubing configured to maneuver through a passage; a multicore optical fiber extending through the elongated outer body, and enabling shape sensing by tracking deformation of the multicore optical fiber along a length of the multicore optical fiber; a termination piece attached to a distal tip of the multicore optical fiber, the termination piece having a distal tip; and a force sensing region integrated with the elongated outer body and configured to enable determining of an axial force exerted on a distal end of the elongated outer body. The shape sensing occurs along the multicore optical fiber to the distal tip of the termination piece.

Autonomous X-ray control for robotic navigation

A system for controlling a robotic tool includes a memory that stores instructions and a processor that executes the instructions. When executed by the processor, the instructions cause the system to perform a process that includes monitoring sequential motion of tissue in a three-dimensional space. The process also includes projecting locations and corresponding times when the tissue will be at projected locations in the three-dimensional space. An identified location of the tissue in the three-dimensional space is identified based on the projected locations. A trajectory of the robotic tool is set to meet the tissue at the identified location at a projected time corresponding to the identified location.

A tissue sensing device for use with an electrosurgical knife is proposed which comprises a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a grip portion there between. The proximal end portion is configured for attachment to a housing of the electrosurgical knife. The distal end portion is configured for movably supporting a blade of the knife. A distal end of an optical fiber is arranged at the distal end portion of the device and a proximal end of the optical fiber is connectable to an optical console, so that optical measurements can be performed at the distal end portion.

A system and method for determining the position of a non-shape-sensed guidewire () and for visualizing the guidewire. The system includes a shape-sensed catheter () having a lumen () that is configured to receive the non-shape-sensed guidewire. A measurement module () is configured to measure a distance that the non-shape-sensed guidewire moves. The measurement module may receive signals from a sensor () associated with a measurement assembly that is configured to receive at least a portion of the non-shape-sensed guidewire and/or the shape-sensed catheter. A location module () is configured to determine a position of the non-shape-sensed guidewire. The system is configured to generate a virtual image () of the guidewire, including a portion of the non-shape-sensed guidewire that does not extend along a shape-sensing optical fiber.

Systems and methods for determining the position of a non-shape-sensed guidewire with a shape-sensed catheter and for visualizing the guidewire

A system for detection of optically anisotropic tissue is provided. The system comprises an optical source, an optical detector, a processing unit and a probe. The probe has a shaft with a longitudinal axis and a front end, and a plurality of optical fibers; wherein an end of each of the optical fibers is arranged at the front end of the shaft, and at least one of the optical fibers is a source optical fiber adapted to transmit optical radiation emitted from the optical source to a tissue adjacent to the front end of the shaft. Another one of the optical fibers is a detector optical fiber adapted to transmit optical radiation reflected from the tissue to the optical detector, so that an optical path through the tissue is defined, wherein the optical paths differ from each other with respect to their spatial orientation, and wherein the optical paths cross each other. The processor is configured to control the optical source to emit optical radiation, to receive a signal generated by the optical detector based on the optical radiation reflected by the tissue, to determine a plurality of optical spectra of the reflected optical radiation based on the received signal, wherein the optical spectra are obtained of the same location from at least two different directions, wherein the measurement of the optical spectra is performed either simultaneously or sequentially, and to compare the plurality of optical spectra, wherein the optical spectra relate to optical radiation of the different optical paths thus allowing the detection of anisotropic tissue using differences between the optical spectra.

The present invention relates to a method for determining a state of tissue sealing during a tissue sealing process. According to the disclosed method, an optical probe beam is used to irradiate a tissue region. A signal indicative of optical scattering in the tissue region is generated from a portion of the optical probe beam that has passed through or been returned by the tissue region. The onset of tissue sealing is indicated by the successive occurrence in time of a turning point and a point of inflection in the optical scattering signal. An energy-based tissue sealing or tissue-cutting device for use in accordance with the method is also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a medical needle which comprises an elongate tube and at least one optical fiber, e.g. two fibers, arranged within the elongate tube, for making optical measurements at the distal end of the needle. The optical fibers(s) has a beveled distal end surface, wherein a plane touching the beveled distal end surface and a longitudinal extension axis of the optical fiber forms a bevel angle which is 30&#xb0;-35&#xb0;. Such needle is advantageous for providing a medical needle which is reliable and long term stable, can be manufactured in low cost using known optical fiber materials, thus allowing it to form part of disposable medical kits. Still, the bevel angle of 30&#xb0;-35&#xb0; provides a needle which is easy to insert and which provides a low tendency to cause tissue sticking. Especially, the elongate tube and the optical fiber end(s) have the same beveled angle within the range 30&#xb0;-35&#xb0;, thus allowing a smooth front surface of the needle.
