Air reactivity, CO.sub.2 and soot index of a carbon product is determined. The air reactivity and CO.sub.2 reactivity of a sample of a carbon product are determined on the basis of the same test of the same sample. Air reactivity is analyzed first and, when such analysis is finished, CO.sub.2 reactivity is automatically analyzed on the same sample. The soot index is determined by collecting and weighing soot dust. A vertical tube furnace includes an inlet for the introduction of gas, and a sample holder which is freely suspended from a weighing device and extends down into the tube furnace. The sample holder is provided with one or more thermocouples for registering temperature of a carbon product.

Method for deciding the reactivity and soot index of carbon products

A ring section furnace device for the calcination of carbon bodies includes a number of serially connected chambers with or without lids on top. Each chamber contains a number of cassettes the walls of which have therein vertical and/or horizontal flue gas channels. A flue gas exhaust system from each chamber leads to a main ring duct. The furnace is fitted with an additional, separately attached ring duct, and each of the chambers is fitted with a recovery device in the form of a lid, manifold, or a similar device with a closeable opening or joining pipe, which allows for exhaust removal of the air used for cooling the cassettes through a pipe connection fitted between the additional ring duct and the recovery device on the chamber.

Device for ring section furnace

An apparatus for the analysis of carbon products enables air reactivity, CO.sub.2 reactivity, soot index and coefficient of thermal expansion of the carbon products to be determined in one analysis operation. The apparatus includes vertical and/or horizontal tube furnaces, each of which is provided with devices for weighing, temperature registration and/or registration dilation. Introduction of gas takes place via one end of each of the tube furnaces. Each of the furnaces is connected to a joint processing unit which checks the various instruments and registers the various instruments and registers and processes the analytical data.

Apparatus for analyzing carbon products

An aluminum electrolysis cell comprises a cathode and a continuous anode disposed above the cathode. The anode is composed of carbon elements which are glued or in some other way connected to one another. Onto the anode, there are added new elements to replace carbon material consumed during the electrolysis process. The anode is divided into sections defined by easily detachable holders or cassettes which are disposed close to one another in a row longitudinally of the cell. The cassettes are each provided at their upper ends with projections designed to be detachably connected to bearer walls or structures along the long sides of the cell.

Carbon losses are reduced in that an operative carbon anode is glued beneath a carbon core in an inert anode top. The operative anode carbon is almost completely consumed. The anode top is then cleaned and a new operative carbon is glued to its underside.

Method of reducing the loss of carbon from anodes when producing

A ring section baking furnace for the indirect heating of shaped bodies or particulate material, particularly for calcination, includes vertical ducts, or channels, in pit walls arranged in groups by means of partition walls under the bottom of the pits. Flue gases are led up and down through these ducts. Combustion chambers are not provided, and the volume thereof otherwise required is incorporated into the pit volume. The ducts in each pit wall lead out over the pit wall into one or more separate rooms which connect, in series, two neighboring groups in this pit wall. A small cover plate is provided over each pit wall. Compared with earlier designs with the same external dimensions, less refractory brick is required, a more even temperature of the calcined material is achieved, the consumption of fuel is reduced and the capacity increased.
