To form internal control paths in an ATM node ( ), &ldquo;half trails&rdquo; (HF) are initially established and subsequently connected to form complete trails (FT). In an ATM node having plural node entities ( ) or device boards connected to a switch core ( ), for each node entity a main control path program ( ) executed by a node main processor () initially forms both a listening half trail and a sending half trail extending from the node main processor and switch core. Separately and independently, i.e., without prior communication with the node main processor, an entity control path program ( ) executed by an entity processor ( ) at each node entity establishes a listening half trail between itself and the switch core. For each node entity, the entity control path program establishes the same VPI/VCI as the listening half trail. The entity processor then receives on its independently established listening half trail (i.e., on the predetermined VPI/VCI) a handshaking request. The handshaking request (HR) includes information indicating what half trail (e.g., what other VPI/VCI) the node entity can use as a sending half trail for sending control cells to node main processor. The node entity then responds to the handshaking request with a response message (RM) sent over the sending half trail. Single stage and multi-stage ATM node embodiments are provided. The entity control path program ( ) is preferably the same for each node entity.

Establishing internal control paths in ATM node

For distributive services in telecommunications networks, and in particular methods for establishing point-to-multipoint connections and multipoint-to-point connections as well as methods of releasing these types of connections. Program distribution to several subscribers uses network resources in common along common call routes. A list of potential program distribution points is created and a running index is associated with each one of the distribution points. Before a connection is set up to a subscriber the list is examined and a distribution point is selected from which a point-to-point connection is set up to the subscriber. The running index is stepped up. The running index of a distribution point is stepped down during release of a connection and is examined with release of a call route section.

Point-to-multipoint connections

User terminals are connected to a telecommunication system. The telecommunication system includes a control system for the control, such as set-up, release and modification, of connections between the user terminals. A large portion of functions are common for control of dynamical as well as semi-permanent connections. Control of a connection can be initiated from any of the user terminals to which the connection relates, or from other user terminals. Control data for the connections can be stored in different types of storage resources in the control system, the different types of storage resources having different degrees of reliability.

A method of dynamic resource allocation in a stratified network structure having a dynamically switched first stratum network and at least a second stratum network underlying the first overlying stratum network. At least a first route in the first stratum is provided with a first relation which points out two access points in the second stratum. A connection between the access points in the second stratum network is established and includes a second number of resources generally referred to as an infrastructure. The infrastructure is finally assigned to the first route.
