A cooling sleeve for an electric machine is provided. The cooling sleeve includes: a cylindrical body having an exterior surface, a first channel formed in the cylindrical body and having a first inlet for receiving a cooling fluid, and a second channel formed in the cylindrical body and having a second inlet for receiving the cooling fluid. The first inlet and the second inlet are formed on the exterior surface at a center along a length of the cylindrical body. A plurality of turbulators are formed in the first channel and the second channel and a cylindrical cover is configured to be disposed over the cylindrical body.

Cooling a high-power electric machine

A vehicle includes a vehicle body, a vehicle power source, and an actuator. The vehicle power source includes a housing and a power generator. The housing is rotationally mounted on the vehicle body and is configured to rotate, relative to the vehicle body, about a first rotational axis. The power generator is rotationally mounted within the housing and is configured to rotate about a second rotational axis and generate power. The first rotational axis and the second rotational axis are orthogonally disposed. The actuator is coupled to the housing and is operable to selectively rotate the housing about the first rotational axis. By gimballing the rotating mass of the power source a gyroscopic torque can be applied to the vehicle improving its maneuverability.

A method for generating electrical power may include the steps of rotating a rotor of a generator at a speed in excess of about 12,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) to about 25,000 rpm and producing power with the generator at a rate in excess of about 800 kilowatts (kW). The generator has a power/weight ratio no smaller than about 3 kW/lbs. A rotor is cooled with cooling oil internally circulated through the rotor of the generator so that contact of cooling oil with external surfaces of the rotor may be precluded. The stator is also cooled with oil that is prevented from contacting the external surfaces of the rotor. Pressurized airflow may be produced in a gap between the rotor and a stator of the generator to preclude entry of cooling oil into the gap.

A turbocharger system can include a housing that includes a bore defined at least in part by a bore wall; a rolling element bearing unit that includes an outer race; and a mixed-element damper assembly disposed at least in part between the outer race and the bore wall where the mixed-element damper assembly includes a lobed-spring element and a squeeze film damper element.

In an embodiment, and by way of example only, a vibration isolator is used for coupling between a payload and a base and includes a rod, a magnetic damper, a first spring, and a second spring. The magnetic damper includes a movable section and stationary section. The movable section comprises a conductive material and has an opening through which the rod extends. The stationary section includes a magnet disposed around and spaced apart from the movable section and is coupled to the base. The first spring couples the movable section to the rod. The second spring is coupled to the rod and stationary section. In another embodiment, the vibration isolator also includes a voice coil actuation system.

A tuned mass damper is provided for use with a structure that vibrates at a first axial surge mode and a second axial surge mode, when exposed to a predetermined frequency range. The tuned mass damper includes a housing, an endcap, two masses, and two springs. The first and second masses are disposed in a housing cavity. The first tuned mass damper spring is disposed in the cavity coupling the first mass and the endcap. The second tuned mass damper spring is disposed in the cavity coupling the first and second masses. The tuned mass damper has first and second resonant frequencies in the predetermined frequency range to damp the first and second axial surge modes, respectively. The second mass resonates at an amplitude that is greater than an amplitude at which the first mass resonates, when the two masses are subjected to the second axial surge mode.

A vibration isolation apparatus is provided that includes a main spring and a tuned mass damper. The main spring has a first end and a second end, and is configured to resonate when vibrated within a predetermined frequency range with a first axial surge mode having a magnitude. The tuned mass damper is coupled to the main spring at a first axial position located substantially equidistantly between the main spring first end and the main spring second end and is configured to reduce the first axial surge mode magnitude at least 50% when the main spring is vibrated within the predetermined frequency range. Methods of manufacturing the vibration isolation apparatus are also provided.

A vibration reduction system is provided for use in conjunction with a rotational device including a stationary body, a rotating body, and a first bearing assembly disposed between the stationary body and the rotating body. The vibration reduction system includes a first plurality of bearing mount actuators residing between the stationary body and the first bearing assembly. The first plurality of bearing mount actuators is configured to adjust the radial position of the first bearing assembly. The vibration reduction system further includes a vibration sensor, which is coupled to the stationary body, and a controller, which is coupled to the vibration sensor and to the first plurality of bearing mount actuators. The controller is configured to reduce vibrations sensed by the vibration sensor by selectively adjusting the radial position of the first bearing assembly utilizing the first plurality of bearing mount actuators.

A user interface linkage system includes first and second user interfaces that are linked by a single hydraulic circuit. The system is configured to provide compensation for relatively slow changes in hydraulic fluid pressure due, for example, to temperature variations. The system is also configured to allow the user interfaces to be selectively unlinked from each other.

An apparatus and method for selecting an appropriate viscous fluid for use in control moment gyroscopes, reaction wheels, momentum wheels and the like. Components such as the housing, the rotor, and the viscous fluid are modeled using a three-parameter isolator system, which allows optimization of the damping action for a given application.

Methods and apparatus for tuned axial damping in rotating machinery with floating bearing cartridge

Methods and apparatus are provided for locking and releasing ends of a support strut coupled between a mounting platform and a load. In a preferred embodiment, the strut comprises a damping section coupled between the ends and having a gap therein when the strut is unlocked, a locking section coupled between the ends for closing the gap by applying stress to a portion of the damper section through a force transmitting member, and a releasing section coupled in parallel with part of the force transmitting member, the releasing section including a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) and heater therefore. Heating the SMA relieves the stress and opens the gap. Release from the locked condition occurs gradually and without fracture or sudden shock and the heater can be actuated remotely. In a preferred embodiment, a worm drive turnbuckle arrangement is used to apply force to lock the strut.
