The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool for metal machining with a from about 2.0 to about 20 &#x3bc;m thick PVD coating, having both the wear resistance of a coating of homogeneous layers and the toughness of a multilayer coating, comprising a first (Me,Me)(C,N,O) layer where Meis one or more of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI, Al and Si and Meis one of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI from about 1.0 to about 4.5 &#x3bc;m thick, a second (Me,Me)(C,N) layer where Meis one or more of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI, Al and Si and Meis one of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI and Y, from about 0.5 to about 4.5 &#x3bc;m thick, and in between the first and the second layer, an (Me, Me)(C,N,O) layer where Meis one or more of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI, Al and Si and Meis one of the elements in the transition metal group IV-VI and Y, from about 0.1 to about 1.0 &#x3bc;m thick, where the thickness of the in between layer is less than about 0.5 times the thickness of thinnest of the first and the second layer and the layers in between has a composition differing from the first and the second layer, and a method of making thereof.

Coated cutting tool

A cutting tool includes a substrate on which at least on the functioning parts of the surface thereof a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating is applied, wherein the coating includes a laminated multilayer of alternating PVD or PECVD metal oxide layers, MeX+MeX+MeX+MeX . . . , where at least one of MeX and MeX is a metal oxide+metal oxide nano-composite layer composed of two components with different composition and different structure which components include a single phase oxide of one metal element or a solid solution of two or more metal oxides, wherein the layers MeX and MeX are different in composition or structure and have individual layer thicknesses larger than about 0.4 nm but smaller than about 50 nm and where said laminated multilayer layer has a total thickness of between about 0.2 and about 20 &#x3bc;m.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool comprising a substrate and, a wear resistant coating, said wear resistant coating is composed of one or more layers of refractory compounds of which at least one layer consists of a multilayered MX/LX/MX/LX laminar structure where the alternating layers MX and LX are carbides or nitrides with the elements M and L selected from the group consisting of Ti, Nb, Hf, V, Ta, Mo, Zr, Cr, Al, Si or W and mixtures thereof, wherein the sequence of individual layer thicknesses has no repeat period but essentially aperiodic throughout the entire multilayered structure, and where the individual MX and LX layer thickness is larger than 0.1 ran but the sum of any 10 consecutive layers in the structure is smaller than 300 nm, and the total thickness of said multilayered structure is larger than 0.5 &#x3bc;m but smaller than 20 &#x3bc;m, deposited by PVD-technique, where at least one of MX or LX are electrically isolating, and a method of making such a cutting tool.

Cutting tool with wear resistant coating and method of making the same

A method of making a cutting tool, the cutting tool having a WC&#x2014;Co based cemented carbide body and a multi-layer coating, the method including: applying a first innermost bonding layer TiN to the body; applying a second layer in the form of a mutlilayered structure having sublayers of (TiAl)N were x varies according to 0.45&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.55 and 0.70&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.80; applying a third layer of (TiAl)N where x is 0.45&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.55; and applying a forth outermost layer on TiN.

Method of making grooving or parting insert

The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool (e.g.&#x2014;cemented carbide insert) useful for grooving or parting of steel or stainless steel components such as tubes and bars. The insert is characterised by a WC-Co-based cemented carbide substrate having a highly W-alloyed Co-binder phase and a hard and wear resistant coating including a multilayered structure of sublayers of the composition (TiAl)N with a periodic and repeated variation of the Ti/Al ratio.

Coated grooving or parting insert and method of making same

The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool insert useful for grooving or severing steel components such as steel or stainless steel tubes and bars. The insert is characterized by WC&#x2014;Co-based cemented carbide substrate having a highly W-alloyed Co-binder phase and a relatively thin coating including an inner layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains followed by a layer of fine grained &#x3ba;&#x2014;AlOand a top layer of TiN.

Coated grooving or parting insert

The present invention relates to a cutting tool comprising a body of sintered cemented carbide or cermet, ceramic or high speed steel on which at least one of the functioning parts of the surface of the body, a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating is applied. The coating comprises a laminar, multilayered structure of refractory compounds in polycrystalline, non-repetitive form, MX/NX/MX/NX where the alternating layers MX and NX are metal nitrides or carbides with the metal elements M and N selected from the group consisting of Ti, Nb, Hf, V, Ta, Mo, Zr, Cr, Al and W. The sequence of individual layer thicknesses is essentially aperiodic throughout the entire multilayered structure, and layer thicknesses are larger than 0.1 nanometer but smaller than 30 nanometer, preferably smaller than 20 nanometer. The total thickness of said multilayered coating is larger than 0.5 .mu.m but smaller than 20 .mu.m.

Multilayered coated cutting tool

A multilayer coated cutting tool comprising a cemented carbide body with at least one sintered-on inlay containing polycrystalline cubic boron nitride forming at least one cutting edge. Reduced crater wear of the rake face of the tool is achieved by reducing chemical interaction between tool and workpiece/chip material, and used edges of indexable inserts can be readily identified. The tool is provided with a multilayer coating by thermal CVD, the coating including (1) a first, innermost, layer of TiC.sub.x N.sub.y O.sub.z with x+y+z=1, with y&gt;x and z&lt;0.2, with equiaxed grains with size &lt;0.5 .mu.m and a total thickness &lt;1.5 .mu.m, (2) a second layer of TiC.sub.x N.sub.y O.sub.z with x+y+z=1, preferably with z=0, x&gt;0.3, most preferably x&gt;0.5, having a thickness of 1-8 .mu.m, with columnar grains, and (3) a third layer of a smooth, fine-grained (grain size about 1 .mu.m) layer of (.alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or .kappa.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or mixtures thereof, with a thickness of 2-10 .mu.m.
