A controller includes a sampling module that samples a signal indicative of the output voltage, a filter module that filters out a ripple component of a sampled signal to generate a filtered signal, and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller that generates a duty cycle control signal. The PID controller includes a first component that scales sample values of the filtered signal to generate a first component signal, a down-sampling module that generates a down-sampled signal, and a storage module that stores a value of the down-sampled signal. The PID controller also includes a second component that generates a second component signal as a product of a factor and a difference signal between each sample value in the filtered signal and stored value, a third component that scales and accumulates the down-sampled signal to generate a third component signal, and a summing module that sums the first, second and third component signals.

Switched mode power supply compensation loop

A controller, and related method, configured to generate a duty cycle control signal for controlling an output voltage of a switched mode power supply as a function of a reference signal. In one embodiment, the controller is configured to sample a signal indicative of the output voltage to generate a first sampled signal, filter out a ripple component of the first sampled signal to generate a filtered signal, and generate a feedback control signal based on the filtered signal. The controller is also configured to sample a signal indicative of an input voltage of the switched mode power supply to generate a second sampled signal, generate a feed-forward control signal based on the second sampled signal and a feed-forward reference voltage, and generate the duty cycle control signal based on the feedback control signal and the feed-forward control signal.

An apparatus for a power system with a power input at an upstream end and power outputs connected to loads in a downstream end, the power system comprising a plurality of devices interconnected in a tree topology. The apparatus communicatively coupled to each of the devices and configured to identify each of the devices, cause a change of an operation state or parameter of each of the devices at a time. The apparatus further configured to determine, for each of the devices having an operation state or parameter thereof changed, which of the other devices having a related change of an operation state or parameter thereof, and identify how the devices are connected in the tree topology based on said determined other devices having a related change of an operation state or parameter thereof, for each of said devices having an operation state or parameter thereof changed.

Apparatus, power system, computer program, and method

A controller () for determining a distribution of switching phases among switching elements of a power supply system The power supply system has a plurality of voltage converters, each comprising a switching element and being arranged to convert an input voltage supplied to the voltage converters to a respective output voltage by switching the switching element at a predetermined frequency. The controller () comprises a receiver () for receiving one or more signals indicative of a respective contribution from each of the voltage converters to a ripple current component of an input current of the voltage converters, and a rank determining module () configured to rank the voltage converters in order of decreasing contribution to the ripple current. The controller () further comprises a switching phase offset calculator () configured to calculate a respective switching phase offset that is to be applied for the switching element in each of the voltage converters by: (i) calculating respective phase offsets of the two highest ranked voltage converters that would minimize an input current ripple caused only by said two highest ranked voltage converters; (ii) calculating a phase offset of the next-highest ranked voltage converter that would minimize an input current ripple caused only by said next-highest ranked voltage converter and the voltage converters ranked higher than said next-highest voltage converter; and (iii) repeating step (ii) for each subsequent voltage converter in the ranking. The controller () also includes an output signal generator () configured to generate one or more output signals defining the calculated switching phase offsets to be applied to the switching of the respective switching elements.

Determination of phase offsets in a power supply system having multiple switching converters

A controller for determining switching phases among switching elements of a power supply system having voltage converters, each comprising a switching element. The controller receives signals indicative of a contribution from each converter to a ripple voltage component of an input current of the converters, and ranks the converters. The controller calculates a switching phase offset that is to be applied for the switching element by: (i) calculating phase offsets of two highest ranked converters that would minimize an input voltage ripple caused by said two highest ranked converters, (ii) calculating a phase offset of a next-highest ranked converter that would minimize an input voltage ripple caused by said next-highest ranked converter and converters ranked higher than said next-highest converter; and (iii) repeating step (ii) for each converter in the ranking. The controller generates output signals defining the calculated switching phase offsets to be applied to the switching elements.

A voltage converter () is disclosed, which comprises a controller () operable in: a first mode to control the voltage converter so as to convert an input voltage (V) at an input () of the voltage converter to an output voltage (V) at an output () of the voltage converter; and a second mode, in which the controller () is configurable by configuration control signals () so as to change the control applied by the controller to the voltage converter. The voltage converter () also includes a power module () arranged to derive and supply an operation voltage (V) to the controller (), the power module () being arranged to derive the operation voltage from the input voltage (V) during operation of the controller () in the first mode, and a voltage source () other than the input voltage (V) during operation of the controller () in the second mode. Programmable voltage converter

A voltage controller () operable to generate control signals for controlling an intermediate bus voltage (V) in an intermediate bus architecture power system (), the intermediate bus voltage comprising a voltage output from a first stage DC/DC power converter () to at least one second stage DC/DC power converter (-to-K). The voltage controller () comprises a receiver operable to receive at least one of voltage and current values input to the first stage DC/DC power converter (). The voltage controller () further comprises a efficiency measuring unit operable to determine a measure of the efficiency of the intermediate bus architecture power system in accordance with the received values, and a control signal generator operable to generate control signals in dependence upon the determined efficiency measure to cause the first stage DC/DC converter () to set the intermediate bus voltage (V).

Intermediate bus architecture power supply controller

In an intermediate bus architecture power system, a voltage controller that generates control signals for controlling an intermediate bus voltage (V) output from a first stage DC-to-DC power converter to at least one second stage DC-to-DC power converter via the intermediate voltage bus. A receiver receives values of the current input to the first stage converter, or the current and voltage output by the first stage converter. The controller determines a first value of an efficiency measure using the received values corresponding to a first V, and determines a second value of the efficiency measure for a second Vhigher than the first V. Control signals cause the first stage converter to set the Vto a voltage higher than the second Vif the second efficiency measure value represents a higher system efficiency than the first efficiency measure value, and to a voltage lower than the first Vif the second efficiency measure value represents a lower system efficiency than the first efficiency measure value.

A method of determining a measure of a total capacitance of one or more capacitive elements connected to an output of a switched mode power supply is described. The method includes generating a voltage control signal to cause an output voltage controller to sweep a voltage at the output of the switched mode power supply from an initial voltage value to a final voltage value. Sample values of a current at the output measured by a current sampler during the sweep of the output voltage are received, and an integrated current value representing a measure of the total capacitance using the received sample values is calculated.

Capacitance determination in a switched mode power supply

A method of determining a current in a switched mode power supply. The method comprises: storing values representing at least one pre-calculated matrix A; receiving measured current values; and using the stored values representing the matrix A and the received current values to calculate a respective initial value for each of the coefficients of the line and for each measured current value: calculating an estimated current using the equation of the line and the calculated initial values of the coefficients; determining a difference between the measured current value and the estimated current value to generate a difference value, and comparing the difference value against a threshold and, if the difference value is greater than the threshold, calculating updated values of the coefficients using stored values representing matrix A and difference value. A value for the current in the switched mode power supply is determined using the updated values of the coefficients
