A speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission is controlled by varying the effective diameters of drive and driven pulleys mounted respectively on input and output shafts with a V-belt trained around the drive and driven pulleys. A belt-and-pulley continuously variable transmission comprises a driver pulley mounted on an input shaft and comprising a fixed conical member and a movable conical member, a driven pulley mounted on an output shaft and comprising a fixed conical member and a movable conical member, and a V-belt trained around the driver and driven pulleys. The movable conical members are axially movable to vary the effective diameters of the driver and driven pulleys for controlling the transmission ratio. The movable conical members are disposed on opposite sides of the V-belt. The transmission further includes a main servomechanism operatively coupled to the movable conical members for controlling axial movement of the movable conical members. As a feature of the servomechanism control, the transmission includes a first servomechanism for producing a prescribed amount of movement in a prescribed direction based on a prescribed signal, and a second servomechanism operatively connected to the first servomechanism and one of the driver and driven pulleys for applying the prescribed amount of movement produced by the first servomechanism to said one pulley.

Belt-and-pulley type continuously variable transmission

In a power transmitting V-belt comprising an endless metal band mounted on a multiplicity of V-shaped metal blocks linked so that a semi-cylindrical recess provided on one metal block of each adjacent pair of V-shaped metal blocks is engaged by a semi cylindrical projection, such as a roller, associated with the other metal block of the adjacent pair to pivotally link the adjacent blocks. A relief portion having a suitable length is provided at an axially central portion of the recess to be recessed more deeply than the remainder of the recess. This allows uniform contact and satisfactory lubrication between the projection and the recess without interference from the central portion.

A power transmitting V-belt comprising an endless metal band held by stopper members on a multiplicity of V-shaped metal blocks which are linked to one another, wherein a pair of free ends of each stopper member are retained in a pair of retaining grooves on the associated metal block, which pair of retaining grooves include a tapered guide section adapted to guide the free ends of the stopper member from its free state to its stressed state retained in the retaining grooves at the time of mounting the stopper member to the metal block. The V belt further comprises a plurality of rollers (4) each respectively disposed between neighboring two of the V-shaped blocks; the V-shaped blocks include a number of V-shaped blocks (3x, 3y) falling into at least two types having their minimum longitudinal thicknesses (l.sub.2, l.sub.3) different from each other; and V-shaped blocks (3y) of at least either type each have a marking (3i, 3j; 3k) visually identifiable from outside of the V belt. The V belt (201) further includes a plurality of rollers (4) disposed between the V-shaped blocks, respectively, and the V-shaped blocks (3, 203) include a number of V-shaped blocks (203) of another type each having at either side of the V belt a convex part (203e) playing the role of a roller.

V belt for power transmission

A power transmission V belt for being trained around driver and driven pulleys for transmitting power therebetween includes a loop-shaped metallic belt and a plurality of metallic V blocks mounted on the metallic belt successively in the longitudinal direction thereof. A a self-lubricating, heat-resistant, wear-resistant hard layer is coated on at least one of a radially inward surface and opposite side surfaces of the metallic belt, and radially outward surface and opposite side surfaces of the V blocks. Disclosed is an improved laminated metallic belt consisting of at least two layers of an endless metallic band for use in a torque transmission device, which can transmit torque between two pulleys having variable effective radii, in combination with a plurality of metallic blocks which have surfaces contacting the innermost layer of the laminated metallic belt and are arranged along the laminated metallic belt. The metallic belt according to the present invention may be made of precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel or maraging steel which have favorable properties as to toughness, mechanical strength and the adaptability for welding required for making an endless laminated metallic belt, but lack the surface hardness to ensure relatively favorable durability. The durability of the steel is improved according to the present invention by a nitride layer and/or an electroless nickel plating layer formed on the side edges of the endless metallic band. Optionally, the innermost and/or the outermost surface of the laminated metallic belt may be hardened in a similar manner.

A vehicular speed change gear wherein a stepless V-belt transmission and a stepped gear transmission are disposed in series in a power transmission system connecting an engine crankshaft and a driving wheel together. An automatic speed change actuator, which automatically actuates the speed change operation of the stepless transmission in association with an engine throttle valve opening and a vehicle speed is connected to the stepless transmission, and a manual speed change actuator is connected to the stepped transmission for manually actuating the speed change operation of the latter. With these arrangements, the range of transmission ratio of the stepless V-belt transmission is set in a domain relatively high in transmission efficiency, and a shortage involved thereby of the transmission ratio is compensated with the range of transmission ratio of the stepped gear transmission, whereby a satisfactorily wide overall range of transmission ratio is thus obtainable without deteriorating the longevity of a V-belt, a high transmission efficiency is secured at all times as well, and a kickdown operation can be effected quickly.
