The hydrocarbon wells include a radioactive tracer system, a production conduit, a lift gas supply conduit, a lift gas supply system configured to provide a lift gas stream to the lift gas supply conduit, and one or more gas lift valves each being configured to selectively permit lift gas to enter the production conduit and mix with reservoir liquid therein to generate a produced fluid stream. The radioactive tracer system is configured to inject a radioactive tracer into the lift gas stream and to detect the radioactive tracer within the produced fluid stream. The methods include injecting the radioactive tracer into the lift gas stream, flowing the radioactive tracer through an open gas lift valve into the production conduit, mixing the radioactive tracer with the reservoir liquid to generate a tracer-marked liquid band within the produced fluid stream, and detecting radiation from the tracer-marked liquid band.

Systems and a method are provided for protecting a gas lift valve (GLV) from erosion. An example system includes a gas lift valve that includes an unloading protection orifice, and wherein the unloading protection orifice unloading protection orifice includes a different open area than a valve seat in the gas lift valve.

Protecting gas lift valves from erosion

A method of operating a reciprocating system including a rod pump for pumping liquids from a wellbore. The method includes determining rod position of the rod pump using a wave-based technology detector, the rod pump comprising a rod string carrying a down hole pump and a drive system including a drive motor coupled to the rod string through a transmission unit; communicating rod position to a data acquisition system receiving one or more other measurements of rod pump operation to determine rod pump performance; and adjusting at least one operating parameter to enhance rod pump performance. A method of determining operating parameters and optimizing performance of an oil or gas production rod pump, and a system for determining rod position of an oil or gas production rod pump are also provided.

Rod pump position measurement employing wave-based technologies

Hydrocarbon wells and methods of interrogating fluid flow within hydrocarbon wells. The hydrocarbon wells include a wellbore and downhole tubing that defines a tubing conduit and extends within the wellbore. The hydrocarbon wells also include an interrogation device. The interrogation device is configured to indicate at least one property of fluid flow within the hydrocarbon wells. The hydrocarbon wells also include a downhole location at which the interrogation device is released into the tubing conduit and a detection structure configured to query the interrogation device to determine the at least one property of fluid flow within the hydrocarbon wells. The methods include releasing an interrogation device at a downhole location within a hydrocarbon well and flowing the interrogation device from the downhole location to a surface region. The methods also include querying the interrogation device to determine at least one property of fluid flow within the hydrocarbon well.

Hydrocarbon wells and methods of interrogating fluid flow within hydrocarbon wells

A method of identifying and diagnosing open gas lift valves in a gas lift production well, the gas lift production well including a production tubular having a plurality of mechanical gas lift valves, and a casing surrounding a portion of the tubular to form an annulus. The method includes reducing injection pressure below the minimum design opening pressure of each of the plurality of mechanical gas lift valves to close each of the plurality of mechanical gas lift valves; incrementally increasing injection pressure to operating or designed injection pressure to sequentially open one or more of the plurality of mechanical gas lift valves; measuring pressure, amplitude, frequency and/or wave patterns produced by the sequential opening of the one or more mechanical gas lift valves; and determining the location of the one or more mechanical gas lift valve locations.

Acoustic pressure wave gas lift diagnostics

A side pocket mandrel, including defining a tubular body having opposing ends and a bore formed within the tubular body. The tubular body comprises an eccentric portion such that a first inner diameter (ID) is formed at the opposing upper and lower ends, and a second larger inner diameter (ID) is formed along an eccentric portion. The mandrel includes a movable curtain disposed along the eccentric portion, wherein in a first position the movable curtain covers a portion of the eccentric portion above the pocket to provide a reduced inner diameter that approximates (ID), and in a second position the curtain is movable to a larger inner diameter (ID) that enables access by a kick-over tool to install a gas lift valve in or to retrieve the gas lift from the pocket. A method of producing hydrocarbon fluids is also provided.

Side pocket mandrel for plunger lift

Evaluating annulus-tubing communication points in a production well having an annulus between a production string and a surrounding string(s) of casing. Determining a composition of production fluids produced from the well, and injecting one or more tracer materials into the annulus of the well under pressure as part of a lift gas. Each of the one or more tracer materials defines a material that is not native to the production fluids, and each has a different rate of diffusivity in the lift gas. The tracer materials are detected upon being produced at the surface. A mass spectrometer or other analyzer capable of detecting tracer materials at concentrations of less than 1,000 ppm is used. Determining injection points of the one or more tracer materials, and determining whether each of the injection points represents a gas lift valve along the production tubing.

Method for monitoring gas lift wells using minimal concentration tracer materials

A method of optimizing the operation of a gas lift well including the steps of: collecting data from at least one surface mounted sensor, the at least one surface mounted sensor including a skin-mounted temperature sensor, the at least one surface mounted sensor mounted to the gas lift well's surface equipment; collecting ambient temperature data; and determining gas lift performance from data so obtained. A system and field test kits for optimizing the operation of a gas lift well.
