Method to control a clutch device within a transmission selectively coupling an internal combustion engine to a driveline includes controlling slip of the clutch device in response to an engine autostart event. Controlling slip includes adjusting a commanded fill pressure to the clutch device to a first predetermined magnitude that exceeds a pressure threshold until the clutch device is filled, decreasing the commanded fill pressure from the first predetermined magnitude to a second predetermined magnitude below the pressure threshold, and adjusting the commanded fill pressure in accordance with a first ramping profile and in accordance with a subsequent second ramping profile when a transmission input speed achieves a desired first transmission input speed.

Driveline clutch variable clutch capacity reapply, shaping and lash management

A control system for evaluating a brake booster system includes an engine evaluation module that detects an engine off condition. A pressure evaluation module, during the engine off condition, monitors hydraulic brake line pressure, detects a change in brake booster pressure, and determines a brake booster vacuum decay rate based on the change in brake booster pressure. A fault reporting module detects a brake booster system fault based on the brake line pressure and the brake booster vacuum decay rate.

A control method for an engine of a vehicle includes generating a brake value indicative of an operating condition of a brake system of the vehicle, and selectively adjusting one of a fuel control value of the engine and a fuel adjustment diagnostic value for the engine based on the brake value. In the method, a mass of fuel delivered to the engine is based on the fuel control value, and a diagnostic result indicative of lean operation of the engine is based on the fuel adjustment diagnostic value. The brake operating condition is selected from a group including a state of operation, a pedal displacement, an actuation period, a fluid operating pressure, and a power assist pressure. A leak diagnostic system for a vehicle comprises a calculation module and a diagnostic enabling module. The calculation module calculates a decay rate of a brake booster vacuum. The diagnostic enabling module selectively enables the decay rate calculation based on mass airflow (MAF) into an engine and engine vacuum.

The method of the present invention provides a variety of vehicle performance characteristics depending on the mode of operation. A first routine is initiated to provide an optimal balance of powertrain responsiveness and fuel economy for any given combination of vehicle speed and deceleration rate. The first routine may, according to a preferred embodiment, include a plurality of routines that are each configured to provide an optimal balance of powertrain responsiveness and fuel economy within a predefined range of vehicle speeds and deceleration rates. A second routine is initiated if said deceleration rate is within a predefined range. The second routine includes running the electric motor/generator while the hybrid vehicle is being stopped in order to control the driveline lash and thereby minimize disturbances during a subsequent engine re-start.

Method for hybrid vehicle powertrain control

An anti-rollback vehicle control system reduces vehicle rollback by restarting an engine based on a grade, a brake signal, and a calculated brake release rate. In a hybrid vehicle, the control system restarts the vehicle engine and electric motor. In a conventional powertrain vehicle that utilizes a transmission with a neutral-idle mode, the control system directs the transmission to exit neutral-idle mode. The grade may be estimated based on a vehicle acceleration rate, a vehicle driving force, and resistance factors.

Anti-rollback control for hybrid and conventional powertrain vehicles

A fuel delivery control system includes a vehicle speed sensor that generates a vehicle speed signal and an engine rotational speed sensor that generates an engine rotational speed signal. A control module calculates at least one of an accelerator release delay period and a brake depression delay period based on the vehicle speed signal and the engine rotational speed signal and deactivates fuel delivery to said engine after waiting at least one of the accelerator release delay period after the accelerator pedal is released and the brake depression delay period after the brake pedal is depressed.

A hybrid vehicle includes an engine having at least one cylinder and an electric machine that drives the engine during a start-up period. A control module monitors a rotational speed of the engine and regulates torque generated by the electric machine based on the rotational speed during the start-up period and a maximum discharge power available to power the electric machine.

Methods are provided for controlling the fueling of a motor vehicle and specifically for controlling the cut off of fueling of a hybrid electric motor vehicle during deceleration of that motor vehicle. In a hybrid electric motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine, a motor/generator, and a continuously variable transmission, one embodiment of the method comprises the steps of sensing throttle position of the internal combustion engine and slewing the continuously variable transmission to a higher gear ratio in response to sensing a closed throttle position. The method further comprises the steps of cutting fueling of the internal combustion engine during the deceleration, and coupling the motor/generator in parallel with the internal combustion engine with the motor/generator operating as a generator.

CVT hybrid powertrain fueling and engine stop-start control method

A dual voltage tandem engine start system provides a method for high rotational speed, low emissions, heat-engine start-ups in a hybrid electric vehicle. The system also provides a reliable backup system that can be jumpstarted in an emergency should part of the vehicle's electrical system fail. At start-up, a conventional low voltage starter motor (typically 12-volt) begins turning the heat engine up to a predetermined initial engine RPM. When this RPM is reached, a higher voltage motor/generator, in tandem with the low voltage starter motor, also begins turning the heat engine. Once a second, predetermined heat engine RPM is reached, the low voltage starter motor stops turning the engine, leaving the motor/generator to turn the heat engine to a final engine RPM where it begins fueling and combustion starts. This final engine RPM is sufficiently high to allow a low engine emission start once fueling begins.

A method is directed to controlling idle speed for an internal combustion engine. The method provides for monitoring a plurality of vehicle system signal inputs, determining a baseline load control signal based on the vehicle system signal inputs, determining a maximum load control signal based on the vehicle system signal inputs, determining an anticipated load control signal based on the vehicle system signal inputs, determining an idle speed control signal based on the baseline control signal and the anticipated control signal, modifying the idle speed control signal based on vehicle system signal inputs, and controlling the idle speed based on the modified idle speed control signal.

Apparatus and method for controlling a hybrid vehicle

A method of controlling engine crankshaft motion in a hybrid electric drive system having an internal combustion engine and a motor-generator operatively connected to a crankshaft of the engine is disclosed. The steps include monitoring the crankshaft position, forecasting a crankshaft stall position; comparing the forecast stall position with a target range; and if the forecast crankshaft stall position is outside the target range, operating the motor-generator to modify the forecast stall position to be within the target range. These steps properly position the crankshaft for re-initiating engine start-up. The method further includes the steps of calculating an effective lube interval time once the crankshaft speed is zero; comparing the effective lube interval time to a critical time; and if the effective lube interval time is greater than the critical time, pulsing the motor-generator to rock the crankshaft for a pulse time to redistribute a lubricant film.
