A thin film heater includes a flexible heating element and a flexible electrically insulating backing film supporting the heating element; wherein the backing film includes one or both of a fluoropolymer or Polyetheretherketone. By using a fluoropolymer or Polyetheretherketone, improved dielectric and mechanical properties are provided, which are particularly suited to application in an aerosol generating device. A method of fabricating a thin film heater is also provided.

A vapor-generating system includes a cartridge including a first vapor-forming substrate, the cartridge having an annular shape and at least one end configured to abut a flange and at least partially cover a device air inlet, and a vapor-generating device having an outer surface that defines the flange, the vapor-generating device being configured to be overlain by the cartridge such that the cartridge is coupled against the flange, the vapor-generating device including a liquid storage section containing a second vapor-forming substrate, the second vapor-forming substrate being a liquid substrate, and a power supply section, the liquid storage section being configured to removably attach to the power supply section such that at least one of the flange and the device air inlet are defined by outer surfaces of the liquid storage section and the power supply section.

Vapor-generating system having an external cartridge

A customizable device may include a first inhalation device and a second inhalation device, each including a mouth end portion and an upstream end portion. In a storage configuration, the mouth end portion of at least one of the first inhalation device or the second inhalation device is removably coupled to the other inhalation device. In an active configuration, the upstream end portion of at least one of the first inhalation device or the second inhalation device is removably coupled to the other inhalation device. A connector hub may couple the inhalation devices.

At least one cartridge of the plurality of cartridges includes a first aerosol-forming substrate, the plurality of cartridges are configured for selective connection to each other to form a cartridge assembly. The aerosol-generating device includes a storage including a second aerosol-forming substrate in the storage, an electric heater configured to heat a portion of the second aerosol-forming substrate from the storage section during use of the aerosol-generating system, and a power supply housing, the power supply housing including a power supply and a controller, the controller configured to control a supply of electrical power from the power supply to the electric heater, the aerosol-generating device being configured to receive the cartridge assembly at a downstream end of the aerosol-generating device.

An aerosol-generating device includes at least one electric heater and a first power supply configured to supply electrical energy only to the at least one electric heater. An aerosol-generating system includes a cartridge and an aerosol-generating device configured to receive the cartridge. The cartridge includes a cartridge housing and a cartridge aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing. The cartridge housing has a first end, a second end, a first side between the first end and the second end, and at least one aperture on the first side. The aerosol-generating device includes a device housing, a liquid aerosol-forming substrate, an electric heater, a power supply, and a controller. The device housing defines a cavity, a cavity air inlet, and a cavity air outlet. The cavity is configured to receive the cartridge such that an airflow from the cavity air inlet to the cavity outlet flows through the cartridge via the at least one aperture during an operation of the aerosol-generating system.

An aerosol generation device has a heating chamber for receiving a substrate carrier containing an aerosol substrate. The heating chamber includes an open first end, a chamber side wall, and a base at a second end of the chamber side wall opposite the open first end. The base includes a platform extending from a portion of the base towards the open first end from an interior surface of the base. The platform is formed of a series of protrusions positioned at an edge of the base.

A method of fabricating a thin film heater includes providing a heating element supported on a surface of a flexible dielectric backing film; and attaching a layer of heat shrink film onto the surface of the dielectric backing film so as to at least partially enclose the heating element between the heat shrink film and the dielectric backing film. The method provides a much more precise and consistent method of assembling the heater assembly and improves the thermal properties and heat transfer to a heating chamber.

An electrically operated aerosol-generating system may include a liquid storage portion configured to store a liquid from which aerosol may be generated, an electric heater, a capillary wick extending between the liquid storage portion and the electric heater and configured to convey liquid from the liquid storage portion to the electric heater and electric circuitry connected to the electric heater. The electric circuitry may be configured to: activate the electric heater for a first heating time period in response to an input to vaporize liquid in the capillary wick, activate the electric heater for a second heating time period upon the elapse of a first cooling time period after the first heating time period, record a temperature measurement of the electric heater during the second heating time period, and determine an amount of liquid in the liquid storage portion based on the temperature measurement.

Aerosol-generating systems with liquid level determination and methods of determining liquid level in aerosol-generating systems

An aerosol-generating system may include a cartridge, a vaporiser section configured to receive the cartridge, and a power supply section configured to supply electrical power to the vaporiser section. The cartridge may include a cartridge housing containing a solid aerosol-forming substrate and defining a cartridge air inlet that extends through a wall portion of the cartridge housing. The vaporiser section may include a vaporiser housing containing an electric heater and a liquid aerosol-forming substrate and defining a vaporiser air outlet that extends through a wall portion of the vaporiser housing. The cartridge wall portion is configured to abut the vaporiser wall portion when the cartridge is received within the vaporiser section. Aerosol-generating system having variable airflow

The method includes electrically connecting a first line and a second line to a first terminal and a second terminal, the first line and the second line being in parallel, first configuring an aerosol-generator and a first barrier element within the first line, and second configuring an identifying element and a second barrier element within the second line. The first barrier element and the second barrier element each have an asymmetric electrical conductance. The first and second configuring configures the aerosol-generating system so that a first electrical current applied through the first and second terminal in a first direction allows the first electrical current to pass through the identifying element without activating the aerosol-generator, and a second electrical current applied through the first and second terminal in a second direction allows the second electrical current to activate the aerosol-generator without the second electrical current passing through the identifying element.
