An exhaust aftertreatment system for use with over-the-road vehicle is disclosed. The exhaust aftertreatment system includes a reducing agent mixer with a mixing can and a heated doser unit configured to inject heated reducing agent into the mixing can for distribution throughout exhaust gases passed through the mixing can. Heating of reducing agent may be selectively applied based on a variety of inputs to a controller.

An injection assembly for a vehicle exhaust system includes a housing defining a fluid cavity, a doser mounted to the housing and configured to inject a fluid into the fluid cavity, and a valve to control flow of the fluid. The valve is moveable between an open position and a closed position. A resilient member is configured with a biasing force to bias the valve to the closed position. The biasing force is overcome when fluid is heated downstream of the valve and exceeds a predetermined pressure level to allow backflow into the fluid cavity.

The exhaust aftertreatment system includes a flash-boil doser mounted to an exhaust conduit and a catalyst coupled to the exhaust conduit. The flash-boil doser configured to inject heated and pressurized reducing agent into an exhaust passageway defined by the exhaust conduit for distribution throughout exhaust gases passed through the exhaust conduit. The catalyst configured to react the reducing agent with the nitrous oxide in the flow of exhaust gases to provide treated exhaust gases with a reduced nitrous oxide amount.

An exhaust component includes a housing defining an internal cavity and a burner positioned within the internal cavity. The burner provides a combustion chamber having an exhaust gas inlet, a fuel inlet, a combustion air inlet, and an outlet. At least one exhaust aftertreatment component is positioned within the internal cavity and is directly coupled to the outlet of the combustion chamber.

Thermal regenerator for exhaust system

A vehicle exhaust system includes an outer housing defining an internal cavity surrounding an axis, an inlet baffle configured to direct engine exhaust gas into the internal cavity, and an injector that is configured to spray a fluid into the internal cavity to mix with engine exhaust gas. An inner wall is spaced radially inward of an inner surface of the outer housing to define a gap. The inner wall has an impingement side facing the axis and a non-impingement side facing the gap. At least one heat transfer element is positioned within the gap and in is contact with at least one of the inner surface of the outer housing and the non-impingement side of the inner wall to transfer heat through the inner wall to the impingement side to reduce spray deposit formation.

Mixer for a vehicle exhaust system

A vehicle exhaust component assembly includes a first exhaust component, a second exhaust component downstream of the first exhaust component, and an injection system configured to inject a reducing agent into engine exhaust gases upstream of the second exhaust component. A mixer connects an outlet of the first exhaust component to an inlet to the second exhaust component. The mixer includes an outer housing that is configured to direct a mixture of the reducing agent and the engine exhaust gases into the second exhaust component. The mixer also includes at least one insulation feature that is configured to reduce heat lost at the outer housing.

A fuel-fired combustor includes a housing with a combustion chamber. The housing has an inlet and an outlet. A fuel inlet to the housing supplies fuel to the combustion chamber. An igniter ignites a mixture of exhaust gas and fuel to produce a flame for increasing an internal temperature. At least one sensor measures or monitors at least one combustor characteristic and generates a corresponding combustor characteristic signal. A controller receives the combustor characteristic signal, compares the combustor characteristic signal to a predetermined combustor criteria and generates an output signal to change at least one combustor operating condition if the combustor characteristic signal varies from the predetermined combustor criteria.

Fuel-fired combustor

A method and apparatus for identifying a component failure within a thermal regenerator operates as follows. The burner control unit monitors at least one of a fuel pump characteristic for a fuel pump and an ignition system characteristic for an ignition system. The fuel pump is used to supply fuel to a fuel-fired burner and the ignition system is used to ignite fuel supplied to the fuel-fired burner. The fuel pump characteristic is communicated to the burner control unit which compares the fuel pump characteristic to a predetermined fuel pump criteria. The ignition system characteristic is communicated to the burner control unit which compares the ignition system characteristic to a predetermined ignition system criteria. The burner control unit identifies a fuel pump failure when the fuel pump characteristic does not meet the fuel pump criteria, and identifies an ignition system failure when the ignition system characteristic does not meet the ignition system criteria.
