A tubular sheath for enclosing an expandable balloon attached to the distal portion of a catheter encloses and protects the expandable balloon. The tubular sheath is configured to be slidable and removable from the catheter. The tubular sheath may include a longitudinal splitting element that is removable as a result of a force applied to the longitudinal splitting element. The longitudinal splitting element is configured to split the wall of the tubular sheath in response to the force. Alternatively, the tubular sheath may include a gripping portion that has relatively poor cohesive strength to adjacent portions of the tubular sheath. The tubular sheath is configured to be removable in response to a force applied to the gripping portion.

Expandable balloon sheaths

A medical device includes an inflatable balloon defining an interior surface and an exterior surface, and a coating including a therapeutic agent disposed on the exterior surface of the inflatable balloon. The coating has a release transition temperature within a range from about 25&#xb0; C. to about 50&#xb0; C. When the temperature of the coating is below the release transition temperature, the coating retains at least a portion of the therapeutic agent on the exterior of the inflatable balloon. When the temperature of the coating is above the release transition temperature, the coating releases at least a portion of the therapeutic agent from the exterior of the inflatable balloon.

A system for delivering an implantable medical device to a treatment site within a patient includes an implantable medical device including a rigid body, and a delivery device. The delivery device includes an elongated catheter shaft and an expandable balloon connected to the elongated catheter shaft adjacent a distal end of the elongated catheter shaft, where the expandable balloon includes a proximal region, a distal region, and an implant retaining portion disposed between the proximal region and the distal region. The delivery device also includes a compression element connected to the implant retaining portion of the expandable balloon, where the compression element is adapted to limit expansion of the implant retaining portion of the expandable balloon when the expandable balloon is at least partially inflated. At least a portion of the compression element and the implant retaining portion are disposed within a lumen of the implantable medical device.
