A system can include an engine, an aftertreatment system with a particulate filter, and a controller. The controller is configured to compare a time value since a last delta pressure soot load estimate process to a predetermined time threshold. Responsive to the time value being greater than or equal to the predetermined time threshold, the controller decreases a flow threshold value to a lower flow threshold value. If the flow amount is greater than or equal to the lower flow threshold value, then the controller activates a delta pressure soot load estimation process. A combined soot load estimate is then calculated using a delta pressure soot load estimation of the delta pressure soot load estimate process responsive to the lower flow threshold value.

Soot load estimation during idle or low load

An engine diagnostic tool includes a diagnostic engine calibration module structured to include a plurality of diagnostic processes for operating an internal combustion engine system of an immobilized vehicle. One or more of the plurality of diagnostic processes are structured to be an intrusive diagnostic process for the internal combustion engine system, wherein the intrusive diagnostic process causes the internal combustion engine system to operate outside of one or more calibration parameters. The diagnostic engine module is further structured to control the order and timing of each diagnostic process in the plurality of diagnostic processes.

Exhaust aftertreatment system diagnostic and conditioning

The method may be implemented by the control module () in the combustion system (). The method comprises predicting an iced condition of the pressure sensor assembly (); responsive to predicting the iced condition, controlling exhaust emissions without using a pressure parameter sensed with the pressure sensor assembly () in the iced condition; predicting a de-iced condition of the pressure sensor assembly (); and responsive to predicting the de-iced condition, controlling the exhaust emissions using the pressure parameter sensed with the pressure sensor assembly () in the de-iced condition.

System and method to detect and respond to iced sensors in exhaust after-treatment system

Methods of operating internal combustion engines are provided. A controller detects a coasting event while an associated vehicle is in motion. In response to the coasting event, the controller directs at least a portion of an exhaust gas output by an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine of the vehicle into an intake system of the internal combustion engine.

A method for diagnosing NOx sensors in an exhaust aftertreatment system includes suspending reductant dosing in an exhaust aftertreatment system; purging a reductant deposit in a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system of the exhaust aftertreatment system; adjusting at least one of an ignition timing and an engine speed for an engine to adjust an engine out nitrogen oxide (NOx) amount; receiving measured SCR inlet NOx data from a SCR inlet NOx sensor and measured SCR outlet NOx data from a SCR outlet NOx sensor; determining a phase shift between the measured SCR inlet and SCR outlet NOx data; applying the determined phase shift to the SCR outlet NOx data; and determining a diagnostic feature based on the SCR inlet NOx data and the phase shifted SCR outlet NOx data regarding a state of the SCR inlet and outlet NOx sensors.

NOx sensor diagnostic for an exhaust aftertreatment system

An apparatus includes an engine output module that determines an engine output power parameter for an engine. The apparatus includes an output power threshold module that determines if the engine output power parameter is below an output power threshold. The apparatus includes a NOx module that determines a nitrogen oxide ('NOx') efficiency of a selective catalytic reduction ('SCR') system in response to the output power threshold module determining that the determined engine output power parameter is below the output power threshold. The SCR system is in exhaust receiving communication with the engine. The apparatus includes a NOthreshold module that determines if the NOefficiency is below a NOefficiency threshold, and a NOwarning module that sends a NOalarm signal in response to the NOthreshold module determining that the NOefficiency is below the NOefficiency threshold.
