An improved force-measurement system utilizes active magnetostrictive sensors for generating a signal representative of a force, such as the weight of a person or thing on a seat within a motor vehicle, or the force applied to the horn sensor switch on a vehicle steering wheel. The active magnetostrictive sensor includes an excitation coil and a detection coil.

An algorithm for evaluating information from sensors interacting with strips that are extended during activation of the airbag determines whether the airbag has contacted an out-of-position occupant. In one embodiment, each strip includes an alternating pattern that generates a frequency in a sensor through which the strip passes during deployment. The frequency generated is based upon the speed with which the strip passes by the sensor and, in turn, the speed of deployment of the airbag. A controller evaluates the frequency and the changes in frequency from the sensor during deployment. Depending upon the specific configuration of the system and the specific vehicle, a decrease in the speed of deployment of the airbag may be indicated by a decrease in the frequency of the signal. A decrease in speed of deployment may indicate that the airbag is in contact with an occupant

Variable time venting algorithm

A vehicle occupant safety system includes a crash severity determination system and one or more vehicle occupant safety devices. The crash severity determination system includes at least one crash sensor which generates a crash signal based upon the severity of the crash. A continuously variable crash severity output signal is generated based upon the crash signal from the crash sensor. Generally, for a given crash type, the crash severity signal is inversely proportional to the amount of time between the beginning of the crash and when the crash signal crosses a threshold. This continuously variable crash severity signal is sent to the vehicle occupant safety devices, which activate proportionally to the crash severity signal.

Vehicle occupant safety system

An algorithm for evaluating information from sensors interacting with strips that are extended during activation of the airbag determines whether the airbag has contacted an out-of-position occupant. In one embodiment, each strip includes an alternating pattern that generates a frequency in a sensor through which the strip passes during deployment. The frequency generated is based upon the speed with which the strip passes by the sensor and, in turn, the speed of deployment of the airbag. A controller evaluates the frequency and the changes in frequency from the sensor during deployment. Depending upon the specific configuration of the system and the specific vehicle, a decrease in the speed of deployment of the airbag may be indicated by a decrease in the frequency of the signal. A decrease in speed of deployment may indicate that the airbag is in contact with an occupant.

A crash detection system comprises two sensors with complementary performance characteristics, a controller evaluates the signals from both sensors to determine whether an airbag should be activated, when an airbag should be activated and whether multiple stages of the airbag should be activated. The first sensor preferably comprises a ball-in-tube sensor and the second sensor preferably comprises an electronic sensing module comprising an accelerometer and a CPU. The CPU receives signals from the accelerometer and the ball-in-tube sensor. The controller activates the airbag only if both sensors generate fire signals. The controller generates an airbag activation signal based upon crash type and the sum of the times required from the beginning of the crash for both sensors to generate fire signals.

Crash detection system

Motor vehicle safety system deployment is controlled by a biomechanical algorithm that considers a normalized frontal crash velocity and vehicle occupant status in determining safety system deployment strategy. Normalized frontal velocity is determined either by a radar type crash velocity detection system or by adjusting the radar velocity towards a crash velocity determined based on time-to-fire as determined by a single-point algorithm. The radar velocity or the adjusted greater velocity is normalized if necessary for crash type to a frontal velocity equivalent.

A vehicle safety system having crash detection circuitry and an airbag adjacent a vehicle seat further includes a system for determining the weight of a passenger on the vehicle seat. If the detected weight of the passenger does not exceed a predetermined weight threshold, the airbag is disabled. A forward sensor and a rear sensor are mounted in a vehicle seat adjacent a ferromagnetic structure element in the seat. The sensors measure strain on the ferromagnetic element, which is proportional to weight on the vehicle seat. A comparison of the measurements of the two sensors also provides an indication of the position of the passenger on the vehicle seat, such that the airbag may be disabled if the passenger is sitting too close to the airbag. Each of the sensors preferably comprises an electromagnet generating an oscillating magnetic field of a known frequency and a coil. Strain on the ferromagnetic element alters the magnetic field and such strain is detected by the coil. The detected change in the magnetic field is proportional to the weight of the passenger.

A method and system for detecting a vehicle roll-over utilizes a z-axis accelerometer (12) and a processor (20) for analyzing the accelerometer output (18) to provide early detection/prediction of a vehicle roll-over. The output signal (18) is substantially a positive constant value equal to the force of gravity when the vehicle (16) is in a normal upright condition, and as the vehicle (16) experiences a roll-over, the output signal transitions to a substantially negative constant value when the vehicle has rolled 180.degree. upside down. To provide early roll-over detection and/or prediction, the z-axis data is averaged (102) and compared to a first threshold value (104) set to a g-force value within a range of 0 to -1 g. Estimating a slope value (step 110), i.e. the change in z-axis data over time, can provide an additional discrimination measure to improve overall reliability, and to provide a qualitative measure of the roll over.

In a system and method for controlling actuation of a vehicle passenger safety device, wherein a first time-varying measure m.sub.1 (t), itself a function of received vehicle acceleration information, is accumulated to obtain a second time-varying measure m.sub.2 (t) for subsequent comparison with a threshold value therefor, the first measure m.sub.1 (t) is 'damped' prior to accumulation by subtracting therefrom a correction value or 'damping factor f.sub.d.' The damping factor f.sub.d may be either a constant or a time-varying function f.sub.d (t) of one or more other time-varying measures, themselves based on received vehicle acceleration information.

A system and method for controlling actuation of a vehicle safety device in response to an impact to a first portion of the vehicle includes a ferromagnetic element mechanically coupled with the first portion of the vehicle so as to receive elastic strain waves generated as a result of plastic deformation of the first portion of the vehicle. A permanent magnet is mounted on the vehicle adjacent to the ferromagnetic element so that the ferromagnetic element itself influences the magnetic field. An induction coil is also mounted on the vehicle so as to fall within the magnetic field generated by the magnet. Upon plastic deformation of the first portion of the vehicle, the ensuing elastic strain waves elastically deform the ferromagnetic element to vary its ferromagnetic properties and, in turn, alter the magnetic field so as to induce an electromotive force voltage in the induction coil. A signal processor receives the electromotive force voltage induced in the induction coil by the varying magnetic field. The signal processor actuates the safety device when the electromotive force voltage, or an appropriate measure derived from the electromotive force voltage, exceeds a predetermined threshold.

System and method for controlling vehicle safety device

A system (10) and method for detecting an envelope of received vehicle acceleration information (a(t)) useful in controlling actuation of a vehicle passenger safety device, wherein consecutive values for received vehicle acceleration information (a(t)) are stored and rank-ordered in a pair of rank-order filters (14, 16) to provide a highest-ranked value (a.sub.H) from among the most-recent half of the stored values, and a highest-ranked value (a.sub.H ') from among the least-recent half of the stored values. The absolute value of the highest-ranked least-current value is taken and subtracted from the highest-ranked most-recent value to obtain a modified jerk measure (j.sub.H *). The absolute value of the thus-generated modified jerk value is taken to obtain a measure (m.sub.1) which tracks the envelope of the received acceleration information and, hence, is useful as an envelope detector when evaluating a crash waveform for purposes of controlling actuation of the safety device.

A matched filter (14) for vehicle crash discrimination system (10) utilizes at least one set of n scaling factors stored in a memory (24) to combine (22) with a set of n time sequenced acceleration data samples. The values of the n scaling factors are selected to effect a desired vehicle crash discrimination strategy. The matched filter optimizes system design flexibility and reconfigurability by allowing different strategies to be implemented simply by selecting the appropriate scaling factors stored in the memory.

A system and method for controlling actuation of a vehicle passenger safety device in response to an event possibly requiring actuation of the safety device, wherein a first measure calculated from received vehicle acceleration information is weighted by a second measure, such as a modified vehicle velocity measure, which is itself evaluative of the relative progress of the event. The weighted first measure is thereafter accumulated and compared to a threshold value, with the safety device being actuated when the resulting accumulated weighted first measure exceeds the threshold value.
