A thermoplastic composition includes: 40 to 75 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane-arylate); 5 to 45 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane) present in an amount effective to provide 0.75 to 7 wt % of siloxane units; 10 to 40 wt % of a polycarbonate homopolymer; 5 to 15 wt % of an organophosphorus compound in an amount effective to provide 0.1 to 1 wt % of phosphorus; and optionally, 0.1 to 10 wt % of an additive composition. The thermoplastic composition has a melt volume flow rate of greater than 6 cm/10 min. An article molded from the thermoplastic composition has a 2-minute integrated heat release rate of less than or equal to 65 kW-min/mand a peak heat release rate of less than 65 kW/mand a notched Izod impact resistance of greater than 30 kJ/mor greater than 700 J/m.

Thermoplastic compositions, methods of their manufacture, and articles thereof

A reinforced polycarbonate composition includes 30-60 wt % of a homopolycarbonate; 5-30 wt % of a poly(carbonate-siloxane); 10-40 wt % of a high heat polycarbonate having a glass transition temperature of 170° C. or higher determined per ASTM D3418 with a 20° C./min heating rate; 1-10 wt % of a phosphorous-containing flame retardant present in amount effective to provide 0.1-1.5 wt % phosphorous; 0.01-0.5 wt % of an anti-drip agent; 5-30 wt % of a reinforcing fiber; and optionally, up to 10 wt % of an additive composition, wherein each amount is based on the total weight of the reinforced polycarbonate composition, which sums to 100 wt %. A molded sample of the polycarbonate composition has a heat deflection temperature greater than 115° C., preferably greater than 125° C., more preferably greater than 130° C., or a flame test rating of V1, preferably V0 as measured according to UL-94 at a thickness of 0.8 millimeter, or at a thickness of 0.6 mm, or at a thickness of 0.4 mm.

Reinforced polycarbonate compositions with improved heat resistance

A poly(carbonate-ester) copolymer including carbonate units of the formula (I); and ester units of the formula (II) wherein: T is a Calkylene, a Ccycloalkylene, or a Carylene; and Rand J are each independently a bisphenol A divalent group, or a phthalimidine divalent group or a third divalent group of the formula (III), (IV), (V), (VI) or (VII) wherein Xis a Cpolycyclic aryl, Cmono- or polycycloalkylene, Cmono- or polycycloalkylidene, -(Q)x-G-(Q)- group wherein Qand Qare each independently a Calkylene, G is a Ccycloalkylene, x is 0 or 1, and y is 1, provided that the at least one bisphenol A divalent group, at least one phthalimidine divalent group, and at least one third divalent group are present in the poly(carbonate-ester) copolymer. 

Poly(ester-carbonate)s, articles formed therefrom, and methods of manufacture

A melt-blend composition is formed from, based on the total weight of the melt-blend composition, 0 to 5 wt. % of an additive; and 95 to 100 wt. % of a polymer composition, wherein the polymer composition comprises, based on the total weight of the polymer composition, 5 to 95 wt. % of a first copolycarbonate consisting of bisphenol A carbonate units and first additional carbonate units of the formula (II), (II), (III), (IV) or (V); 95 to 5 wt. % of a second copolycarbonate consisting of bisphenol A carbonate units and second additional carbonate units (phthalimidine carbonate units); and 0.001 to 0.1 wt. % of a transesterification catalyst, wherein the melt-blended composition has a haze of less than 15% and a transmission greater than 75%, each measured using the color space CIE1931 (Illuminant C and a 2&#xb0; observer) at a 3.2 mm thickness. 

Compatibilized compositions, articles formed therefrom, and methods of manufacture

An article for laser marking can comprising: a thermoplastic composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer, an active component comprising at least one of a polymeric unit and an additive, wherein the thermoplastic polymer has a visible transmission of greater than or equal to 80% according to ASTM D1003-00, Procedure A, using D65 illumination, 10 degrees observer, and thickness of 1 mm; and a mark produced by chemical rearrangement of the active component generated by a laser of a first wavelength; wherein the mark exhibits at least one of: (i) a change in optical properties in the region 400 nm to 700 nm when exposed to light having a wavelength less than or equal to 500 nm; and (ii) a change in optical properties in the region of 400 nm to 700 nm when exposed to light having a wavelength greater than or equal to the first wavelength.

Marked thermoplastic compositions, methods of making and articles comprising the same, and uses thereof

A poly(ester-carbonate) copolymer comprises carbonate units of the formula (I); and ester units of the formula (II) wherein: T is a Calkylene, a Ccycloalkylene, or a Carylene; and R1 and J are each independently a bisphenol A divalent group and a phthalimidine divalent group, provided that the phthalimidine divalent group is present in an amount of 40 to 50 mol % based on the total moles of the bisphenol A divalent groups and the Cdivalent group, and the ester units are present in an amount of 40 to 60 mol % based on the sum of the moles of the carbonate units and the ester units; and wherein the poly(ester-carbonate) copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of 18,000 to 24,000 Daltons; and the composition has a Tg of 210 to 235&#xb0; C. and a melt viscosity of less than 1050 Pa-s at 644 secand 350&#xb0; C. 

Poly(ester-carbonate) copolymers, articles formed therefrom, and methods of manufacture

A laser weldable composition comprising a polyester component, 5 to 50 weight percent of a filler; and 10 to 30 wt. % of a poly(ester-carbonate) copolymer comprising carbonate units and ester units of the formula (I) wherein: T is a Calkylene, a Ccycloalkylene, or a Carylene; Rand J are each independently (a) a bisphenol A divalent group, and (b) a Cor higher divalent group (b1), (b2), or (b1) and (b2), wherein (b1) is a phthalimidine divalent group, and (b2) is a third divalent group, wherein the Cor higher divalent group (b1), (b2) or a combination of (b1) and (b2) is present in an amount of 40 mol % to 50 mol % based on the total moles of the bisphenol A divalent groups and the Cor higher divalent group; and the composition, when molded into an article having a 2.0 mm thickness, provides a near infrared transmission at 960 nanometers of greater than 50% and a thermal resistance according to HDT 1.8 MPa flat (ISO 75/Af) is greater than 160&#xb0; C. 

Laser weldable compositions, articles formed therefrom, and methods of manufacture

Polycarbonate blend compositions are disclosed. The compositions include at least one polycarbonate useful for high heat applications. The compositions can include one or more additional polymers. The compositions can include one or more additives. The compositions can be used to prepare articles of manufacture, and in particular, automotive bezels.

High heat polycarbonate compositions

A poly(ester-carbonate) copolymer comprises carbonate units of the formula (I); and ester units of the formula (II) wherein: T is a Calkylene, a Ccycloalkylene, or a Carylene; and Rand J are each independently (a) a bisphenol A divalent group and (b) a Cor higher divalent group (b), wherein the Cor higher divalent group is present in an amount of 40 to 50 mol %; the ester units are present in an amount of 40 to 60 mol %; the poly(ester-carbonate) copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of 18,000 to 24,000 Daltons; and a sample of the composition has a glass transition temperature of 210&#xb0; C. to 235&#xb0; C. as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as per ASTM D3418 with a 20&#xb0; C./min heating rate; and a melt viscosity of less than 1050 Pa-s at 644 sec-1 and 350&#xb0; C., determined according to ISO 11443. 

A composition includes specific amounts of an amorphous polycarbonate, a partially crystalline polyester, and an ultraviolet absorbing agent comprising a hydroxyaryl group and a hydrogen-bond accepting group. The ultraviolet absorbing agent has a lambda-max less than 400 nanometers. The composition excludes white pigments, and colorants having a lambda-max of 400 to 700 nanometers. The composition is useful for forming a near infrared laser-transmissive part in a laser welded article that further includes a near infrared laser-absorbing part.

Thermoplastic composition and laser-welded article

Disclosed herein are methods and compositions of blended polycarbonate compositions with simultaneously decreased splay and improved impact characteristics. The resulting compositions, comprising one or more polycarbonate polymers, a splay reducer, and a filler, can be used in the manufacture of articles while still retaining the advantageous physical properties of blended polycarbonate compositions with decreased splay. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present invention.

Polycarbonate compositions for reduced splay in combination with sustained or improved impact resistance

The disclosure relates, in one aspect, to porous solid-state films with controlled pore structures obtained by laser perforation. A thin laser-perforated film can comprise a slab defining a plurality of pores distributed in a predetermined arrangement, the plurality of pores having a distribution of sizes bound by a predetermined magnitude. In an aspect, the plurality of pores are formed in the slab with a laser having a wavelength less than about 400 nm and the slab has a transmission of the laser light of equal to or less than about 70% measured at a thickness of the slab of 100 micrometer or less.

Laser-perforated porous solid-state films and applications thereof

In an embodiment, a method of inscribing a substrate comprises contacting the substrate with a laser beam to generate a mark, wherein the mark results from increasing the reflectivity of the thermoplastic material, wherein the substrate comprises a composition comprising a non-reflective thermoplastic material. In an embodiment, a method for generating a mark on an article comprises bonding a first component to a second component with a laser beam having a wavelength of greater than or equal to 800 nanometers, wherein the first component composition comprises a thermoplastic composition absorbing light having a wavelength of less than or equal to 500 nanometers and wherein the second component comprises a thermoplastic composition absorbing light having a wavelength of greater than or equal to 800 nanometers.
