A method for preparing a composite projectile body with preformed fragments precisely embedded within the walls of the projectile body. The process utilizes a combination of additive manufacturing and advanced powder metallurgy fabrication techniques. Specifically a skeletal structure or prefabricated cage body is filled with preformed fragments. The cage structure may be situated on a mandrel or tool inside a container. The container is filled with metal powder, degassed under vacuum, and sealed. The canister is then subjected to heat and pressure to consolidate the powder to full density. The canister is then removed and the compacted billet product is further machined to obtain a desired projectile body.

Method of manufacturing composite projectile body embedded with preformed fragments

A device is provided for the controlled and precise delivery of powders, including cohesive powders, based on a fluidization technique to directly reduce inter-particle friction and using a fluidizing gas as an air-bearing. The device preferably includes no moving parts, no sealing gaskets or sealing surfaces. Unlike mechanically actuated valves, the powders dispensed by the current device do not experience mechanical shearing, thereby reducing wear and thus increasing the service life of the apparatus.

Formulations of reactive materials, such as aluminum, magnesium and alloys thereof, with combustible additives such as wood derivatives or charcoal, provide a composition for neutralizing energetic materials via combustion. Specifically, explosive substances such as ammonium nitrate and urea nitrate, which are commonly used as homemade explosives, are rapidly incinerated in a non-propagating manner by the contact with burning reactive material formulations.

Process for making a fragmentation warhead using hot isostatic pressing where tungsten spheres, powdered steel, and interlock features on a mandrel are consolidated in a matrix. Then in the finished part, the front fragmentation cap, rear and interior geometries are machined, resulting in a finished warhead with an enhanced performance fragmentation cap integrally bonded to it.

The invention includes a method for producing high-density composites of metallic glass alloy powders in combination with a refractory metal powder, and includes related methods for producing metallic glass alloys. The invention, in one aspect, employs a system of monitoring the temperature and hot isostatic pressing conditions during the consolidation of metallic compositions in order to produce higher densities and materials of a larger diameter, for example. In another aspect, the invention involves method whereby a third interfacial phase at a metallic glass alloy/refractory metal interface is effectively controlled to produce composites with advantageous properties.

The present invention generally relates to a fluidizer including at least one wall forming a conduit for a gas. The at least one wall may include a material having microscopic holes therein with a sufficient porosity to permit the escape of the gas through the microscopic holes to gas a substance. The present invention may also relate to a fluidizer including a non-cylindrical shape for fluidizing a particulate substance. The fluidizer can include a body at least partially positioned within a flow of the particulate substance wherein at least some of the particulate substance flows around the body.

A fluidizing method transports particulates by gravity flow but passes the particulates through a fluidizer which is partitioned by a porous distributor plate to form first and second chambers and wherein the particulate materials pass through said first chamber which is in gaseous communication with said second chamber via the porous distributor plate. Gas is delivered to the second chamber at a pressure sufficient to generate a gas bearing between the porous distributor plate and the particulate material. The gas is permitted to migrate through the particulate material, but it is then vented to the surrounding atomosphere without causing substantial turbulence in the particulate material and to reduce tendencies for dusting and separation of the particulates into sizes.

Fluidizing method and apparatus

A gas-assisted flow and filling device for transporting particulate material and filling die cavities includes a source of low-pressure gas for delivering gas to a chamber that is separated from a fluidizing chamber by a porous distributor plate which permits the gas to flow through the particulate material and out a vent screen so that the particulate material is permitted to flow out of the fluidizing chamber essentially free of gas and wherein the pressure of the gas delivered to the fluidizing chamber is sufficient to provide a gas bearing to said particulate material adjacent the distributor plate, but not high enough to cause turbulence in said fluidizing chamber.

Gas assisted flow tube and filling device

A delivery and filling system for filling a cavity with a particulate material is disclosed. The system in one embodiment includes a hopper; a transport device, and a delivery chute. The hopper, transport device, and delivery chute each may have a porous distributor plate which partitions them into a first chamber and a second chamber. The system is hooked to a compressed gas source connected to the porous distributor plate and a fluidizer. A gas-control unit is provided including a pressure regulator, pressure sensor, and flow metering solenoid valve to independently regulate the flow of gas to the porous distributor plate and the fluidizer of the system independently.
