An engraving method and apparatus for engraving a cylinder for printing an intaglio pattern and/or non-intaglio pattern on a web of material. The engraver includes a driver for rotatably driving the cylinder and a computer for controlling the operation of the engraver and for generating an intaglio engraving signal corresponding to an intaglio pattern and a non-intaglio signal for a gravure pattern. The engraver also uses an engraving head for engraving the cylinder with the intaglio pattern and the gravure pattern during the rotation of the cylinder in response to the intaglio engraving signal and non-intaglio signal. The invention includes an intaglio engraved pattern and method for engraving engraved areas having bottoms which are generally planar.

Engraving system and method for engraving intaglio and non-intaglio patterns

This invention relates to a system and method for intelligently placing in a periodic and/or random manner a plurality of whetting areas which facilitate lubricating and/or cooling a doctor blade in a printing press when the cylinder is placed therein. The system and method includes one or more routines which analyzes engraving/etching data and any associated white-span length. One or more whetting areas are placed in a periodic or random pattern in response thereto. The whetting areas facilitate lubricating and/or cooling the doctor blade so that it does not heat beyond a predetermined level, thereby avoiding scoring of the cylinder and problems associated with deterioration of print quality or length of cylinder life resulting from thermo-dynamic expansion and/or undesired evaporation of ink associated with areas which make up the image.

System and method for improving printing of a leading edge of an image in a gravure printing process

This invention relates to an engraving method and apparatus for engraving a cylinder for printing an intaglio pattern on a web of material. The engraver comprises a driver for rotatably driving the cylinder and a controller for controlling the operation of the engraver and for generating an intaglio engraving signal corresponding to the predetermined intaglio pattern. The engraver also comprises an engraving head comprising a stylus having a generally flat cutting edge or surface. The engraving head also is capable of engraving at response times of less than 200-300 microseconds, thereby enabling the engraving head to engrave the intaglio pattern on the cylinder during the rotation of the cylinder in response to the intaglio engraving signal. The apparatus and method also comprise a fine line boost routine for facilitating engraving fine areas or lines of the intaglio pattern. There is also provided apparatus and method for controlling ink flow in large engraved areas or intaglio trenches. The apparatus and method facilitate engraving intaglio grooves or trenches which may be generally rectangular in cross section, and which were engraved in response to a pulse-width modulated intaglio engraving signal generated by the controller. In another embodiment of the invention, a system and method or process for engraving a mixed pattern of non-intaglio and intaglio engraved areas is shown. The invention also includes a system and method for engraving mixed patterns of intaglio and non-intaglio areas. In this regard, a controller associated with the engraver analyzes the image data and differentiates the non-intaglio data from intaglio data so that it can be signed an appropriate feed rate for the intaglio and non-intaglio patterns. Using the feed rates, the mixed patterns are engraved.

Method and apparatus for engraving a mixed pattern

The invention is characterized in that it comprises a toolpath generating routine and system for generating a plurality of control points directly from image data representing an image to be engraved. The control points are used to generate a toolpath which, in turn, will be used to energize an engraving head such that a tool or stylus will engrave a pattern of engraved areas in response to the toolpath. An engraving system and method for engraving at least one engraved area is shown having an engraving head tuner for tuning an engraving head such that the frequency characteristic of the engraving head defines a substantially constant gain for frequencies less than a predetermined frequency. The invention is further characterized in that it incudes a system and method for interactively or automatically tuning the engraving head, interactively adjusting the filter characteristics (including the filter coefficients for the filters used on the engraving head) and for being responsive to the type of image data (whether continuous tone data or linework data). The invention is characterized in that it synthesizes the screening function so as to more accurately reproduce the image to be engraved by engraving multiple frequency cells where single cells would be engraved in the past.

Engraving system and method with arbitrary toolpath control

An engraving system and method for engraving a pattern, such as an intermeshing pattern, using a plurality of engraving devices is disclosed. The engraving system and method sequences and engraves the plurality of engraving devices such that when the areas engraved by those devices meet, they provide a continuous engraved pattern. The system and method also includes an imaging system and method for imaging the engraved areas associated with the engraving heads so that the heads or signals driving the heads may be adjusted to further facilitate providing engraved areas which appear as if they had been engraved by a single engraving head when, for example, an engraved area of one head meets an engraved area of other head. Also disclosed is a method and system for sequencing and transmitting image data associated with an image to be engraved in order to accommodate any cylindrical offset or an angular displacement between, for example, two engraving heads that are positioned in a generally opposed relationship.

Method and apparatus for engraving patterns with and without image

An engraving method and apparatus for engraving a cylinder for printing an intaglio pattern and/or non-intaglio pattern on a web of material. The engraver includes a driver for rotatably driving the cylinder and a computer for controlling the operation of the engraver and for generating an intaglio engraving signal corresponding to an intaglio pattern and a non-intaglio signal for a gravure pattern. Engraving system and method for engraving intaglio and non-intaglio

This invention provides an engraving method and apparatus for engraving a plurality of cells which define a pattern defining at least one edge on a surface of a cylinder. The method and apparatus generate an edge signal corresponding to at least edge cell situated in a pattern defining at least one edge on the surface. The system and method may utilize a tabulator for tabulating a table of data corresponding to an image and a locator for locating the edge using the data. The system and method provide a signal generator which can cause the engraving location of an engraved area to be shifted to facilitate defining the at least one edge. Moreover, the signal generator may also cause the area to be reduced in order to change a predetermined characteristic of the area in order to better define the at least one edge. Thus, the invention facilitates adjusting a characteristic of at least one of the engraved areas in order to change a spacial relationship between the engraved area and another engraved are to provide, for example, a non-regular or non-periodic spacing of engraved areas. The invention provides a shaping data generator for generating shaping data to be used to modify the image data corresponding to an area to be engraved to redefine at least a portion of the data to provide an engraved area having a desired shape.

Engraving method and apparatus for engraving areas using a shaping signal

This system and method relates to an engraving system and method for engraving a pattern using a plurality of engraving devices. The engraving system discloses apparatus and method for sequencing and engraving of the plurality of engraving devices such that when the areas engraved by those heads meet to provide a continuous engraved pattern. The system and method utilizes an imaging system for imaging the engraved areas associated with each engraving head so that the heads or signals driving the heads may be adjusted to further facilitate providing engraved areas which appear as if they had been engraved by a single engraving head when, for example, the engraved area of one head meets the engraved area of another head. Also, disclosed is a method for sequencing and transmitting image data associated with an image to be engraved in order to accommodate any cylindrical offset or the angular displacement between, for example, two engraving heads that are positioned in a generally opposed relationship.

Method and apparatus for engraving using multiple engraving heads

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for linearizing engraving cells to be engraved in order to adjust for visual discontinuities. An engraver for engraving a cylinder comprises a controller having data stored therein. The data generally corresponds to at least one line of cells to be engraved on the cylinder. The engraver also comprises an engraving head coupled to the controller and operatively mounted in the engraver. The engraver further comprises means located in the controller for using filter criteria to selectively filter and linearize the data so that the controller can subsequently energize the engraving head to engrave the at least one line of cells so that it appears continuous. A method for engraving the cells comprises the steps of examining present pixel data associated with a line of cells to be engraved; determining whether the present pixel data should be linearized; and selectively linearizing the present pixel data if it is determined that the present pixel data should be linearized.
