The method includes selecting a power profile command based upon a desired power consumption and performance characteristic, translating the power profile command into at least one subcommand, and initiating at least one power reduction technique in a telecom component based upon the at least one subcommand.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a telecommunications system. The telecommunications system may include at least one actively operating component and at least one redundant component. The redundant component may include a first subcircuitry for receiving synchronization information and at least one second subcircuitry. Isolation components such as p-n junction or Schottky diodes are provided at pull-up resistors of each signal line of a Gunning Transceiver Logic (GTL) backplane bus in an electronic system for improved reliability, specifically to prevent momentary termination of the bus to ground when a circuit card incorporating the pull-up resistors is inserted into the system.

An apparatus comprises a controller for controlling operation of the apparatus and a switch for switchably coupling electrical power to the controller to enable the controller and apparatus to operate. The controller includes a module for controlling the switch to decouple electrical power from the apparatus, including the controller, and the apparatus further comprises a switch controller for controlling the switch to restore electrical power to the apparatus and controller a predetermined period of time after the switch decouples electrical power therefrom. The apparatus may be embodied in a line card of a communication system and the controller may comprise a control processor for controlling local operations of the line card.
