A waterborne coating composition which includes a film-forming binder and composite particles comprising wax and a metal oxide, such as wax encapsulated zinc oxide, provides enhanced mildew resistance.

Composite particles for water-based coating compositions

Colorant compositions which are suitable for tinting base paint or stains in color tinting equipment and which provide improved resistance to microbial contamination by inclusion of a combination of antimicrobial agents. Also disclosed is a method for assessing the resistance of colorant compositions to microbial growth.

Antimicrobial compositions and coating compositions including antimicrobial compositions including copper glass nanoparticles and an additive alkyldiol compound. Coating compositions including the antimicrobial composition exhibit enhanced antimicrobial efficacy and improved coatings performance characteristics including ability to appropriately shade for a base, starting masstone color, as compared to coatings compositions containing copper glass nanoparticles and no such alkyldiol additives.

A coating composition may include a polymeric binder and bacteria that exhibit biologically induced mineralization (BIM) or biologically controlled mineralization (BCM) of calcium carbonate (CaCO) in the presence of environmental calcium. The bacteria may exhibit BIM or BCM of CaCOusing the ChaA antiporter protein. The coating formulations may be used to form coatings that exhibit self-healing properties in response to damage, such as a cut, tear, puncture, abrasion, or the like. For example, in response to being exposed to the damage, the bacteria may utilize nutrients, a calcium source, and water to cause precipitation of CaCOat the site of the damage. The nutrients, the calcium source, and the water may be provided as part of the coating formulation, as part of another layer of a coating system, from an external source (e.g., an applied spray or wash), or combinations thereof.

Self-repairing polymeric coatings

A high quality paint comprises water, latex polymer, pigment, and biocidal agent. The coating provided by the high quality paint may be capable of killing gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria at a rate of greater than 3 logs within 2 hours of application of bacteria to a painted surface. The coating provided by the high quality of paint may be capable of continuing to kill gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria at a rate of greater than 1 log within 2 hours even after repeated contamination of the surface. The coating provided by the high quality paint may be capable of delivering residual killing of gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria for up to 48 months. The coating provided by the high quality paint may also be capable of inactivating viruses.
