An internal combustion engine includes a crankcase in which a crankshaft is rotatably mounted in bearings including bearing covers, to which at least one connecting rod carrying a piston is linked. The piston is movable in a cylinder covered by a cylinder head forming a combustion chamber and gas exchange valves are arranged in the cylinder head, which are actuated by at least one camshaft, which is connected to a gear train gear wheel situated on the crankshaft via a differential gear. A mass differential gear including two balance shafts is present. The mass differential gear is situated in a gear frame and attached to the crankcase below the crankshaft and driven by a mass shaft drive gear situated on the crankshaft, which is arranged axially essentially next to the gear train gear wheel/idler gear. The gear train gear wheel/idler gear is arranged on the main bearing cover.

An internal combustion engine having a crankcase and a cylinder head is provided. The internal combustion engine includes at least one cylinder block, at least one cooler, at least one smooth flange surface for accommodating the at least one cooler, at least one coolant inlet to the cooler, at least one coolant outlet from the cooler, at least one exhaust gas inlet to the cooler, at least one integrated exhaust gas feed-through from the cooler and at least one internal cooling section.

A fuel injection pump element 15 is mounted in an engine crankcase (1) adjacent its associated cylinder 9, and in substantially parallel orientation thereto so that the high pressure outlet 20 of the injection pump element 15 is close to the injection valve 13 thus permitting a very short injection line 21. Mounting the fuel injection pump element 15 within the crankcase provides a very rigid mechanical support therefor. Use of a very short fuel injection line provides superior hydraulic rigidity as is required for achieving high injection pressures. A special bushing 31 with fuel passage may be used to mount the pump plunger bushing 19. The special bushing 31 may be made of high quality material of low porosity to add strength and avoid fuel leakage that may otherwise occur because of the porosity of the case iron crankcase.
