A cathode active material includes a composition expressed as:Li(NiMnCo)(NiMnCo)O; orNa(NiMnCo)(NiMnCo)O;where: M1 represents a core composition comprising of Ni, Mn, and/or Co or a combination of at two of thereof; M2 represents a surface composition having at least 50% Co, and, optionally Ni and/or Mn; the structure of M2 may be a composite structure and includes a rock-salt or disordered rock-salt phase; 0.5≤α<1, 0≤x≤1, 0≤y≤0.5, 0≤z≤1, 0≤x'≤0.5, 0≤y′≤0.5, 0.5≤z′≤1, and −0.1≤β≤0.1; the sum of x, y and z is 0.9-1.1, and the sum of x′, y′ and z′ is 0.9-1.1.

A cathode material comprising: a cathode active material of formula LiNiMnCoOor NaNiMnCoOand having a partial or whole particle concentration gradient, wherein at least two or three elements concentration gradually change in the part or whole particle from the center part to the surface part of the particle (i.e. along a vector radius); 0.5<x≤1, 0≤y≤0.33, 0≤z≤0.33.

A cathode active material of formula LiNiMnAlMOBor NaNiMnAlM'OB, wherein M is a combination of Ti, and Mg; M&#x2032; is Ti, Mg, or a combination of thereof; B is selected from the group of F, S, Se, or Cl; 0.8&#x3c;x&#x3c;1, 0&#x3c;y&#x3c;0.2, 0&#x3c;z&#x2264;0.2, 0&#x2264;&#x3b1;&#x2264;0.2, 0&#x2264;&#x3b5;&#x2264;0.1, 0.5&#x3c;x&#x2032;&#x3c;1, 0&#x3c;y&#x2032;&#x3c;0.5, 0&#x3c;z&#x2032;&#x2264;0.2, 0&#x2264;&#x3b1;&#x2032;&#x2264;0.2, and 0&#x2264;&#x3b5;&#x2032;&#x2264;0.1. The particle is a single crystal, a single particle, or a secondary particle comprising a plurality of primary particles; and the particle is a uniform composition or a concentration gradient composition.
