A method in which a media server detects a media stream from a gateway which is only capable of sending a stream from a half duplex source. Call setup, such as a floor request from the gateway or the half duplex source, is not required. The media server then blocks media streams from full duplex sources to create half duplex communication, without using a buffer. Once the stream from the gateway has ended, the server detects streams from other sources and restores full duplex communication. A communication server carries out the method and is capable of detecting whether or not the server is connected to a half duplex source, such as a Land Mobile Radio (LMR) gateway, and then altering behavior according to that source. In doing so, the server enables either half duplex or full duplex operation, depending upon whether the source data originates from the half duplex source.

A smart mic may be combined with an LMR radio terminal for user communication. An outgoing user communication by either the LMR terminal or the smart mic causes a corresponding incoming communication received respectively at the smart mic or the LMR terminal to be suppressed in various ways. This prevents audio interference for the user.

Management of a combined smart-mic and radio system

A smart speaker/microphone is described that optionally connects to an attached device that may be an LMR radio. The smart speaker/microphone can operate independently to an attached device. Preferentially the smart speaker/microphone contains apparatus to enable the switching of key functions to an attached device based on either automatic or manual change in a switching condition.

A combined cellular smart-mic and LMR radio terminal is operated to give preference to one wireless bearer over the other. A voice call is often received both on the cellular bearer and the LMR bearer. It is then determined if the cellular or LMR bearer is preferred for calls. The call continues on the preferred bearer only while the same call on the non-preferred bearer is discontinued. The non-preferred call can be muted, disabled or ended for example. The preferred bearer may be determined by signal quality, user location, network priority or user settings, for example.
